Kind of hoping for a media blackout

Is anyone else in this mindset?

Think about it, a lot of why Oblivion felt bad was simply because we ate up the previews for the game like candy, and when Bethesda showed their massive E3 gameplay presentation (which was entirely scripted) it sealed the deal.

Oblivion wasn't bad, but the pure saturation of media really dilluted the experience for me when I finally played it.

Now that Skyrim is coming out, I'm afraid of it happening again. The trailer looks excellent, and I'm tempted to say that's all I really needed (in addition to all the previews we've had) to be sold on the game. Wouldn't be be great if that was the last bit bit of media we got until the release?

I know you can say "Just don't watch anything else", and that's entirely a valid point. But I know me, and I probably won't be able to resist watching more gameplay footage or reading more previews before release, which will "ruin" the magic if you will. And I imagine most people are like this too. I'm not saying I would hate to have stuff like screenshots or concept art released here and there from here on out, to keep the hype engine going. I'm simply saying that I'm afraid of a big "Oblivion-style" E3 walkthrough video being done and spoiling the experience before release, and me not being able to resist watching along with many others in the same mindset.

I've always wanted to try and play a game I know I'd already want on day one with little to no media seen of it, but it's always hard when devs release media for it like candy and when I want to measure just how good my purchase would be. It's a flaw of human nature, and I'm a victim of it! It would be easy to experience this if Bethesda were to adopt a media-light strategy up till release, at least as far as major previews or in depth gameplay videos go. I mean, it's not like this is a small game that needs coverage, so why pump tons of coverage out? It'll just spoil it ;)

True thats why now im not going to read things about the game.. just if they show gameplay ill watch

A short period of no information would be okay, but certainly not until Skyrim's release. By then, all the trailers of ME3, GoW3, MW3, BF3 (notice all the 3s?) might have stolen the hype from non-TES fans.

The trailer did, however, make me feel like not playing anything and I ended up playing Oblivion again.

And AC3 Uncharted 3 Resistance 3.

Interesting topic, I am personally very torn about this kind of thing; always have been. Part of me wants the things in the game to come as a surprise so that I can get the full enjoyment from it, but another part of me is anxious for any and all information about Skyrim that I can get. In an ideal world, I'd liked to have remained blissfully ignorant of the game's launch until a short time before it happened that way I could have gotten excited about it, not had very long to wait and not had to risk getting myself overhyped or risk some of the shine taken from the game by knowing too much about it.

However this blissfully ignorant state with Skyrim was an impossibility, I've been a fan of The Elder Scrolls since the days of Daggerfall. As a result I'd been checking for news of TES V for some time now(after I'd reached the point where I'd played Oblivion to death and tried all the player made content I liked the look of.) and now that I've seen a trailer and have a launch date I'm hungry for more information to pass the time. I personally feel, that provided the don't reveal too much of the story itself, and they keep one or two of the key features back; I'm all in favour of revealing more information.

Might be time to dust off the previous TES games to get myself a bit of a fix to tide me over for a bit of the time.

So a few people cant resist, and everyone else who doesn't care can't have any screenshots? Isn't this why drugs are illegal? :stare:

I have to agree that there should be some sort of, well not a media black-out as such, but more a 'lull' in information coming out from Bethesda. Afterall, I find it surprizing that they have released so much so soon before the game has actually been released. Sure, 3 months prior fair enough on the level that is alreadly out there now, but still, 9 months to go ? The level of detail on sites out there about the game alreadly is incredible, music, whats in the game alreadly, features etc. Surely there wont be much left to release about it, yes it is a huge game and such, but still much of it will hopefully will be kept under wraps until release. Reviewers are alreadly piecing together key areas which look likely to be of key importance to the central storyline. Fingers crossed for a slight lull for now, until a couple of months :P.

I know what you mean. I was recommended Oblivion by a friend, and so didn't know anything about the game when I bought it. As a result I was absolutely blown away. I read a fair bit about Morrowind before deciding to buy it, and while it was still an amazing and thoroughly enjoyable game, I never got that same "magical feeling I did with Oblivion. Don't get me wrong, I love Morrowind, but Oblivion will always hold a place in my heart.

Maybe I shouldn't read up on Skyrim. I wish I had that willpower. I'm well and truly hooked on Bethesda and will continue to read every single scrap they release.

I'm buying this game regardless so yes, I feel an over saturation of media past this point might spoil things more for me, especially anything related to the story. At this point I'm going to just have to preoccupy myself with other means.

Hopefully between Heroes of Stalingrad and my guitar I should have enough to tide me till November.
