Lack of Unenchanted Robes

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 5:10 pm

Has anyone noticed that this game has a serious lack of unenchanted robes? It's really started to bother me. I'm level 38 and so far I've found maybe 4 or 5 unenchanted robes, and 2 of those forced a hood, limiting enchantment slots. I haven't found any matching hoods for the other 3 robes I've found, which is sort of lame.

Really, some of the enchanted robes look really cool, but there aren't any standard versions of these you can find in the game. I can't even find a decent amount of unenchanted robes for sale in any cities, and have yet to find a single hood for sale. Is it just me or is there a definite lack of robes in this game?

Half the benefit of enchanting is not being stuck with robes. If you enchant, you pretty much should be sticking that on armor.

However, most general goods trader will have unenchanted robes for sale.

It's not just you.

You can use console commands to give you some unenchanted robes, look up the item codes in the wiki, but other than that I don't think it's possible to get "clean" version of the robes you normally find enchanted.

And the lack of cowls/hoods if horrible. Just....horrible. Simply inexcusably godawful.

For example the hood that comes with the 'hooded' version of the blue or black robes: impossible to get as it's own item. Even with the console, AFAIK. Jesus.

Pretty sure the clothing store in Solitude sells unenchanted mage robes.

That's the place where I found the unenchanted robes. They had College Robes, some tan robes (forget the name), and Ragged Robes. No hoods.

Did you try that one clothing trader that is real snooty? She has one of every clothing item in the game, at least the generic ones.

There are unenchanted Blue Robes in the alchemist store in Solitude. I don't know if they respawn. If you do the ladies quest you can take it without stealing.

Well, you see, they wanted to make a game that brought back the good old days of Morrowind, so obviously they had to make a system where an enchanter in heavy armor is a better mage than someone who wears robes and has high spellcasting skills...

Just checked. If she really has all of the generic clothing items in the game, then there's only 5 different robes to pick from:
-Black Robes
-Blue Robes
-Monk Robes
-College Robes
-Ragged Robes.

And no matching hoods...

I'll tell you a secret.... Bethesda does not care about mages.

Because clearly enchanting is something a mage does for everybody except himself.
Making armor not* effect spellcasting was a stupid decision, mages should have a reason to wear robes that isn't aesthetic.

*I know that it may technically do something, but it's so negligible that I have not noticed an effect.

Robes were useless in Oblivion, but at least we had a decent variety of them. Going unarmored in Skyrim can be slightly useful, but there's barely any variety of robes, and most of the better looking ones restrict your enchantment slots. I can't for the life of me figured out why Bethesda chose to make half of the robes cover both your head and body slots.

Yup, not being able to wear a circlet and a hooded robe at the same time is asinine.

Gotta work them dragon priest masks, I'm level 40 now and I've been wearing the Archmage's robes and I switched out Morokeii for the other mask that does +50 Magicka and 20% cheaper destro and resto, since like level 15ish, kinda gets dull.

I hate how screwy hoods are in this game. Was the bug with Arch-Mage's robes and the Dragon Priest masks ever fixed? I haven't played my mage since I got both, since each one is too good for him to pass on wearing, but wearing them both means my mage's head completely vanishes and I'm stuck wearing archmage hood. Stupid as hell how you can't wear hoods outside of their accompanying robes and how you can't wear other head items with a hooded robe.

Speaking of matching.. I hate the fact that matching your armor/robes to a dragon priest mask is often times.. yeah. Haven't got it yet.. Thief wears the Krosis and my NG armor from the quest-line does not match due to the brown part of the mask, drives me nuts. Same goes with Rahgot on my heavy armor melee.

On a similar note, this game has even worse clipping than Oblivion. It seems the hoods in this game clip extremely bad with almost any armor piece, and even with some clothing and robes. Bethesda said they merged the armor slots to reduce clipping, but it's honestly worse than it ever was before. The Elven armor even clips with itself... that's just bad design.

Just get a hoodless robe and a circlet.

Black robes don't have hoods.

Problem solved.

Hoods look mysterious and cool. There should be matching hoods to go with most of the robes. Even if you do wear a circlet, you're stuck choosing between 4 or 5 different robes if you want to enchant.

I bought an unenchanted hood from one of the mages at the mage's university, but I don't remember which one it was. I haven't noticed any others, but I haven't been looking.

@Effe: Yeah.. I loved when my Orc was wearing full Orcish armor and his two hander was always in his back plate. Things like that do bug me. He is wearing Daedric armor now. (almost done) I rushed BS to make him weaker which is funny (because he levels without combat skills) and his back-story being a gifted/genius blacksmith blah blah. Just crafting this beautiful armor then going derp makes me sad.

@Adebar: That sounds like personal preference to me as most of this thread is. I hate circlets. Feels too hoity toity to me.

Isn't it too cold in Skyrim for robes? That's probably why they are so scarce.
