Known PC features

Thats why pc gaming generates more revenue than consoles do, and why the most profitable title is on the pc. Also why the PC has more exclusives every year.

PC gaming dieing since 1985.

I was gonna post this, but you did it for me :)

So is it gonna take a mega computer to run skyrim on its highest settings?

PC gaming is dying, too few of us have computers that can run top quality games nowadays.

As others have pointed out, that is very wrong. Plus the the GPU market is HUGE, with ATI and Nvidia making tons of money and pushing technology like crazy. Lots of people have computers that can play the top notch games, but they just play WoW and Farmville instead.

Honestly, the biggest issue with PC gaming is piracy and no DRM of any kind will stop a determined pirate or hacker.

It's too early to say for certain IMO, and it depends on whether there will be a DX11 option or not, but even the mid-range desktop graphics cards are pretty powerful these days.

Here are the recommended specs for a couple of upcoming 2011 games (obviously these are entirely different engines, the Skyrim specs could be quite different).

Dragon Age 2 - March 2011 (recommended specs)
CPU: Intel Quad Core 2.4 GHz Processor or equivalent
CPU: AMD Phenom II X3 Triple core 2.8 GHz or equivalent
RAM: 2GB (4 GB Vista and Windows 7)
Video: ATI 3850 512 MB or greater
Video: NVIDIA 8800GTS 512 MB or greater
DirectX 11: ATI 5850 or greater
DirectX 11: NVIDIA 460 or greater

The Witcher 2 - May 2011 (minimum specs)
----- Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2 GHz or similar AMD
----- Memory: 1 GB for XP / 2 GB for Vista
----- Graphics: Nvidia GF 8800 512 VR or similar AMD
----- Hard Drive: 8GB for game and 8GB bonus content

also, if it is within your budget, and you want to reduce your load times significantly, an SSD or hybrid drive can help. I don't think an SSD will help your gameplay; however, other than reducing interior/exterior loads and save game loads to almost nothing.

Probably not, even a PC built on a modest budget can play most of the best games out there on really high settings. People are under the strange delusion that it takes a super computer to play PC games...it is just NOT true. I can build a good one that can blast through most games for around $500-$700.

Yeah it's a shame, if the PC can handle extra visual effects they should be included in the graphic options menu.

Even if the game is ported from the console, PC versions always look better imo. I dunno, but the PC version of games I've compared always seem more vibrant, even though my 360 is connected via HDMI to my grandma's old black and white Tube TV.

Aside from mods, let's not forget that the PC version will most likely include some kind of manual configuration like an .ini, .xml or other form of tweaking file. Tweaking configuration files to your preference and hardware configuration can go a long way. There's probably also going to be the usual hires texture replacements for the PC.

Luckily I'm not buying my new PC exclusively to play Skyrim.

Same map size as Oblivion, no DX10/11...sorry to say that, but I think Bethesda is having a bit of tech slowdown...especially when there already are tons of games/engines that supports DX 9/10/11 at the same time.

i estimate pc gaming will "resurface" in two years- when the console graphics become dated and crossplay becomes more common (pc users will tell ps3 users that they haz mods).

then we will finaly get games supporting the lates dx / open gl that arent on the 360 as it doesnt have any ram

there are games around that support dx9/10 and 11. TES games are usually around for years so if they didn't put in the support for at least dx10 i will feel disappointed, because at least if it supports modern tech we can mod it in later.
The qote say that they are happy with 8 year old tech is disappointing though.

Anything mentioned yet about the UI for the PC version? A PC specific version of the UI i more important than the graphics imo, and required for the base game to be as good as the consoles. Otherwise it's worse. :(

well from the magazine and guesses from the quoted it looks like it "probably" will be similar to the console version. Though i hope it's not.

Especially having in mind DX10/11 technologies like Tessellation and Geometry Instancing 2.0, which a combination of both can render even entire armies without too much GPU effort.

It's the least they can do. Oblivion "designed-for-consoles" UI was both horrible and childish. Had to install DarkUId DaRN in order to have a decent UI.

They have mentioned in the past that they want to make a UI that doesn't disappoint PC users I thought?

LOL glad you discovered the wheel.

Since Oblivion TES has become s(biip)y console game, and it will remain there for a loooong time.

Only consolation for us is MODS.
So the best step is:
Dont buy when it launch, wait some time to modders to kick in then grab it low price , mod it to death and enjoy a good game.

You sadden me... Some how a console port is automatically bad even if it is an amazing game on the console. "Oh well it must be bad because it's not made for the pc." That's just.....I'm not even going to go on because then I would get in trouble for flaming. Also, how about not urging people not to buy the game? Just because you are making snap judgments on the game 10 months out doesn't mean you have to drag others with you. There is no definitive answer on whether it will use DX11 or not and for all we know the dev team might have extra time on their hands at the end of development and program in PC features. The fact of the matter is we don't know the extent of how Skyrim will be so people need to stop saying they don't need to upgrade their computers to max out the graphics and people definitely need to stop saying that the graphics aren't going to be up to Crysis level when no one has any idea what they truly look like on the PC with highest details yet.

Yeah I really couldn't care less that it's a port of a console game. I'm playing Mass Effect now and I'm enjoying it immensely. That it was originally an Xbox 360 game is pretty much no concern to me. Also I heard they changed the UI of that game quite a bit for PC users, so it's premature to make assumptions about Skyrim. Yes I know different companies made them, but it really doesn't make one bit of difference what platform it was designed for first.

No it is not more important wow what bugs me most is pc gamers that DONT KNOW about pc tech. a PC UI can be modded into the game quite easily DX11 support cannot that would be an engine modification.

The fact it's being made for the consoles as well automatically means if you have 4-6g of ram a 8800 nvidia or better and a basic quadcore (aka a 500-600 usd comp) your good to go. The thing is the developers have STATED that the games will look the same with the exception of resolution and AA so FROM that conclusion one can logically deduct dx11 will not be included in the game.

1: The game will look about the same on all platforms with the exception of resolution and AA
2: the consoles do not have dx11
3: then logically because the game must look the same on all platforms (ect rez/aa) the PC version will not have DX11 effects.

NOW there is hope that the engine itself supports DX11 for future development we could mod it in. If it does not well then the only thing we can really do is mod in textures and so on.

at first i never played vanilla oblivion i modded 50+ mods into the game (nothing balance breaking) then a few years later tried vanilla oblivion and it was horrible compared to the modded form the version i tried was also the 360 version....eww it hurt my eyes. JAGGIESZ!!!!

its not assumption its based on history, look at oblivion and fallout 3.
