Kill Motierre: yes or no?

Post » Sun May 27, 2012 5:39 pm

I can't decide whether to kill Motierre or not, for roleplaying reasons, not because he has gems on him. Motierre is the one that started the contract of the emperor.

Don't kill reasons:
- he hired the Dark Brotherhood, so to protect the DB's reputation they shouldn't kill him.
- he didn't violate the contract and paid up and vowed not to cross the DB.

Kill reasons:
- an emperor's dying wish. he didn't seem like a bad guy and he was polite.
- he seems like one of those spineless elitist politicians.
- maybe he just wants more power for himself and doesn't have any noble goals, but can't be sure.

How exactly does he stand to gain from this anyway? I wish I had more information to go on to judge whether I should kill him or not. He said I did the Empire a lot of good. How exactly?

Anyone else has any different good reasons to kill him or to let him live?

On a sidenote, I really wish I could've had a conversation with the emperor beyond a few words.

You don't know the full extent of why he did it. Maybe he had some noble goals. Though if he did, he probably would have talked about them?

Besides, isn't that a kind of behavior that the DB would want to encourage? Paying them for the assassination of political rivals. Killing contractors doesn't seem like a great way to do that.

I killed him, the emperor was pretty gracious in accepting his fate the least I could do was grant him his last request. As for protecting the dark brotherhood's reputation, no one really knows Mortierre was the one that hired the DB in the first place, killing him will only make it look like the DB has even more reach taking out the emperor and a member of the elder council... Not to mention there's no rule I'm aware of that says the DB can't murder the people who invoked a contract if they feel like it, more souls for Sithis.

Since I don't think people would know he hired the DB, the reputation factor isn't a big deal.

If you are Stormcloak, killing him has a higher chance of weakening the Empire than leaving him alive. Presumably he had some mechanisms in place to seize power, but with him dead it will be pure chaos.

I killed him, I don't like people like him and the emperor was a good man. After doing the dark brotherhood quest line, IMO it wasn't worth it, so I went back to my old save :D

I hated the fact, that you don't get any info about the political intrigue there, he just said "Oh I forgot, you don't care for politics" or something like that, but sadly I DO CARE! It's the same problem nearly all quests in Skyrim suffer, the lack of background information and freedom of choice. I'm not a mindless killer, my "side job" is savior of Tamriel as a Dragonborn, weren't the Emperors Dragonborn back in Uriel Septim times? The entire game leads you through the shallow story on rails only :(

Motierre is the reason the Dark Brotherhood is on the rise again.

Why would any son or daughter of Sithis slay such a friend?

I had to stare at him for a long time deciding what to do. Alas, the old man guilted me into killing Motierre. I actually felt bad having to kill the emporor.

I killed him but I regret doing so, if only for RP reasons.

I killed him because I have so far completed ever secondary quest available. However, apart from the gems there is no incentive to do so.

The DB are a weakened group, killing the Emperor would be a very high profile contract, possibly very lucrative in terms of future contracts. The person who took the contract also being killed however - that's not gonna be good for business!

Besides, I read somewhere that the DB would never be foolhardy enough to assassinate an emperor due to the fact that the empire's troops would hunt them down mercilessly. It may have been in one of those books with the floating city. While those books don't come from someone working on Todd's team, they are still canon.

But, yeah, I digress. I did kill him but I regret doing so for reasons stated.

I was actually happy to get this chance to get rid of someone with note for the db. No guilt Just disappointment that the upper ranks of legion didn't seem to realize he was gone. No I didn't grant his wish, that would have been pretty out of character.

The DB's reputation isn't at stake, how could anyone know for certain that it was the brotherhood that killed him, and not some vagabond after the contents of his pockets?

Personally, I killed him.. loose ends and all that; I wouldn't want somebody walking around who knows the face of the man who killed the emperor. Not to mention the Emperor was impressively fearless in the face of his death, the small task of his last request is no trouble for someone well versed in silent killing.

EDIT: also, nobody could be certain to say that the DB took out the emperor if nobody saw you on the ship. After all, the Thalmor have their own assassins, and would be an obvious culprit.. Besides, they've moved from the only hideout anyone knew about, to one which is better hidden. It seems as though they'd be less likely to be found after moving across Skyrim.

I did not kill Motierre this time around because I did not even bother talking to or listening to the Emperor before killing him, so I did not even know about his wish for me to kill Mortierre. At the time I did this quest I had revenge on my mind after the original sanctuary was wiped out, I snuck onto that ship with the Blade of Woe (Legendary) in one hand, and Mehrunes Razor (Legendary) in the other intending to silently kill everyone on the ship without mercy. I quickly and silently went around cutting throats, and when I got to the Emperor I immediately went for the kill before he could scream or say anything.

The Emperor was very gracious and honourable about it and he accepted his death like a man, and for that I respected him, so I did fulfil his final wish by killing Motierre.

A db member accepts a contract in person, so there is always a loose end. If these people were killed at the end of the contracts because of them being a loose end, it wouldn't be good for business. Eventually the contracts would stop. So Motierre should be left alone.

Unfortunately with the new hideout the guards seem to know the location of a creepy door with construction going on. Those sorts of loose ends need to be dealt with.
