[Relz] Kyoma's Journal Mod

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 7:26 pm

You mean your inventory/quest log/other menu? It's very strange indeed.

Yes, that's what I mean.

With the esp unchecked my mod cannot do anything (as it's simply not loaded) and the XML files won't behave any different. Very strange indeed. I'll need to think it through a bit.

It shouldn't matter, the only xml/interface my Journal Mod touches is the one for books and scrolls.

I know, it's very odd. I've even tried replacing the menu xml file for books as you recommended at one point, in this thread. Before and after doing this, made no difference. I still can't load the game, unless your Journal omod is activated.

I had a similar problem in that I have DarnUI & kyoma's journal mod (everything in omods), I deactivated the journal mod & then I would have a ctd whenever I tried to read a book or scroll. I recalled that I had gotten an overwrite message when I had installed the journal mod, so I figured the change hadn't reverted when I deactivated the journal omod. So, I deactivated my DarnUI omod & then reactivated it, & the problem was cured.

Yeah, thought of that earlier, and tried it, just like you. :D Sadly, it didn't work.

Kyoma, problem solved. The issue was your Journal omod plus the Wrye Bashed Patch. When the omod was removed but the WBP left in place, the game simply would crash back to the desktop within seconds of double-clicking on the load executable. I've been doing this from OBMM--so when I went into Wrye Bash to check things out and unchecked the Journal.ESP, Wrye automatically informed me that it was unchecking the WBP, as well. The game loaded fine, after that.

Daring all ;) , I rebuilt the WBP, then went into OBMM, and deactivated the Journal ESM. The game continued to load. So the issue appears to lie somewhere between your Journal mod and the WBP--and maybe Pluggy, as well. With all three deactivated, there are no problems. With just the WBP activated, no problems, either, provided it's rebuilt after Journal is removed..

Yea, that crash is easy to explain and very easy to fix. For next version it should clean up a bit better after itself. :embarrass:

Good to hear it's solved, but I'm very curious as to what exactly Wrye Bash is bashing into the Bashed Patch. The only thing I can think of would be if you had the DarNify Books option checked for the Bashed Patch, cause there are two (well they're just blank) books in the mod (only used for templates). I wonder if this is the case?

No, I didn't use DarNify Books. Wish I could say I did--that would make matters easier to understand.

I hope you can (or are wiling to) create a non-Pluggy Journal, Kyoma. It's a great mod that makes note-taking and alchemical formula-writing far more a matter of roleplaying than simply grabbing a realworld pen and writing stuff down. :)

Don't suppose you still have the Bashed Patch which crashed after deactivating the OMOD? If by some chance you do, would you be willing to send it to me? :)

About a non-Pluggy Journal, I am thinking about it. But it won't be doable until OBSE v17, then I have arrays without requiring Pluggy. It will take time to convert all the systems to the new arrays but it should be very possible. The only thing that will be removed (well disabled) when Pluggy isn't installed is the import/export stuff. Cause at this time, only Pluggy can do that.

Hi, I know this might sound a bit noobish but....

I'm having trouble getting the mod to work :(
I tried downloading both the OBS mods ect but all I get when i open oblivion is an empty book in my inventory named "Bookname" that I can't do anything with! I'm not too good with files so I'm really confused at what I did wrong :S
All three of the mods (the obs' and the journal mod) are checked in the data files box on the oblivion launcher so I don't know whats wrong >.< Can you help?? :D I really want to use it x).
Thanks a bunch.

If I had it, you'd get it. Unfortunately, I don't. :( I usually keep only one Bashed Patch around: the current one I'm using.

It's a shame, and I frankly wish Pluggy were without problems, when one considers all the work that recreating some mods will entail. Yours is one I really want, and I mean that; but the alternative for me is using a DLL that crashes my system on a regular basis.

Did you follow exactly the instructions in Kyoma's readme file?

* Copy the esp file, the textures, meshes and menus folders to your data folder. This mod requires:
- OBSE v0016. You can find the latest version at http://obse.silverlock.org/.
- OBSE plugin Pluggy version 122. You can find the latest version at http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/Category%3a%50luggy.
* Copy and rename the appropriate "book_menu (xx).xml" file to "menus\book_menu.xml". If you are unsure which one the use, pick the vanilla one. There is a file for the following UI mods
- Vanilla UI or BTmod (same file)
- DarkUI by DarkbBirdy
- DarnifiedUI by DarN
- DarkUI'd DarN by Gothic251
- Phinix Immersive DarkUI
- You can configure the added menus and buttons in the "menus\prefabs\journal\generic_config.xml". By default it will match a vanilla or DarnUI look.
* The default ini file will be created when you first start this mod, nothing else needed.

hi!

At first, please excuse my english, there may be some mistakes in the text...

I've loaded this PlugIn a few days ago and it worked greatly. Well done! But now I've got a problem: unluckily I forgotten at one time to start the game with the obse_loader. As I noticed that, I've already played for a long time. Of course there was nojournal anymore, so I closed the game and restarted, but that didn't bring the journal back. The "+ [Menu Journal]" still exists, but my real book is lost. In my older savegames even the journal still exists -of course- but I don't want to play this interval again, to get my journal back. So I want to create a new book and import the already written text from the .txt-file (which also still exists), but how should I do? In the ReadMe is written I should open the menu journal, click on "More features" and then click on "Journal Books", but if I do so, nothing happens. There's no button like "Create Journal Book", the menu journal just closes itself.

I hope you can help me,
Erec

I cannot say for sure what happens when a game is saved for a while without OBSE and then re-adding it. So I have no idea why it's not working but I recomment you try making a clean save. If the problem persists then I'll need to look into it.

I'm not sure whether I really understood what you mean, but if you wanted to say that I should save in OBSE-modus but without your PlugIn and than reactivate the PlugIn and restart the game with OBSE and load this save, you told me the right solution.:)
Now a new journal was created automatically, I just have to import the old files.
Thanks.

Erm... one question again: how could I import text? If I write some text in the game I can read it in the .txt-file, but if I change the .txt-file the new text isn't readable in the game; the book is just empty...

Update news....

Some of you may know that I've recently began playing Oblivion again (Yeee! FCOM!) but I haven't forgotten about this mod. The next version is almost ready, nothing major added, just a few bug fixes with importing some text files. Something else that might take a little longer is that I'm rewriting the readme. Hopefully it will be a bit easier to understand and less bulky. And there will be an ingame equivalent of the readme. :)

How did you import the text file? What kind of message did it give you when you imported it (shows the filepath of the txt file that was to be imported and some other stuff)? And was it an entry in the menu journal or was it a journal book?

To import manually, make sure you're in the book itself.

Took me forever to figure that one out XD

Woops, yea. You gotta be viewing the book when you try to import it. And not while you're writing in it. I should probably add that to the new readme. :read:

If you could use any help with making that readme, don't hesitate to PM me. I'm very good at that sort of thing, and yours is an excellent mod that it would be a privilege to assist with--in any way. :)

hey kyoma,
can another esp automatically add entries to your journal using RunScriptLine?

e.g.:
an auto-journal mod.
changes to stats (e.g. quests completed, number of pickpockets, number of kills, etc...) are tracked.
other data is also accumulated.

and every time the player opens the journal or entered/exited a city, this data is dumped with an intro like: "13 march 2009: arrived at cheydinhal."
and the data added would look something like "completed 3 quests, killed 5 more people, commited 4 more assaults, acquired 1 new quest from ."

also, leaving a city will add something like: "14 march 2009: leaving cheydinhal"

if this is possible, these stats would free the player from adding mundane but still interesting information.
also information like these would put the player's manual entries into some form of context.
it should encourage true journal entries like: "that guy from the copious coinpurse is actually not too bad. not sure why the other merchants are fussing about him."

(or do you already have an auto-journal feature?)

my confession: i have yet to try your mod and i just quickly scanned through this thread's first post. so all this may be moot.
i've just downloaded it now. ;)

Currently, there isn't a nice and clean way for a third-party mod to add entries. I suppose it could be done in the current version but it'll be alot more difficult than how I can make it. So.....consider it added for the next version. :)

Something about how it might look: a third-party mod will probably only need to specify two strings. One for the actual entry and the other for the title (although the title can be left out). For now I'll just add it for the Menu Journal since adding stuff in books is a little more complicated.

P.S. About 'true journal entries', now might be a good time to announce something I've been planning to do for a while now. And that is: a Topic Logger! :) It will keep track of all the things people said to you (except maybe conversations, will need to look at it first) in a nice organized and alphabetical list. Mostly a scripting resource cause I won't add stuff to actually display and review the info. Too much trouble to come up with a suitable interface. :P

The best thing that happened to this mod since OBSE 16 : http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=965181. Solves the problem of complexity and a muddled readMe.

News Update! :read:

As some might have seen, OBSE v17 is in beta. And that means I can now finally make this mod Pluggy-optional. If you got Pluggy installed, you get all the text file features, else they are disabled. From a user's point of view there won't be much different.

I have no idea how long it will take for me to adapt all the scripts to using OBSE arrays instead of Pluggy arrays. First I'll need to get accustomed to the new super-powerful stuff from OBSE v17, then I'll need to update the scripts and finally test them. It may take me 'only two weeks' but it could just aswell take me two months (god I hope not <_<).

But that's not all, I've had a new minor update ready for a while now. It had a few bugfixes with regards to importing text files. I keep postponing the release with the reason that I wanted to 'test it more'. If I get the idea that the Pluggy-optional update will take longer then I'll release a small update in between.

Excellent, thank you kyoma? Are you still going to include your readme within the journal or will you put it in Wrye's guidebook?
