I killed Cesar and the head of his guards as well as everyone inside of the fort and the dam battle still happens. Thats because Cesars head General who is the real second in command is still alive and leads the legion army. He isnt in the fort for you to kill him so there is no stopping it. I looked every where for him so I could kill him but its not possible, the battle will happen no matter what you do.

No, Legate Lanius is still around. He'll lead the dam attack.

You did not kill his second-in-command. Legate Lanius is in a completely different camp.

Yes, you're probably thinking of either Vulpes Inculta, the Fruumentarius, or the head of the Praetorian Guard.

yh i had this question like a week ago myself. and i just beat the game after talking down the Legate :P. Yeah I know, OMG i didnt kill him yeah but....i woulda died. Arcade ditched me, Boone ditched me, and all my "support" stopped on the bridge. the boomers did their part though. so by the time I attacked the camp, all I had left was Cannibal Johnson, Doc Henry was with me but didnt go into the camp with Lanius for some reason. idk where the other remnants went. no reason for Arcade or Boone to ditch me either, one second they're with me in the dam, next they're MIA.

I did the same thing right at the very and after completing all the Legion quests up to the end. (I killed Caesar first on the operating table, but they forgave me for that).

After assassinating President Kimball, I went back and killed Lucius, Vulpes and all the Praetorians inside the tent using C-4 and Caesar's displacer glove. At that point I still could have completed the game on the Legion side, up until I met Yes Man in the Lucky 38. After you make your final choice to side with Yes Man at the Lucky 38, you can't side with Legion anymore. I think it's still possible to be friendly with NCR, but I went the independent route.

I played as a NCR hater / psycho style character first time, got to yes man and suddenly after a quest or two, found myself hated not knowing why..

So I went to cotton wood cove asap, and killed every bloody legionaire there and at the fort / caesars tent without blinking, and after killing every good damned NCR npc ended the game as Liked by that faction.

Now realising just how silly the legion is, and the fact they are truely a faceless Legion of one with no brains or soul, I tend to kill on sight...
Caesar is 100X worse in this so of course he's going to get it.

It's much like Mario.

"I'm sorry, Courier, but the Legate is in another camp."

hah, I did the C4 trap too, well got them outside the tent instead but it changed my mind on C4's effectiveness. Found Caesar's body over near the artillery piece :P

I thought that might pre-maturely end the Legion's assault too but oddly enough it was barely even acknowledged like most other far more insignificant things seem to be by random NPCs... like you steal a mug and everybody want's you dead. Kill Caesar and not even a congratulations.

my thinking is that if Caesar is dead, the legions have a conundrum: who is next Caesar. If I was the legate, who is now acting commander, I would attack the dam to hopefully win and use that fact to make being next caesar easier.

It's possible that Caesar had already established that the legate would be the new Caesar upon his death. He suspected (correctly) that he had a brain tumor, so he must have realized that unless a solution was found he would soon be dead. Making his second-in-command the heir to the title of Caesar avoids needless infighting, and explains why the assault on the dam is not affected at all by Caesar's death.

I suspect that the legate's death causes chaos within the Legion though, since the legate hadn't designated a second-in-command yet.

Boone and a few other NPCs have evidence suggesting that there's an entire chain of command, lasting for years. The death of this Ceasar would, and did, have little affect on the outcome. He doesn't control any of the Legion's forces, so I suppose the Legate is the most important figure.
