Knock! Knock!

Post » Wed May 18, 2011 11:20 pm

While I was taking some comparison screenshots for my thread yesterday I came upon a few problems in Oblivion.

For a start when I entered the Fighter's Guild in Bruma I got locked in. I had to pick my way out for god sake!

I found it odd that I had to do this and it would have been much better if I could have asked the Porter there to
let me out.

I later thought that if it were the other way around, we could actually knock on the doors and be let inside; if
it wasn't too late or I had spoken to this person previously (they knew me). There has been a few scripted instances
where this has happened with past Bethesda games, (Oblivion, Fallout 3) but these were to do with quests.

What do you guys think about this? I think it would add an extra edge to NPC interactions and it shouldn't be to hard
to do with an AI package or something.

Edit: Also I just wouldn't walk into someones house if the door was unlocked. I would knock, otherwise I'd probably get funny looks.

I think it is a fine idea for when doors are locked.

Maybe if every house/building wasn't a separate cell. Unless you knock and just a voice answers you, like in that fallout quest on the bridge there, which could work fine I guess. I'd rather just sneak in and steal their stuff, then pop up when I'm done and act like Everythings normal, "oh hi!! Don't think anything of me appearing from behind your table hear, or that everything in your house is gone! Oh you want me to get out? See ya!! Hahaha!!". That's how I play it in my head atleast.

no. the presumption is that is what happens already. there is no animation or knocking audio. but the assumption is that when people would be fine with you coming in their house they leave the door unlocked and when its locked they want you out. so even if we had this redundant feature of knocking on a locked door we know the answer will logically be no. other wise why would the npc lock the door.

yeah, it would make sense in the perspective that this is what people do in real life. but this isn't real life and this only adds a little bit of realism at the cost of adding even more time you have to wait between loading screens and knocking. if not knocking is the miniscule level that breaks you immersion I can't say any thing that will make you feel any better.

and I want to make it clear, I am not attacking you or your idea (well maybe the idea) but I am not saying your opinion is not valid.

I would like it . It adds realism and makes sense. SOME PEOPLE might not like it but i do. Its not a magic show you just appear inside
without no one giving you permission to walk in. It makes sense if the door is locked(knock and ask to come in, the obvous answer would
be yes, unless it is locked) .If someone just walked into your house you would greet them with hostility "Why did you just walk in" "Why did
you not knock" "why did you not knock , steal all my stuff, why murder my husband in the basemant, and why did you walk in behind me.
It adds realism and realism is what Bethesda is trying to make.

Think about it this way though.

It's night time so there is less people around, less people that will hear a scream. You knock on the door of your "friends" house, they come down and let you in.
This is great because the lock is "very hard" and you can't unlock it yet because your skill is too low. You then subdue your fake friend and steal all the stuff in the
house of any value.

This would need to be balanced though, so that it takes quite a bit of time for someone to trust you like that. There could also be a perk that could make you more
charming so it is a little easier.

for me it would just make entering different cells that much annoying and fun killing. all this does is add realism. and bgs is not making a realistic game, if they were there would not be magic or dragons, they are making a game that is fun.

I'll accept that for some people knocking on doors is a thrilling part of a game, but don't hold your breath.

Don't give me the anti-realism thing. If you didn't want to knock fine, you could just barge in. They could just lower a bit of disposition if the NPC was home at the time. I'm sure there could be many ways they could make it work for various players.

Heck this would only be at nighttime mostly, if you read the AP. The rest of the day could have no knocking or a knock and then you open the door. It would take no more than a few seconds and could even disguise the loading. My point about the
fighters guild door locking was the most stupid thing. Why would you lock in a visitor?

Edit: Shops, bars and guilds would be exempt from knocking because they are public.

I like this idea. It would add more realism, and is much better than barging into people's homes.

hey, I respect that you like this Idea. I don't. I am not trying to shoot you down. maybe I was a bit confrontational when saying don't hold your breath.

but I will always speak against realism that I think svcks the fun out of a game. some people want it so that you can only carry 2 weapons because carrying several is not realistic. that just adds realsim that handicaps the fun of a specifc part of the game. the same with knocking, no matter at what time of day or night.

like I said, the presumption in how you enter buildings is that you did knock or the door was just left open, and if people don't want you in they would lock the door. like I said, it is more realistic for you to knock and for people to answer. but its completly uneccesary for the function of getting in and out of buildings and just adds complicity to such a narrow game play element.

and since I have frowned on this thread three times I think I won't any more, out of respect for the validity and your right to have your opinion just as I have my own.

Fair enough, but to be honest I never really entered houses that much in Oblivion, I was always at the shops buying/selling things. As I said there could be many ways it could be done as to not svck all the fun out of it. Maybe knocking twice and then entering without the NPC having to
come and open the door. There could be disposition benefits and your relationship could advance with them so they trust you more. This could lead to a lot of ways to exploit people. Imagine them trusting you enough and giving you a spare key. Big mistake!

I believe part of this was mentioned to be a feature back in February, although not to this extreme.
I believe it was mentioned that if you knew an npc well, they wouldn't call you a trespasser once you came into their house after hours.

Obviously this isn't as extreme as your suggestion, but seems like a more basic version that could have been built on now, or possibly for the next game

I made this same poll a couple months ago.

Except mine had 60+ Yes's and 0 No's.

.............But seriously, Bethesda, we need this. Can't stand going into an NPC's house late at night to finish a quest in which I saved their loved one, only to have them tell me to "GET OUT BEFORE I CALL THE GUARDS!".

Well heck lady if that's your attitude then the Dragon can keep your dam kid..........

I wouldn't mind seeing this implemented in a way. If the door is unlock I'd prefer you just enter like you did in Oblivion without any changes, but if its at night and the door is locked then you could choose to knock on the door, and depending on the NPCs disposition to you they might decide to unlock the door and let you in, where as in oblivion your only option is to leave or lock-pick the door.

I'd say this feature would actually fit in and work well with the other disposition dependent AI changes Bethesda is making in Skyrim.
