Kinda funny them saying hello

Post » Fri Sep 04, 2009 6:31 am

You say hello to people, they say it back, people in oblivion say it. You say it when you answer a phone... But wait, people in oblivion say it? Thats a bit illogical :P

I am going to go with the mindset that Oblivion is set time wise in the middle ages.
Its weird that they say hello, since in that time the word hello wasn't even heard of.
When alexander graham bell invented the telephone, he wanted the greeting for answering it to be ahoy... But Thomas Edison disagreed and said it should be 'Hello'
Before that time Hello was not a word in the English language.... or any other

So its kind of funny that they say Hello, though its not even a word then :P
This isnt some kind of rant thread just a funny little 'did you know'

Any comments? :P

If only Bell got his way. I'd love to sound like a true sea-farer every time I answer the phone!

Got a point...

But then again...

The Elder Scrolls aren't set on Earth, but a whole different world. And sure...They're in the primeval ages with swords, bows, armor, and the essence of magic...

But since they're not on OUR planet...would it not really of mattered? O.o I just see it sort'a differently 'cause of this fact.

They say syndicates of wizards have led a boycott of Imperial goods in the land of the Altmer.

Just because it did not exist in our world's English until Thomas Edison does not mean it could not have existed in their English in the time of Oblivion.

An interesting point. But, as Little RΣnegade pointed out, the TES games don't take place on Earth. It's a completely different planet, so it makes sense that the language would be a bit different. For all we know, every bit of dialogue we hear could be magically translated into something we can understand. As for words that don't get translated (n'wah comes to mind), perhaps there is no known equivalent.

It's not middle ages. It's set in an entirely different universe and world.

They are not speaking English. They are speaking Cyrodiilic, which by coincidence happens to sound a whole lot like English (on some discs).
