Kind of hoping for a media blackout

Post » Sun May 29, 2011 12:28 am

Is anyone else in this mindset?

Think about it, a lot of why Oblivion felt bad was simply because we ate up the previews for the game like candy, and when Bethesda showed their massive E3 gameplay presentation (which was entirely scripted) it sealed the deal.

Oblivion wasn't bad, but the pure saturation of media really dilluted the experience for me when I finally played it.

Now that Skyrim is coming out, I'm afraid of it happening again. The trailer looks excellent, and I'm tempted to say that's all I really needed (in addition to all the previews we've had) to be sold on the game. Wouldn't be be great if that was the last bit bit of media we got until the release?

I know you can say "Just don't watch anything else", and that's entirely a valid point. But I know me, and I probably won't be able to resist watching more gameplay footage or reading more previews before release, which will "ruin" the magic if you will. And I imagine most people are like this too. I'm not saying I would hate to have stuff like screenshots or concept art released here and there from here on out, to keep the hype engine going. I'm simply saying that I'm afraid of a big "Oblivion-style" E3 walkthrough video being done and spoiling the experience before release, and me not being able to resist watching along with many others in the same mindset.

I've always wanted to try and play a game I know I'd already want on day one with little to no media seen of it, but it's always hard when devs release media for it like candy and when I want to measure just how good my purchase would be. It's a flaw of human nature, and I'm a victim of it! It would be easy to experience this if Bethesda were to adopt a media-light strategy up till release, at least as far as major previews or in depth gameplay videos go. I mean, it's not like this is a small game that needs coverage, so why pump tons of coverage out? It'll just spoil it ;)

Maybe I want to know if the game will actually be any good. Them saying "it will be good" doesn't do it for me; I need to know and process information.

Also, hype sells, so why would they stop. Seriously, use your head, bro.

I kinda agree with what you're saying, its actually happened to me recently, I figured "Wow, this game is going to be amazing judging by this footage" only to be disappointed in the end. I have faith in Bethesda though, Besides, I couldn't resist eating up any new information..

You got to learn to control yourself. I won't watch anymore videos myself and I ignore all storyline based info. Soon I will start playing FNV so I will stop coming to these boards for a while, instead going to the FNV mod board. For FNV, the only info I read was from the very first preview which had like 14 pics and some info but FNV have a lot of similarities to FO3 so I already knew basic gameplay mechanics, TES reinvent themself each time so I want to know gameplay mechanics to gauge my expectations, so I don't over hype myself them and get disappointed.

For example I did not know of the reduction in armor slots in OB and was dissopointed when I first found out in the starter dungeon, which would not have happen if I knew a bit more about gameplay stuff.

You should know what to expect. Don't hype yourself up to much, its only your fault. The only person that dissapoints you is yourself for having high expectations.

But I believe Beth will deliver, they always have with me even though I disagree with many of their design ideas, I still enjoy playing their game for the most part.

But there's already hype...?

And we already know how all the magic systems and etc work?

I thikn you need to re-read my post.

And this is what the purpose of reviews and first hand player accounts are for from the released version. You can't honestly say information from Bethesda themselves will be anything more than an interpretation of them saying "It will be good". It's not information, it's marketing. Sure we can find out info about the game, but we already have the relevant info we need. Anything else from this point forward is going to be marking blable or lots of gameplay, which will dillute the actual first-time experience players have if they've svcked it all in, like what happened with Oblivion

I'm simply saying it'll be nice if they make it easy on me and do a media blackout so everyone's first impression is much much stronger and more powerful

I know they probably won't, this is simply me being all mopey about my lack of self control and knowing that I won't be able to resist the inevitable detailed gameplay footage that will be released (even if I already know how the gameplay will work out from the previews so far).

You can learn quite a lot about the game purely from the info they give you, even if they say it will be well done. For example, "no spears in the traditional sense" clearly means what it means. Now I don't care all that much about spears, but it means what it means-- it does not mean "Skyrim will be good" or "Skyrim will be bad". The hype will say the game will be good and attempt to show people this, and that will make the game sell more copies.

I think you fail to understand how a business works. Hype is created for the purpose of getting sales. If it dilutes the first time experience, then whatever, the game still sold well, and it still got solid reviews from all the big magazines and sites. It was a commercial success, like Oblivion was. There's no logical reason for Bethesda to stop the marketing, as it helps them get more money. There's also no reason for me to not look at the marketing, because I want to see the kinds of features the game will have.

I know what you mean, but I can't help but clamour for more info. :P As long as I keep the actual info separate in my head from the generated hype and speculation, I reckon my hopes won't be dashed.

The hype for Oblivion never stopped me from enjoying it. But I see you're point, because there have been a lot of instances where players have been dissappointed in a game that really wasn't bad because it was hyped up to be more than it turned out to be, Oblivion was by no means alone in this, but I don't think Bethesda is going to hold off on releasing further information to avoid that, and I'm not really sure if it would do much good if they did. At this point, I think there's already too much hype for that. If Bethesda doesn't give us anymore information, than players are just going to start speculating, and that could prove even more dangerous than hype provided by the developers, because at least that is based on actual information from a source that could be expected to know what they're talking about. If Bethesda gives out misleading information, it's their own fault, but fan speculation may be founded on nothing but whatever crazy fantasies the fans have of what the game might be, or what they hope it will be.

In short, Bethesda isn't going to stop giving out information so long before release, I'm not sure if we'll see another trailer, but we'll definitely at least see more screenshots, previews and concept art.

Part of the reason I enjoyed Oblivion so much was I knew very little about the game, as I was new to The Elder Scrolls (I have now played them all). If I had known too much about the game's storyline, characters, quests, towns... I know i wouldn't have enjoyed it as much without the surprise factor. I hope to still have some things to discover for myself in Skyrim.

Please anyone associated with Bethesda don't reveal any more about the storyline and settlements. I already know too much.

Although I would like to see some non nord npcs and I'm curious about the new engine and the limits of radiant story. But things like crafting and towns I can discover for myself.

What I think he is saying, is that it would be more satisfying to play the game, not knowing what it would be like, than read all the previews and [censored] and already know what you are going to play.

Would I be correct?

Yeah. I think people are taking me a little too seriously and hard (though its kind of my fault for going off on a tangent in my OP)

Bethesda will sell a crapload of this simply by name and all the info we already have, so I was stating that something like a media blackout (or only showing key things, like how combat works etc) would be possible and make it so the first impression is a little sweeter ;)

I understand I can probably just try to ignore the media released afterwards, and simply stated how nice it would be if Bethesda made it easy and did it for me :v

A short period of no information would be okay, but certainly not until Skyrim's release. By then, all the trailers of ME3, GoW3, MW3, BF3 (notice all the 3s?) might have stolen the hype from non-TES fans.

The trailer did, however, make me feel like not playing anything and I ended up playing Oblivion again.

I'll just avoid the spoilers. all the technology info, gameplay info, what armor sets, regions, AI, etc is welcomed by me.

As long as I don't don't want to know what actually happens.

It really doesn't dilute the experience for me , the only games if ever been excited about were Assassins' Creed Brotherhood and GTA IV and I read every detail I could find on these and still enjoyed both these games thoroughly so I don't have this problem and can't wait for Bethesda's E3 conference.

It's a good idea for you.

But it's a very very bad idea for Bethesda. They need to show off their game from time to time with some new stuff, to draw more attention to it, especially from people who aren't that familiar with TES.

So, it would be best if you just tried harder to resist that temptation :P

the thing is though there are some peopl who simply won't fork out cash to a game they have little info and video's to get a view on what its like.. even if its part of one of thier favourite series'
