Kotaku Changes Layout; Is Awful Now

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 4:58 am

http://kotaku.com/

Seriously, who at Kotaku thought this was a good idea?

Site looks like an Iphone app now and is a pain in the ass to navigate.

Guess should delete it from my favorites and replace it with Joystiq.

Ugh, I hate it when my favorite sites do this...

I think it looks good :) Organized, everytime Steam links me to Kotaku for game news I always thought the website was chaotic and annoying, looks much better now to me.

Normally I'd recommend just using their RSS feed from now on instead, but unfortunately Kotaku has so many spammy articles most people looking for news don't care about that even the RSS feed is hard to navigate through.

If you click the little newspaper looking icon on the right side of the Kotaku title, you can switch to blog view. This view makes it a bit easier, and more like it was originally.

Kotaku is the trashy tabloid paper of the gaming world. The quality of the website layout should reflect that.

Personally, I prefer this over how it was before. Like always, people will complain about change when it happens, and then forget about it completely a little while later.

Doesn't look too bad to me, even better when you hit that newspaper icon though.

I don't visit Kotaku that often though, so my opinion is null :P

I assumed that you guys would just say that's it's bad because it's changed, but then I looked at the site, and it is bad. I've never even been on Kotaku.

I love the new layout, it's so much easier to navigate than the old one. It's faster too.

EDIT: I don't really read Kotaku, but I read Lifehacker and they have the same layout.

Oh the melodrama that a website redesign can create.

Click the "Switch to Blog View" button at the top of the page, and get over it.

Wow, that was rude. I don't even go to Kotaku, ever. I went after reading this thread, and I don't like this layout. Guess I'm being totally unreasonable.

N4G.com Has made Kotaku nearly obsolete in terms of relevant information. If anything relevant does ever pop up on Kotaku, chances are you'll see it on the front page of N4G.

I use two-finger scroll on my touchpad to navigate up and down and the side bar keeps freezing up on me.

Same goes for www.i09.com, sadly, it is a great sci-fi blog owned by the same publisher.

They should really offer an option to view these blogs in their former layout.

My guess is they think it will make people click onto articles more instead of reading the blurb on the home page, thereby generating more ad revenue.

I just have trouble with scrolling the sidebar on my laptop. If they fix that then I can learn to live with it. Otherwise headed to Joystiq or VG247

EDIT: I don't really read Kotaku, but I read Lifehacker and they have the same layout.

That's because they are sister blog sites under Gawker Media... ignoring my opinion of Gawker Media in general (which to put it kindly isn't that high), they actually announced this change was coming up with a preview a while back, so it shouldn't have come as a big surprise (I don't even follow any Gawker blog that much, and still caught it since it was cross-posted on a blog aggregator)

Edit: looking at the design, there are really only two things I consider negatives:

1. The panel is on the right side, I don't like right-side panels when everything is center-aligned

2. Because everything is center-aligned, there is a LOT of whitespace, which is just a waste.

Basically the actual story should take up all the space of it currently + the panel and the panel should be flush to the edge of the browser on either side. I've never been a fan of sites that squeeze panels next to the text, even moreso for right-side panels.

Then again I'm not really a big follower of Gawker Media, so I guess the "old" way never grew on me

An adjustment was made to the layout for i09 and kotaku that seems to work much better.

As a sort of work-around, they enabled scrolling on the navigation bar via the up and down cursor.

Two-finger scrolling with the trackpad still freezes up, but if you press the up or down cursor while hovering over the navigation bar, the highlighted button shifts.
