Kilts

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 8:24 am

I would like to see it used in smal towns in the higthlands, but on another side ,kilts is wery.........well......Scothish :D

I must disagree a kilt or kilt-like vestement is found all throughout Europe throughout history including the Ottomans =) therefore they should be in game IMO

Kilts originated in the 16th century, so they have nothing to do with the middle ages, Braveheart (except the poorly costumed movie) or vikings.

I agree that Braveheart was wrong. William Wallace was a lowlander he would have worn trousers regardless of time period, but non tartaned kilts had been worn prior. It simply became a part of the clan system in the 16th century. (Had to consult a neolithic expert my family knows that lives in Edinburgh). I like how it would fit into the civil war theme though.

Kilts are Celtic Cultural thats why their name also , but this game is more Viking oriented so I guess no Kilts ...

1) The naming of kilts is not etymologically related to Celt at all; it's actually from a Scandinavian word meaning "to tuck." The origin of Celt is uncertain but is first attested in Greek "Keltoi"; possibly related to a word meaning "to cut."
2) The ancient Celts wore trews (trousers) among the lower classes and robes among the upper classes.
3) Kilts are not specifically Celtic per se. The Egyptains wore kilts when the Celtic culture had not yet developed from the Halstatt culture or even the broader Indo-European culture. Many other Europeans wore kilts. The Norse wore kilts.
4) There's a strong Celtic influence in the Nords anyway. Yes, the bulk of Nord inspiration comes from the Germanic Anglo-Saxons and Norse, but there's a decided Celtic influence too (a little bit of Gaulish, but mostly Brythonic).

I bow my head and tip my hat. Well stated sir. you never stated your opinion on their potential implementation though =)

Erm. Download Blender. Read a few tutorials. Mod in your own kilts. I don't see why this is an issue.

While I don't think kilts are necessary, I'm really sick of this "Who cares what the game is like, let it be awful and we'll just mod it" attitude. The majority of the market is console users anyway.

Thank you. It's true, I forgot it during my rant; I definitely want them in, but I can live without tartans. ;)

Well it would be a shame to let the new cloth physics go to waste. Actually cloth physics + kilt + strong breeze = :blush2:

As for lore etc, badass Braveheart inspired Morrowind Nords >>>> boring generic Oblivion Nords any day.

Ok guys... Skyrim is not Europe. Not every aspect of European culture has to be in Skyrim. It is a unique and individual universe

Gaels who interbred with the Norseman lived in Northern Scotland where the Kilt comes from. Plus the Kilt comes from multiple Germanic (that doesnt mean German) cultures including the Norse or as everyone likes to label all of them, the vikings. Its important to remember though that not all the norwegians were seafaring pillagers. Many were farmers who settled around Orkney and Shetland. The cultures in these areas are extremely familiar.

Also on a somewhat related thought, what about more historical small blades such as a traditional Sgian-dubh or a dirk? Or, in a more Scandinavian form, perhaps a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seax?

what about this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puukko puukko/mora

Even if it did TES is not the real world. People are really beginning to mistake it as such.

Border Scot, my lore research indicates the same. Some of the Norse settled in, and never left.

I've got the legs for a kilt too, it's in my genes.
Though on a cold day I bring an extra sock for my extra foot.

As to should they be in why not, many cultures irl apart from the gaelic peoples have used some form.
