Knights of the Wasteland

"Holy [censored].. Is that..." wandered one of the Purple Vipers, scratching the back of his head, dumbfounded.

"A tank? I'm pretty sure it is, Phillis," stammered another, trying to keep calm even with this massive discovery.

The Chinese battle tank was a gargantuan thing, and it seemed to be in working order.

"Hahah! C'mon let's take it for a test drive eh?" shouted Phillis, rushing down to the vehicle.

"Wait! This could be a trap.. Maybe Talon Company is comin' for us again," said another.

"Oh shut up, where would those stupid mercs get a piece o' work like this?!" Phillis retorted.

"Oh um I dunno, maybe from right [censored] here?" he snorted back, spitting in the dust.

"Good point," said Phil, now leaning on the vehicle. "Hey Artois wanna give me a boost?"

"Sure thing, Phil," replied a tall, lanky man that appeared to be in his forties. All of the Vipers were clad in purple trenchcoats, sown together with copper wire.

Artois grunted, lifting the shorter, chubbier man onto the top of the tank. He popped open the trap door and slid into the tank. "Hey, it's pretty neat in here," called out the man, and Artois leaped up over the side of the tank, tumbling clumsily through the hatch. "You ok Arty?"

"Yeah, fine. You're right, it's pretty chillin' in here," said the man, scratching his black stubble.

"Egh. I bet there's a ton of gas stored back at the base.." Phillis said, climbing back out of the tank, "Oi John, go back to HQ and get some fragging gas eh?"

"Ugh, whatever Phillis."

Phil sidled back in, still awestruck by the find, and the condition of the beastly vehicle. "Hey, get some purple and green paint too hmm? We can't be rolling around the wastes in a piece of junk that doesn't even display our banner."

"Once again, Phillis, whatever," said John, bringing two other men with him back to the base.

"Man is Murtel gonna love this," said Artois, referring to the Purple Vipers' mechanic.

"Yeah, I'm sure he will."

"Ugh, whatever Phillis."

Phil slid back in,

A couple of spelling mistakes, although I wasn't 100% sure if they were on purpose. Aside from that, nice start, although I'm hoping to see a bigger chapter two.

Oh and welcome to the fallout fan fic section. Is this your first fallout fan fic?

I liked this it is a bright and interesting story.
.
On a side note, however, fuel is often believed to be either scarce or non-existent in the FO Universe (which is onna the biggest complaints about FO:Tactics having fuel everywhere.). So our heroes are on their way to a real treasure!
.
Looking forward to your next installment!

Oh hah.. I'm not very knowledgeable in Fallout lore. I had no idea fuel was scarce.. I just thought they thought it would go against the last games too much if they put in vehicles. I guess in my fanfic they have fuel.

P.S.: You'll find out later why the fanfic is called "Knights of the Wasteland. :D

I figured there was fuel in Fallout cuz of weapons like the ripper, and the chainsaws in The Pitt

Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure they ran out of fuel a while ago and it was replaced by some type of nuclear power or something. But thats quite a good point about rippers and auto axes.

Heh.. Here's Chapter Two.

Chapter Two: EPABS

Murtel hadn't come out in three weeks, except to eat. He had forbid anyone and everyone from entering his station, where they had parked the monstrous tank. The old mechanic was obviously planning something big, and no one knew what it was.

"Hey Phillis," said Artois, patting Phil on the shoulder and giving him a high-five.

"So what do you think Murtel is planning eh?" asked the taller man.

"It better be cool. If he mutilates the tank I--we found, I'll murder him, I swear."

"Don't say that to the wrong people, they might take it the wrong way," warned Artois.

"Oh stow it, Art," retorted the chubby man.

A loudspeaker boomed out the morning news nearby, "Report to the Mess Hall immediately. Once again, all personel report to the mess hall immediately," the voice belonged to the Viper General, sounding powerful as ever.

"I wonder what that's all about eh?"

"Probably Murtel collapsed dead from sleep deprivation."

"Hah! Ol' Murtel's got a brain like steel, if anything's gonna take him down, it's gonna' be old age. I wouldn't be surprised if the bastard lives forever," said Phil, his cropped purple hair gleaming in the radiated sunlight.

The pair entered the Mess Hall, which used to be a decrepit bar. There was a make-shift stage at one end of the room, looking like several of the wooden planks were long due to being replaced.

Murtel was standing on top of the wooden stage, hunched over and leaning on his cane as usual, and even more so because of his exhaustion from the last few weeks.

"Oi Murtel, wut ya done with our tank eh?" shouted a rowdy individual, several men looking his way.

"Some of you may or may not like it, and I hate speeches, so I'm not going to bore you with one. I'm going to get straight to the point. That point is, our fuel stocks are growing very, very short. As you all know, we have a generator nearby to supply us with enough electricity to power quite a bit. I have converted this.. Tank... From an pile of rusted metal, into ten EPABS units. EPABS stands for Electrically Powered Armored Battle Suit."

Several cries of distate rang out from the crowd, but were swiftly cut short when the curtains were pulled back, revealing the madman's creations.

The hoots of dissapointment quickly turned into howls and shouts of joy, and Phillis joined in.

On the stage were ten extremely bulky full suits of armor. The men could feel the sheer power eminating from them, the time and care put into them by Murtel.

"Holy [censored], Murtel. You old bastard! You old crazy coot! You've made masterpieces out of an out of date tank!" screamed Phillis, who was clapping furiously. Several other members began clapping, followed by another few, and then all of them were clapping, the noise reverbrating and echoing throughout the Mess Hall.

"Please, please. Such applause is not required, only volunteers to test 'em out," croaked the old man, and waved off the hands, as every single ex-mercenary in the room raised his or her arm into the air. "I will pick who gets to go, so quit yer yappin'," Murtel held up a small scrap of paper, which obviously held the list. "Artois Melinguel. Manuel. Seth Baker. Sean Peleus. Phillis Vespasian. Karro Weinberg. Gerrus Kayne. Tanisha Jones. Ratchet Lechouser. Fulgrim."

Every man or woman not called booed in disappointment, but still excited about seeing the suits in action.

"Holy [censored], Artois! We got picked! Damnit, man this is great! We get to walk around the battlefield like a God!" shouted Phil after Murtel was done announcing.

"Yeah no [censored]! Am I dreaming?" said Artois loudly, but his voice was swept away from the noise the other Purple Vipers were making.

To my knowledge, the oil was all used up during the Resources Wars. As for Rippers, in previous FO games, you needed Small Energy Cells to run them and, again, I simply assumed AutoAxes would run on the same source. However, E Cells don't seem to be too common in The Pitt. And the nuclear power you're thinking of is Fission (hence the fission batteries).

Murtel had outdone himself. The EPABS were absolutely amazing, the most advanced piece of equipment Phillis had ever experienced. In such a heavy suit, the insides would get sweltering hot. The old mechanic has installed a coolant system into each of the battle suits.

The armor basically lifted itself, and the view-screen was as wide as normal vision, and a everything seemed a little clearer and brighter. As if it could see right through the drifting radiation. There was a short-length radio system built into the helmet that allowed the Viper-Knights to talk with each other. The only downside to the armor was the bulkiness, but it made up for that by far, being as it could basically withstand a missile shot. There were various make-shift weapons set out for each individual.

Altois's EPABS was slightly less bulky than the others, allowing more agility, but lowering the resistance of the metal. His weapons were a ripper, enhanced to be as long and sturdy as a broadsword, and have a lot more kick. It took a lot of energy to run, but for the importance of the missions the knights would embark on far surpassed the need for ammunition. He also had his "lucky" energy pistol magnetized to his side where his right hand could easily grab it off.

Phillis has two weapons. One was his left gauntlet, which was substantially larger than the other, and crackled with blue electricity when he flicked a switch inside the gauntlet with his index finger. The other was an assault rifle that he, with the suit, would easily be able to handle one-handed.

The others' weapons were somewhat similar, two of them also carrying modified rippers and energy fists.

They were just outside the Viper HQ, showing off their magnificence to the rest of the Vipers who just sneered at them.

The General had given them a mission.

Assault and destroy the Talon Company.

A rad-scorpion crawled slowly into view on a hill not thirty meters away. The Viper-Knights as some called them, now given a purple and green paint job, looked quite a strange sight out in the wastes.

The EPABS dwarf even the armor of the Brotherhood of Steel, and they were famous for their massive power armors. They out bulked even the most massive super mutants, and this kind of power and size gives the user a sense of immortality and invincibility. This was an illusion of course, a couple shots from a missile launcher and the battle suits would be battered and broken.

"C'mon, someone shoot it! Let's test out the accuracy on a REAL target this time eh?" wondered Phillis, who raised his assault rifle before anyone else could shoot at the large creature. He let off five rounds, one smacked into the scorpion's face armor, cracking it and no doubt rupturing its brain. Three others sliced through the beast's tail, green and purple juiced flying out the back of it. The other blew off a spider-like leg.

The creature lay in a pool of its own sickly green blood, dead.

"Woo-hoo!" shouted Artois, "That was some mighty fine shootin' Phillis."

"Thanks man, it was nothing really."

"Don't be so humble," boomed a powerful voice from nearby.

The General approached them, his massive form dwarfed by the battle suits. He was in the usual purple/green trenchcoat, but unlike the other ex-mercenaries he wore a huge purple top-hat with the corpse of a mutated viper curled around the brim. The man's skin was a very dark brown, and his eyes were a steely blue-gray color. No one had ever seen his hair, he always wore the hat.

The EPABSes went into an instant salute, standing tall and proud before their legendary leader. "As you all know, the assault on the Talon Company lays in the near future, and I want you ALL to be ready to fight, rend, tear and bash these bastards into a bloody pulp. Some of you may not come back alive, most probably will. When in battle, as the Talon Co. taught you all so many years ago, when in battle you must lose all emotion for the enemy. They are pigs, bastards, conniving scum that DESERVES to be killed."

General's short speech did the job, reinforcing their already metal resolve.

"General, it will be done, and if we fail, may none of us survive," said Karro, one of the more fanatical people of the bunch.

"That's the spirit! Now get back to shooting the country-side animals.. We need you in tip-top shape."

A week flew by like it was an hour, the excitement and anticipation making every single one of the warriors being sent to assault their ex-brethren feel like their heart was leaping out of their throats. Especially those that will be wearing the battle-suits.

They were like walking tanks, and it was said eventually they would leave a permanent mark on the Wasteland.

Phillis looked forward to ripping off limbs of his foes, unstoppable and invincible in the face of grenades, bullets, and missiles alike.

An illusion, of course, but he loved the feeling none the less. It was like being addicted to a drug it was, riding inside a behemoth, your fists the size of two watermelons, capable of ripping apart a rad-scorpion with ease.

This was the day of reckoning, the day they would assault the Talon Company.

Almost every single member of the Purple Vipers would participate in the attack, besides ten, and Murtel, who were holding down the base.

The fenced-in area of the Talon Co. was huge, at least four or five square miles, and it was right over the next hill.

Phillis felt like vomiting, but it was a good feeling, a feeling of immense power.
+++
The first figure peaked the crest, and Captain Carick gasped in awe, his soldiers dumbfounded at the massive bulk of the men approaching the merc.

The sun glinted off their purple and green armor, and struck fear and surprise into the hearts of the Talon Co.

They knew who the men were, and they knew what they were here for. The Purple Vipers had come for vengeance, as the Talon Co. knew they someday would, but not like.. This..

Captain Carick raised his minigun and shouted, "Stand strong, Talon Company! FIRE!"

Hundreds of bullets raced up the slope, but by the time they reached the Knights they were reduced to only a thousand feet per second, because of the hill.

They pinged off the huge, 10-centimeter thick armor that the Knights boasted, several missiles hitting the ground near them and barely leaving a scratch.
+++
Phillis laughed in pleasure as the pesky bullets panged off his massive size, him and his fellow knights began running, their mouths open in a massive warcry that only they could hear.

Several Viper snipers were set up along the ridge, and one got off a lucky shot, blowing off the head of a Talon Company wretch.

The Vipers along the slope opened suppressive fire to support their Knights, some scoring home but most just to keep the enemy's heads down.

"FOR THE GENERAL!" screamed Phillis, the first to the fence, tearing it apart with his massive energy fist.

Artois was next to him, and had ripped open his own little section of the fence, ducking through and coming face to face with the first Talon Company.

The modified ripper, or as the Knights called it, a chainsword, flashed down, ripping the unfortunate man to shreds and sending blood spattering on his nearby allies and Artois.

"Hahaha!" shouted Phillis, smashing a man to a pulp, and blasting another to oblivion with his assault rifle. The Knights were strangely nimble for ones in such cumbersome armor, sprinting between targets with a deadly ferocity and tearing men apart.

"Who's on top now!" screamed Karro, his chainsword cutting a man from collarbone to groin, and blew out another's cerebellum with a well aimed magnum shot.

Phillis kicked a man in between the legs, sending him five feet up into the air, blood flinging out of his mouth.

"This is too easy!" said Karro with a ferocious grin, slaying men left and right.

Captain Carick knew that they had spies and workforce amongst the Vipers, but he doubted it would be enough to stop this onslaught. He clicked on a small walkee-talkee and began to speak with the Talon Co. workers that were with the Vipers.

"What do you think you're doing! Shoot them sons of [censored]es while they think they're winning!" screamed the desperate Captain, half his men already dead.

"Sorry sir, we'll do that presently," came the return voice.

Nothing seemed to happen for a couple second, then, up on the ridge, five or so Vipers go to their full height and began to assassinate their "allies" execution style. The surprised Vipers were quick to strike back, but too many of them had already died.

That's when one of the Knights came into view, brandishing a chainsword and an energy pistol. "Bring it on you scrap heap!" shouted Carick as the Knight charged him. He threw the cumbersome minigun at it, smashing against its pauldron and doing nothing at all.
+++
"Hahah Captain Carick!" shouted Artois, lunging for the man with his chain-blade. He missed, and came dangerously close to tearing up his own armor with the powerful weapon. The Captain dodged the 2 and a half meter tall Knight, crashing into a wooden box after tossing his minigun at the Viper.

Artois shouldered the gun powerfully, snapping the barrel in two, and continued to run at Carick.

"Please, don't kill me.. PLEASE!" screamed the Captain, who soiled his pants.

"HAHAHAHAAH!" howled Melinguel, who had looked forward to this kill ever since the day he received the battle suit. The Captain was sitting, legs splayed out, up against a wall, several broken pieces of wood sticking into the man's sides and legs.

Artois dropped the energy gun, and gently grabbed the good Captain by the throat, dragging him up the wall until he was two feet off the floor. The Knight slowly inserted the ripper into the man's gut, tearing out part of his intestines, and bleeding furiously. "No guts, no glory."

He tossed the man lightly onto the ground, and left him to bleed out.

Artois looked back up the hill, and screamed in sorrow as he saw one of his closest friends being executed by what had looked like a fellow Viper. "NOOO!" he shouted, but it was too late.

His friend Frank's brains were blown out the other side of his head. "WHY?!" he screamed, going down on his knees.

What the Talon Company didn't know was that killing the Knights' comrades would only infuriate them to new levels of destruction and rage.

Edit: Thanks so much for commenting, Viva. Also, any suggestions from anybody on ideas for this story will be put to good use. And any criticism at all?
