[REQ] Knocked unconscious

Post » Fri Jul 30, 2010 6:26 pm

Ok, so it's been many, many years since I last played Morrowind, but I'm finally getting back into it. One thing I didn't remember, is how easy it is to die in this game, at least early on. Another old game I've recently begun playing again, is Star Wars Galaxies. Why bring that up? One feature in SWG (at least for lower-level characters, not sure about high-level), is that when you run out of HP, you are simply knocked unconscious instead of dying. You lay on the ground - unable to move - for 10 seconds, while the enemy mobs lose interest in you. After "waking up", you have an effect placed on you for 45-50 seconds, and if you die again within that time frame, then it's a final "death" (obviously not completely final in SWG, given that it's an MMO).

I'm curious if something like that is even possible for Morrowind. I imagine it should be, but I'm not a modder, so I couldn't say for certain. I think - at least for starting characters - something like this would be extremely useful. I can't remember the number of times I've had to keep reloading on my starting character. While I suppose some might classify this as a cheat, I think it would simply enhance the game. That's just my opinion, however.

If something like this has already been done, I do apologize. I've been digging through TESNexus and PlanetElderScrolls, but there are a lot of mods to go through, and I obviously haven't looked at them all. If that is the case, however, I would appreciate just a simple link to that mod. Thank you.

Something like this sounds possible and interesting, but I think if you got knocked unconcious anywhere that was not in a town, the enemy would likely either start eating you or kill you for good measure anyway.

Well, my thinking is that - to the enemy - it would effectively be "feigning" death (with a 100% success rate). So as far as they're concerned, I am dead. They walk away, and I have at least a chance at getting away once I recover. Mind you, if I recover before they get a sufficient distance away, or if I get "killed" again before the 45-50 second timer (or maybe just a minute even, for good measure) was up, then it would be final, and I'd have to reload.

Not what you're describing at all but Fliggerty's http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=6536 is cool.

Well, like you said, it's not the same thing, but it definitely looks interesting. I'll take a look at it, thanks.

Gothic has a similar mechanic. When health reaches zero, you (or and NPC) are knocked out and vulnerable to being looted. After about 10 seconds or so, you get back to your feet. Health is still near-zero.

Given that we can save wherever and whenever we want, there's really little point to "dying" - rather, it is an irritant that disrupts game flow by forcing me to reload a game. A smaller in-game disruption (prone and defenseless for a bit) makes more sense. However, it can also be a bit unrealistic - why would bandits or Dagoth Ur stop attacking and wait for you to guzzle healing potions? Maybe auto teleport to a faction location or Azura shrine? Afterall, Azura doesn't want to loose her best bet at fulfilling that Nerevarine prophecy...

The system in my mind is about once you reached zero on your health/magicka/fatigue, it starts to eat from strength/intelligence/speed and after that your endurance maybe. This way there will be still a barrier but it will get you more and more weaker. Best of the both worlds. I explained it in my suggestions thread.

Just thought of one possible obstruction to this. If you get into a fight with the guards, and they think they've "killed" you, would that break anything? Or, would it basically act like you've managed to escape the guards?

Also curious if anyone is interested in taking this on. :)

Maybe there could be a script where the guards haul you off to jail.

I know nothing about scripting, but I do have lots of ideas. But, um, no scripting abilities, sorry. :(

That could work, assuming it could detect if it's a guard or a random NPC encounter. Once they knock you out, then they arrest you. Not a bad idea.

That's my problem, too. I can come up with plenty of great ideas, but no idea where to start in order to implement them.

I think the game has the ability to detect factions and/or class, right? I forget if guards are in a faction or if there is one or more "guard" classes.
