Strangely enough, I think they are mutated Chameleons.

The Deathclaws were genetically engineered by the Federal Government to be a bioweapon for use against America's enemies. They were gene-spliced together from Jackson's Chameleons and several other unknown creatures. Not sure if FEV was used at all to create them though..

How did the government engineer this bio-experimenting when nuclear fallout was going on??

Why would they be more worried about Americas enemies then the survival of the country? Doesn't make sense.

They where probably doing this research during the actual War. when the bombs fell they escaped from whatever lab they where in and breed to a large population. That would be my guess.

I think this was before the nuclear weapons came down. Must have been hell on the Chinese. Or were the deathclaws ever deployed in actual combat?

The Deathclaws were created just before the war. AFAIK they were never deployed against the Chinese. And after the bombs fell many of them escaped to breed and become the Deathclaws we all know and love..

Now there's something Bethesda should have considered putting into the game for giggles, random creature mating scenes.

...or a Mirelurk orgy, with a King getting his groove on with a dozen or so little Mire-ladies.

Speaking of female mirelurks, there are kings but I've never seen a queen. Could the other mirelurks be females and only the kings are males?

Coming from the king's perspective, I hope not.

I have a question, the Deathclaws are the toughest thing that I have faced in the game yet. Are there enemies that are way tougher than them?

I can see this turning into, a Fallout creature porm thread, LOL.
You should check Youtube for video's of Deathclaw's vs Behemoth's, sometimes the Deathclaws win and sometimes the Behemoth's do.

Ive always thought that the Mirelurks are actually bi-pedal humanoid creatures under their shells similar to the Kings, with the kings being those that grow too large for their shells. Id imagine that the 'mating' always occurs at the shell level fully under the water.

probably not, just judging by the shape of the sheel and that most of their bodies appear to be the sam e shell material as the body shell. Has everyone forgotten about the quest with moira where you put a camera near one of the spawning pods?

Mirelurks are very tough if you can't hit them in the face

I beg to differ :P Whilst their torso is heavily armoured, even absorbing a point blank shotgun sneak critical on occasion, I find aiming at their legs puts them down quite efficiently, this technique is very effective with the lack of a face shot from behind. I don't know the actual statistics, but I'm going to safely assume that other parts of their anatomy are more vulnerable than the torso.

I don't like the idea of using a dart gun, never have, don't particularly ever want to. Deathclaws are terrifyingly powerful, and that's how I like them :)

I've actually watched a vid on youtube where the poster was using the console to pit a deathclaw against a behemoth. They fought several times, but I don't recall seeing the behemoth win a single fight. Simply put, the deathclaw and its attack were too fast for the behemoth to cope with. It always resulted in the deathclaw getting in the first shot which interrupted the behemoths attack.
