A Knife in the Dark (best way to kill someone)

Post » Fri Jan 14, 2011 5:58 am

I've been trying to get the Dark Brotherhood quest chain for some time now. I've killed that Garthir (the crazy guy in Skingrad), and the Rogue Mage north of Anvil (for the Anvil Recommendation quest), but no luck.

Who is the best target to kill to gain that quest so I can join the Dark Brotherhood?

To get the Knife in the Dark quest you have to kill someone who is innocent. The best way to get that quest would be to kill any of the 3 people in Blackenmarch or the Grey Prince if you finish his quest.

My character had a particular background story that allowed her to aim at rulers, nobility and imperial guards. Its really up to ur character.

I also found Mazroga the Orcess particularly annoying and so I crudely put an arrow between those stupid eyes of hers.

The Annoying Fan also seems perfect!

The best target to kill would be an innocent civilian. The Rouge Mage doesn't count because they're not "innocent." And once Glarthir goes Axe-Weilding crazy, he's no longer "innocent" either. Neither are most Arena contestants

That means you're gonna have to kill someone in cold blood, and that means someone who doesn't attack you until you make the first blow. Bandits/Marauders/Necromancer/Rouge Conjugation mages don't count.

Bascially, almost all the targets in the "Go kill this guy" quest will NOT count.

However...

If you do the Arena Sidequest for the Grand Champion, and then kill him as part of the Arena quest, that will give you the quest (because he basically lays his head down on the chopping block, thereby gaining the "innocent civilian" title.)

If you've already killed him... well, there's always Mephala's quest. Grab some nightshade and wait at it's shrine until midnight, and then grab the quest. You'll end up killing two "innocent civilians" by the end of the quest chain.

Killing anybody else, unless you're damn good at it, will run the high risk of the guards trying to arrest/kill you. But hey, if you kill one of those guards, THEY count too!

I found a little village, broke into a home and killed the resident in her sleep. Then rested up in her bed and waited for Lucias to visit me while I slept.

I usually do the DB initiation by just waiting until someone gets killed in a brawl and I'm blamed for it. Any fights in a city are likely to end up that way, because NPC's are always leaping between the player and the target and getting hit when they're just trying to help. If they've already taken a few hits, you may finish them off.

Anything more specific would belong in spoilers.

Where is Blackenmarch?
Would the Blackwood Company work in that questline?

EDIT: I'm guessing you meant Blankenmarch.

My current character a Argonian Assassin with the shady name ' The Nameless One' - doesn't like Beggars specially non Argonian Beggars he has no problem dealing with them on a 'less than nice way' - he also is quite egocentrical and thinks the Argonians are the only 'true race' ....

Doesn't main that he calls all non Argonians in the game , he isn't retarted ...

A useful target is a mounted guard alone on patrol.
Such a victim will challenge you while mounted, then dismount so you can attack them, quite unmercifully whilst they are dismounting.
Once the target is completely dead, not only do you get the DB questline, you also get a free horse.

Start a quest in which you have to kill someone anyway, then just kill them before they turn hostile. That way you don't kill someone for no reason, and it is considered as murder.

The "Sirens Deception" quest, and the (I forgot the name, the quest about that Wood Elf in the Market District who sells stuff cheap). In both of those, when you enter a room, the enemy walks towards you to speak, before attacking you. Just hit them before they speak. Or a split second after they are done speaking.

You could also do the quest in Bruma where there is a vampire killer. "A Brotherhood Betrayed" or something like that..

The old man who lives near Weyen or however it's spelt near the Imperial city bridge.
Talk to him and while he's explaining how a bunch of fish pwned him, laugh, he wont talk to you ever again, and kill him. (:<

I always go to the Bruma Skooma Den and wait until they go to sleep, then kill them all. They all pretty much die in one hit even when you just left the sewer and the Skooma fetches a pretty penny.

Kill someone non-important (you might want to look it up on the UESP), but do it elaboratly. Plan out your assassination. Learn their schedules. Get on top of a building, find someone who's walking about at night, and snipe them with a poisoned arrow. Pay yourself for a successful assassination (you can roleplay that you were taking out a contract on that particular person)/

Everyone in Bravil is pretty easy to kill, but beggars are an especially good idea, as they have little health, and die in one hit with an iron arrow..

It sounds like you have done the Arcane University recommendations. Here is a snip from chapter 30 of my character's journal:

* * *
"Goodbye, Earana," I whispered.

At a well-practiced point in my breathing cycle, I paused. The fluid sequence that followed was the result of muscle memories developed through years of bow hunting. The bowstring came back to my ear, the arrow's tip found its final aim point well above Earana's head, and the fingers of my right hand that restrained the arrow uncurled.

The missile disappeared into the darkness of a high arc that would carry it across the city of Chorrol. After what seemed a breathless eternity, Earana was knocked from her feet. The pink glow quickly faded.

I very briefly had an ominous feeling - as if my actions had been observed by forces unknown. No time to think about that now, Buffy. I quietly moved along the east wall to quickly offset myself from the line of flight my arrow had traveled.

* * *

How did Buffy react to Mr. Lechance's visit?

As a naive orphan, she was quite taken by the prospect of a loving family. In fact, she made her way to to visit Rufio and wrestled with what to do. Although she is quick to embrace vengeance, ultimately, she decided her killing is not for hire. She did not consumate her entry into the DB.

That's the short story. The longer answer is detailed in Chapters 30-33 of her journal - a four episode miniseries called 'Dancing with Darkness'. Chapter 32 is her visit to Rufio. :)
