Killing Raiders is getting evil...

Post » Fri Jan 22, 2016 4:11 am

Ive heard their quotes and its starting to get to me. Most of them are just trying to survive. Read a terminal where one raider was mad at another for shooting at people who run away. Now I feel like an [censored] killing them, yea they kill people who try and kill them, same as BOS RR Institute and such. Thoughts?

Raiders may be "just trying to survive" but they're doing so by robbing and killing other people, usually people that aren't able to effectively defend themselves.

As proven by the Abernathys and the staff at the Slog it is possible to survive in the ruins without victimizing others. The raiders are just too lazy to do so. Plus they generally always take a shot at me even if I'm just passing by at a distance. As far as I'm concerned, when they catch that headshot from me they've chosen their fate.

Try walking up to them with your gun holstered and see how amicable they are to the old trope of "live and let live"...

If you walk unarmed up to a raider they will still attack on sight so that pretty much makes them evil. I don't mind killing raiders.

They made their choice when they chose to wear that giant blinking neon sign reading "Shoot me, plz! :) ".

Same applies to everyone who has ever boarded a Vertibird :P

Have you seen the tortured and mutilated bodies populating every raider hideout you come across? You honestly don't need to know anything else about them to know they are bad news. You're doing the defenseless (and sometimes not-so-defenseless) people of the wasteland a favor by eliminating them.

Like the BoS has a giant blinking sign on the side of their blimp. 'Permanent openings for Vertibird pilots.'

They usually shoot first, though, which makes it kind of a self defense move. Also, they do kinda mutilate people etc.

Didn't they use to yell at you in FO3? Like give you a warning to not come any closer? In FO4 they just attack for added gunfights.

In FO4 there are now raiders and scavengers. Raiders are the no-morals-attached shoot-on-sight bad guys. Scavengers are dudes that are essentially raiders, but will only shoot if you get too close. However, the latter group is usually found near some randomly spawned refrigerator or other container with loot inside.

I've heard it all now...sympathy for the lowest form of life in the wasteland who murder and plunder those who can't defend themselves and have zero interest in actually rebuilding a coherent society.

I busted in on this Cottage near the harbor where there was just one lone Raider living there with a cat. I felt pretty bad about killing him, and wondered who the real raider was in that situation, me, or the man just trying to defend his property.

I got some consolation by realizing that the cat would at least be able to eat the raider and not starve to death

Sure it wasn't a scavenger? They only attack if provoked.

I see them differently after reading the terminal journal from a group of minutemen turned raider. When society shuts you out and you're starving, in charge of a group of comrades who are starving, can you blame them for going back to the town that shut them out and taking what you need?

Generally speaking, lots of societies chose to survive by raiding. In many cases, they were paid to either fight for other societies or bribed into leaving others alone, but it Is a survival strategy. For that alone, you'd have reason for feeling bad for killing what amounts to people surviving.

Until, you know, you get to the whole torture, mutilation, enjoying murder for the sake of murder...

I recall sneaking into one raider camp and taking a few minutes to let a couple of raiders share a story. I was going to let them live... up until they laughed at the punchline of burning/drowning their new friend to death for the lulz.

No, it was a Raider, he opened fire as soon as we walked in, I returned fire and didn't realize what had happened until after the smoke cleared and the cat meowed at me.

Yeah, I've killed a couple that were just one guy and his dog. Had I known I would have just moved on.

They're not all the no-moral monsters that people think they are...I couldn't find the journal text but Wiki sums up the situation for one of the raider groups-

On my second playthrough I went straight for the "Animal Friend", "Wasteland Whisperer" and "Intimidation" as soon as possible so at least everyone gets a fair shake.

It kind of reminds me of Two Face flipping his coin lol.

But I miss being able to throw on some dead raider gear and sneaking into their society and seeing what's up with that world. Maybe someone will Mod it?

You must be new to modern day media culture. Now even the most amoral, twisted, sadistically evil person has a tragic sob story created in the hopes the readers and viewers alike will feel sorry for them and excuse their atrocities. Oh, it's OK if you torture and murder people, Mr. Raider, you just have a very difficult life.

Seriously though, it's the Wasteland. If they're dumb enough to start shooting at a Sole Survivor decked out in armor and wielding a minigun, then no tragic ‘Boo hoo, look at how badly my life svcks!!’ story in the world will save them.

Ye'h. Some of them are in, what I like to say, the early stages of being a Raider. Makes me sad a bit about killing some of them. Others though, I'll flat-out slaughter them. Best way to know what stage they are in is usually by playing a sneak character and listen to them talk to each other. You can get a good idea of which ones are more human-like and which ones are more non-human like.
