Lack of News and "Confirmed details".

Post » Fri Jan 01, 2010 10:25 am

I've been a sometimes-lurker sometimes-poster on the forums for 3 games now. One thing I've learned about gaming communities (and Bethesda in particular) is that the developer is ALWAYS damned if they do and damned if they don't. In a situation where the dominant voices of the community will be pissed off anyway, why blow all the surprises? What generally happens is that Todd (or whoever) will release a detail, however benign, and the community will immediately commence either Operation Fill Diaper or Operation Grandiose Assumption.

For the developer, its just not worth it to release too much detail.

At least it's not Fable 3.

I was about to say.

There is only a set amount of information that they can release without ruining the game when it actually comes. They control the release of information through the period between announcement and release to maximise excitement building up to the release date because there is no point in giving away every detail straight away meaning people are bored of it by the end.

I don't think that's a bad thing though. It just goes to show how awesome everyone wants the game to be. We all know we'll (more than likely, unless something majorly horrible happens) buy it. So do the devs.

I do agree that the interviews haven't been good but we still have another 185 days until Skyrim comes out. (Yes I'm tracking the amount of days because it's that (censored) good).

Who knows the next interview could drop a bombshell like. "Just confirmed Todd said that Horses have made it into the game and there will be Horse Armor in the Game that you can buy for your Horse".

What worries me, is that sometihng similar happened with OB as far as I remember. A lot of speculation and in the end it turned out that a lot of stuff they hadn't bother to mention had actually gotten a downgrade from the last game. I just dont wanna launch up Skyrim and see that we now only have 4 gear slots and there is no way to incrase your speed and jumping abilities.

Meh... I don't know. I think it is a bad thing if the community is up in arms over details they haven't experienced yet. In the months before the launch of Oblivion, starting a thread with even the minutest bit of optimism was considered flame bait. The dominant feeling in the community was that the game svcked already. In fairness, I didn't end up enjoying Oblivion, but it was for reasons entirely different than what the community was up in arms about.

How does that happen? A reporter sneaks a camera in?

Lawl, you'd think they'd just let it be open if it's going to leak.

The Oblivion walkthrough was officially released by Bethesda. It was just after E3 I think.

If not mistaken that's how it was for OB too. Beth showed their game demo in a separate hotel later in the evening. They didn't do a live demo at like M$ or Sony's conference if that what some of you are expecting. They later released video footage of the same demo with commentary afterwards.

What did they do with Fallout 3? I just went back and checked the gameplay video and it is dated July 2008. E3 was is July that year, so Beth released the demo footage right away to the public?

Battlefield 3 will be released around the same time. There is less info on BF3 than for Skyrim.

On the Making Of Oblivion video they were really worried about being ready for the demo and they showed it at some kind of conference to a large audience.

I think we've gotten a good amount of info so far and there'll obviously be released more before 11.11.11. Just have a little patience... Though i'll admit,
I got a little dissapointed when I heard there would be no E3 live demo. But oh well, you can't always get what you want.

It makes sense for them not to be releasing much information right now. I'm sure we will hear much more after E3.
I'll admit it is kind of frustrating, but isn't that the point? Give is small amounts of information, to keep us interested?

I only found out about Oblivion about a month before it was released, so I had loads of information about the game! It kind of makes me wish that I hadn't heard about Skyrim for another month or so!

I'm mostly annoyed that all magazines and articles and whatnot just pretty much release the same info over and over again and again, just in different words.

Then again, Bethesda wants to spoil the game as little as possible and make all the total available info last as long as possible... so I don't blame them.
