Kinect for PC... because it will happen.

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 6:22 am

To make a long story short... Kinect has been hacked for PC use and Microsoft is OK with that. They went so far as to say that they didn't even protect this area of the intellectual property because they expected it. Really, they played it smart and got the work done for free from the modding community Where they got that idea, I don't know. :whistling:

So here is some details:

http://www.pcworld.com/article/211299/microsoft_flipflops_on_kinect_computer_hack.html

"What has happened," continued Kipman, "is someone wrote an open source driver for PCs that essentially opens the USB connection, which we didn't protect by design, and reads the inputs from the sensor. The sensor, again as I talked earlier, has eyes and ears, and that's a whole bunch of noise that someone needs to take and turn into signal."

...and a video of Minecraft on Kinect:

http://www.crunchgear.com/2011/01/24/kinect-minecraft-full-motion-3d-statues/

So while Kinect won't happen on the 360, for a PC though it is just a matter of someone getting around to doing it.

So what's possible? Face generation? Gameplay? Putting real objects into the Creation Kit for use in mods? ...oh that could open up modding so much.

For modding this would be huge you'll just need to use multiple kinnects, and you'll have to sharpen the image somehow. For that you'll have to physicall moddify the kinnect itself with a higher resolution camera.

12gb's of ddr3 right here sirs.

What i love about kinect is how people looks like tards:
Driving with an imaginary wheel;
Fighting anyway and actually succeeding when they should have failed;
Shooting imaginary weapons...

its so funny in the first 5 seconds.

Some people must really love kinect.

You don't have to wait for microsoft anyway, since primesense, the company that made the camera for kinect is working with asus create the same device for the PC, it has a really dumb name though I hear.

Good to hear, not that I'd use it.

Tried a store display and it was just too weird and awkward pretending to hold an imaginary ball.

I think the best thing is the potential for mods. If you can take real world objects and put them into the Creation Kit then the customization is practically endless. Even if the detail is lacking you can still use it for unique meshes and add better textures after. Want your Skyrim home to have the same lamp or desk or nicknack that you do at home? Now it could be much easier.

I'm not sure how gameplay would work, but Kinect has a microphone. Imagine actually having to shout the Shouts.

Kinect + Wiimote like + HMD = Incredible Virtual Reality solution:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDlvn3voblQ

TRUE!

But this solution working on a game like Elder Scrolls? I doubt!

For just kinect the better way will be translating a movement to simulate a buton... And it would not be so cool... How would will walk around with kinect?

Something like that youtube link would be simply awesome with an ElderScroll game... But i really think it is impossible... a Kinect Game should me developed to work with Kinect... It′s not the case of Elderscrolls...

So... why make compatibility for it if only one platform can use it without issues?

Not to mention most people don't really have Kinects, nor plan on getting one.

Also, besides the shoddy facial recognition technology and voice recognition, it can't be used much for gameplay because something like The Elder Scrolls just requires the input of buttons, which the Kinect doesn't have. Not to mention most of the game's functions can't be easily duplicated my just waving your arms and body about.

Oh, and I believe you have to be a certain distance away for the Kinect to even register you, like 6 ft., so seeing as most PC players are 1-2 ft. away from their monitors and some (like me) don't have that much room to move around, how would it even work properly? Not to mention you have to stand up, which only means, unless you have your computer connected to a large HDTV (which most don't), that you won't be able to see said game that well while looking down from 6 ft. away.

So I have 3 words to sum this all up.

IT'S NOT HAPPENING!!!

It wasn't really "hacked", as it requires no modification, either soft or hard, to the device itself. It 'just works', it was just a case of reverse engineering the protocols.

Kinect in skyrim could be fun for a few hours, and while I wouldn't like to see it by default there's already software that will let you send key input based on movements - no first party support required for kinect on skyrim PC-side.

The thing is that since Bethesda knows it doesn't have enough memory for use on the 360, then maybe they already have some idea of how Kinect would work for gameplay. If Bethesda looked into the Kinect for Skyrim, then it is possible that a Kinect control system could be done... and if Bethesda can work out the control scheme, then there is a control scheme to be figured out by others.

As for the distance from the monitor issue, I've hooked up my desktop to my home theater system before, though I could just hook up my laptop to it for Skyrim because it is so much easier to move.

Lastly, any use of Kinect with Skyrim is almost certain to come from the modding community. I can tell from your intro of... "So... why make compatibility for it if only one platform can use it without issues?" that your thinking like a console user. PC users aren't dependent on the support of corporations. Bethesda doesn't need to lift a finger. If they have some stuff to share with the modder who takes up the task, that would make things easier though.

I don't think you understand what the OP said. Its not that Bethesda or Microsoft is going to take on the feat of creating a Kinect Skyrim. That will be left to the underground kinect developers.

And I guess, so long as the option exists, it can be done. And no matter how big your text is, it'll probably happen, unless Microsoft takes legal action against these people.

They won't, they're repeatedly stated that they're fine with people writing drivers to use kinect on other devices, and it requires no modification of the hardware. Even if they didn't like it (which they do, that's why they made it easy to do) they have no legal grounds to stop anybody doing it.
