For the record, converting completely user made material from one game to another is fine (however if you want to release it, permissions of the original authors are necessary). It's just official stuff you must not touch.

A considerable number of the early modders ported their creations between games. As long as it's in it's entirely not made by Bethesda, there's no problem.

However if you intend to port something made by Bethesda... then run ;).

Well... you need to get permission from the modders who created the meshes in the first place. :P

... you probably still should get permission from the modders who created the meshes, even if you never intend to release the mod. It's unlikely that anyone here is going to give you carte blanche permission to freely modify someone else's work. :P

Well, modifying people's work for your own use is a bit of a grey area - some modders don't care so long as you don't release the modifications you make, while others will jump down your throat about it. My guess is that most won't care. But there is always one who might, if they find out. Better to be safe than sorry.

Does it really matter if he doesn't release it anyway? Take .esp mods for example. Would I really need to ask permission to tweak an aspect of the mod I didn't like, if I kept it to myself? I know creating meshes is something different but the idea is the same and the original modder wouldn't even know anyway if he kept it to himself.

The point is more principle than anything. Do you need to ask permission if no one will ever find out? That's something I can't answer. At that point it comes down to the individual making the change and their own conscience. A better question might be: Would the original modder approve of what I'm doing if they knew?

Look, they guy is just asking how to convert Morrowind meshes so that they can be used in Oblivion. This doesn't have anything to do with who owns these meshes, he's asking for a technique some of us know, and there's no problem at all in telling him this technique.

Just... imagine he made a Morrowind mesh himself, but forgot how he did that because he got washed up on a shore with no memories of his past life.
He has forgotten that Morrowind is much better than Oblivion, and now wants his mesh (which he found on a disc in his pocket) for Oblivion, his new favorite game. :)

Why can't you convert it? Surely you can do whatever you like with the copies of morrowind and oblivion you purchased as long as it's purely for your own consumption?

I don't just mean in priciniple, I mean that must be the legal situation.

The files aren't encrypted and any EULA is going to be worthless given that you are not purchasing a license.

If keeping it private there is usually not a problem (though I'm sure there are exceptions if posting screenshots and the origina maker sees it - so might want to at least send an E-mail to the addy posted in the readme of the original mod !)

To your question - the process really depends on the exact item (ie. statics, weapons, etc. are fairly easy - but clothing \ armor etc. get more complex as they require rerigging the item to the new skeleton and adjustments to get them to fit properly etc.). For a static item or weapon the easiest method is using NIfskope to export the model as an .obj and then import it into a similar item from OB. and make adjustments to the placement\size etc. as needed and possibly converting the textures to the proper .dds format with a normal map depending on the format of the original textures.

Why can't you convert it? Surely you can do whatever you like with the copies of morrowind and oblivion you purchased as long as it's purely for your own consumption?

The problem is that most companies including Beth - License cotent made by others with specific clauses in the agreement that makes it useable only for that specific game and as such if BETH allows modders to convert those object for other games of theirs then they open themselves up to litigation (and you know the individual would much more likely sue a company like Beth (who has deeper pockets) rather than go after the modder who may have nothing to go after !!) - SO BETH and most other companies whose games are moddable write in the user agreement that such things are not alowed and mod hosting sites also will not let those type of things be posted on their site for much the same reason !!

LAWL

Well I have no experience with importing stuff but I could imaging that you only need to load the model in a new version of NifScope and then saving again :D then go into CS and make a new static with the model on it ;P

NO. You do not own the resources in those games. What you own is the license to play those games, and (tacitly) to modify them to the extent of altering content that came with the game and adding content from sources that are not other games.

Nobody will break down your doors searching for illicitly modified copies of Oblivion. But you must never distribute any mod that contains resources from another game, and discussion of any such mod, any tool for extracting such resources from a game in a form that makes them usable in another, or any instruction in extracting resources from one game for use in another is not permitted on these forums. Any attempt to disparage the validity of copyright or EULAs may be treated as advocating piracy.

The OP's intended use is permitted, so long as he has the permission of the modders who created the works he is using. Other uses contemplated in this thread are not. The thread remains open for the sole topic raised by the OP.

Guys the whole discussion and ALL your comments are not helpful and absolutely zero constructive! He whants to know how to convert the meshen and not if it legal or if it grey zone. Of cource you may convert everything for your personal use!
According to what Dogsbody wrote above: Making modifications to any commercial game meshes and using them in Oblivion is, to put it succinctly, against Oblivion's EULA. Moving / exporting meshes between games, no matter if they those games were made by Bethesda or not, is illegal. Period. Even the discussion of how to convert commercial meshes between games is, if not strictly illegal, a bannable offense on these forums, as Dogsbody stated.

Even if people only convert user-made meshes from Morrowind to Oblivion or vice-versa, there is still the issue of the original author's permission. Maybe the original modder doesn't want their meshes imported into Oblivion or doesn't want them to be modified in any way. I know for a fact that many modders get incensed about their mods being put into mod compilations - while the situation may be different, the underlying issues are not: permissions. Unless the modder explicitly gives permission for people to convert / import their meshes / scripts / sounds into Oblivion, then the right thing to do is at least ask for permission before you do anything regarding someone else's work. Simply because individual modders don't have a team of lawyers backing them up is beside the point.

I don't know but if someone approached me and said "Hey, I think the gold rewards given in your mod are too small so I altered the mod to give me more gold." or "I did not like this NPC's face you added so I modified it for myself, I thought you should know" I would wonder why he is telling me this if he's keeping it to himself.

Just throwin' the link in. Probably a more fitting place to discuss this.

(My head would probably 'plode if people message me when they tinker with my mods. As long as they don't release it, and know they're doing it at their own risk, I don't exactly care. But that's just me .)

If I can state the rule in the simplest possible terms, it would be:

If you want to modify another person's mod, for personal use, you should ask permission. It's polite but not essential.

If you want to do so, for a mod you will or might release to anybody else, you must ask (and must receive) permission.

I've had to delete a lot of posts for arguing about questions other than this one. Rather than have to do so again, I'll close the thread now.
