Lack of Daedra in 4E 201?

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 6:49 pm

In Skyrim, there is a distinct lack of Daedric creatures. Is there a bit of lore to back this up, such as Martin's sacrifice/apotheosis closing most of the pathways from Oblivion? Or is this more of a game design decision, such as not focusing on the Daedra because they aren't relevant at all to the Main Quest?

I was thinking about it being the former, but it doesn't make much sense when you consider that Sheogorath opened a door to his madhouse in the middle of Lake Nibenay and the whole Umbriel event (which I have yet to read). Am I missing something? Or, perhaps, am I reading too much into it?

It's half gameplay, half lore. The doors to oblivion are sealed, but Daedra can still get in if they're invited (ie summoned) I imagine the lack of scamps etc. Has to do with creator fatigue (there were a looooot of Daedra in oblivion)

I'd like to think the reason is something lore related but it seems far more likely that it was simply a design decision. We may see some more daedric creatures with DLC, however but it doesn't seem likely

Where would they be? They showed up inside Oblivion in OB, and in temples to the Daedra in MW. In Skyrim, there really isn't much place for them. For what it's worth, they show up in Dagon's shrine.

I have seen some Fire Atronachs in the wild before, but I haven't seen any Frosties or Stormies in the wild. Similarly, I've only seen Dremora at Dagon's shrine and in Azura's star.

Occasionally, traders will also have a stock of Daedra hearts for sale. I'd say that some Dremora (or other Daedric creatures that supply hearts) exist somewhere in Tamriel.

Atronachs and Dremora are the most common types of Daedra; they've been around since Daggerfall.

the sealing of Oblivion had nothing to do with the lack of Daedra, there was always a pact that stopped them from coming in mass, the Mythic Dawnies circumvented that Pack, and AkaMartin resealed it again and Banished Dagon. they can still appear as frequently as they did before then 200 years later nothing in that regard change, Its more of a design descision than a lore reason why The Variety is so meek.

They also just showed up in the harsher parts of the wilderness in MW once you got to higher levels, especially things like ogrim and daedroths.

They are there, just rarer, which makes sense to me. Like people have said, deadric temples aren't in Skyrim, and the Oblivion gates are closed. Magic is shunned by the Nords so not a lot of people practice it, and of those who do they will sometimes summon Daedra, but not often. I do prefer it from Oblivion's daedra everywhere scene, it's a nice break to have some more organic enemies (people, wolves, sabre tooth cats, giants, mammoths, dragons etc).

There's just no need for them. This game is about dragons, mountains, and snow. Creatures like wolves, mammoths, and frost trolls fit the setting much more than scamps and hungers.

At first I thought I would be disappointed by this episodes "low fantasy" approach compared to the outlandish morrowind, but it works very well IMO. I think we'll get something crazier as a dlc, like what shivering isles was to oblivion.

I definitely feel the lack of Daedra was a conscious choice. First to reflect the loss of knowledge on how to summon them permanently (or even temporarily), second to reflect the end of Oblivion, and third and foremost, because the last game was chock full of Daedra (I count 11 varieties of lesser Daedra) and they wanted to create a stylistic break with the last game.

There is no lack of knowledge to summon them temporarily. I believe the limited number of summonable daedroth has more to do with wanting to fit summons down a split feat track and a greater focus on elemental damage overall.

They also could have easily imported the old models from Oblivion into the new game with only marginal updates - reusing old resources is actually much cheaper than creating new ones, so there is little reason that Bethesda could not have simply jury-rigged the story to have plenty of the same daedra we saw in Oblivion with minor changes if they were just trying to cut corners.

Rather, this was clearly a deliberate choice on the part of Bethesda to draw focus away from daedra and towards things more specific to the lands of Skyrim.

Many considerations to the fewer number of Daedra in Skyrim. The events of Oblivion meant that Daedra were obviously going to be a major element of gameplay and story.

It's to be expected that in Morrowind, a land populated with Daedric ruins, with a history of Daedra worship, that Daedra find it easier to come and stay longer.

It's kind of lousy, yeah. And then we get things like familiars. The hell are they supposed to be? Ghosts? Some kind of impromptu Flesh Atronach made of ectoplasm? (actually, I kind of like the sound of that)

But I have a feeling they'll include certain iconic creatures like Daedroths and Scamps (and Dreughs for that matter!) in DLC. And probably make a big deal about it, too.

Spoiler
Well, I found a place called "The Chill" that contained nothing but some empty cages and a frost atronach. When I left, I got ambushed by three of them. It was in the middle of no where (or more accurately the top of nowhere), on a small ice floe north of Septimus Signus' place.

It is a choice I believe. And a bad one imo. Daedra are great for this game and I cannot think of one legitimate reason they would not be included other than a Stylistic break from the previous game, and that reason seems fairly weak to me. Even if they are not relevant to the main quest they could easily have been relevant to the game or even made the Daedric quests into an entire set of mini quest-lines. 2-3 quests with lots of Daedra and new artifacts at the end. I love some of the new Daedric Artifacts though. Dawnbreaker is my favorite. Ebony Mail is awesome this time around. Lol I am the light in the Darkness, Dawnbreaker+Ebonymail.

I want to know how Dragons and Daedra interacted or if they ever did so. So much more could have been done. All they had to do was slightly update the textures and models of the Daedra from Oblivion and they would have been fine. Laziness is not the cause. I am pretty sure that would not have been THAT much more work for whichever design team would have been doing it. Work sure. Just not an unreasonable amount.

I imagine any daedra summoned or bound to Nirn during the time dragons dominated, would be basically waiting for their next swim in the water's of oblivion. I'm sure Dragon's would have thought themselves above the lesser daedra.

Well we have no evidence that they did interact afaik. I may not have seen something. It is a huge game. But I would think they would use the Daedra just as they used the Humans, who they felt were beneath them as well. So if they consider themselves better than the lesser daedra and they feel the same way about men why not use the Daedra just like they use the Humans? A resources is a resource.

There could have been so much cool stuff. Winged Twilights battling Dragons in the skies. Dremora Lords tearing them from the sky with magic. Dragons shouting them to pieces. Clannfears swarming them when they are too weak to stay in the air. Would have been cool but too reminiscent of Oblivion I think. Oblivion had 3 major quest-lines all dealing with Daedra. Daedra Prince invading Tamriel. Half-Daedric Demi-god Ayleid sorceror King desecrating the Nine Divines altars. Becoming a Daedric Prince...Frankly I think they were just trying to get away from that. They were too dependent on it. Still I love Daedra and am fairly disappointed in the lack of variety.

Although cool to think about, it would either require Daedra being present on Nirn en masse, or Dragons for some reason attacking a Daedric Realm ? Or secret option Number three, have one thousand human conjurers conjure one thousand Daedra :vaultboy:

I was thinking number three. Us summoning a couple Daedra and they battle out with the Dragons. Of course we CAN summon a dragon. Or so I have heard. Have not got that far yet. I am avoiding the main questline. I am at the find the important parchment part.

Well Martin, sealed the gates to Oblivion so they can only come if summoned. I find pretty much every Necromancer and enemy Mage summons one to fight me.

The only reason they were more present in Oblivion was because the entire main quest focused on them.

They can still be bound to Nirn until they are killed and sent back to be reborn in the waters of Oblivion. Otherwise...why were their still wandering Daedra in Oblivion? How did Ulmaril keep the Aurarons bound if you played KoTN after you beat the main quest? Or why did the Daedra in that game not all disappear from Nirn after. Or why do we have Atronachs and Dremora in Skyrim that were not summoned by anyone?

Because Martin made it so Daedra cannot come to Nirn in large numbers like Oblivion gates. They can still be bound to Nirn in small numbers.

Not so much summoning like atronachs, but more like calling his cellphone and asking for help. Except "calling his cellphone" = dragon-shouting his name.

So what's the deal with the giant door to the Shivering Isles? And Umbriel? I hear Umbriel was actually floating around Tamriel in an 'Oblivion bubble,' but how do you get a stable door to the madhouse open? You would think that, if Sheogorath ever got the crazy idea in his head to invade, he very easily could, if he wasn't so preoccupied with the Greymarch, And the Greymarch! You have an army of Daedra going around "organizing" the madhouse, what if they were to see the giant gateway to the (not quite as chaotic) Mundus?

Granted, it was only one door out in the middle of a lake. However, you still could send skirmisher squads through.

Sheogorath's portal was an invitation. Mortals go in, mortals go out, Daedra stay put. So no, no one could send skirmisher squads through, that portal was mortal only.

That's how I see it, too. Both, Mehrunes Dagon and Sheogorath, stayed true to the contract: No visiting Nirn without a summon by mortals. Dagon was summoned, Sheogorath not. That's why the latter had to wait for someone to come.
