Ladders Are In!

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 11:30 pm

If that ladder is functional it probably acts like any other loading door, I'm not expecting climbing from NPCs. I admire your optimism though. :)

Hehe thanks. :)

I know I know, its a minor detail really - the only reason I'm making such a fuss about it is because Todd Howard made such a fuss about not being able to get them right, and I would love to see them overcome the challenge.

In truth there isn't enough evidence to say one way or the other, but it would be cool. :)

Without wild speculation as to what will come, this pre-release delay would be crazy-horrible!

Teleporting ladders is awful. I mean... it's 2011, not 2003... so come on. If there are ladders, it would be really embarrassing if it's "click on ladder + loading screen + spawn somewhere else".

Think SI had a ladder in a dungeon who teleported you to the top, it was not a load door just a teleport four meter up and one forward.

See one problem animating it, character legs has different length. You would also have to add climbing animation to all humanoid monsters.

Yes, but that requires 2 ladders, as doors can teleport to each other, but not themselves. Whereas the ladder in the video is a single ladder, not a series connected to a wall in sequence to appear as one.

There's no "problem" animating it.
There's just work need to be done. Like with everything else.

If every game saw work needing to be done as a problem, we'd all still play games with the simplicity of a Mario-game. To not ask for something as simple as ladders or such, is like... eh. Where are your standards? I repeat: this is 2011 not 2003.

Is this a good time to propose that we use green pipes to teleport in Skyrim?

Little link climbed , then went to the temple of time and got all big and grown up, then climbed the same ladders no problem, back in 1998.

TES is in desperate need of some hot ladder action.

...wait, what?

You mean like Jackie Chan ladder action or...?

Aren't Arkane Studios now part of Bethesda Game Studios, or something like that? And didn't they make Dark Messiah of Might & Magic? And... wasn't it mentioned that they helped out with creating more realistic combat?

I'm genuinely not sure about all that, but if it's true... well, Dark Messiah had all the gameplay I'd ever want from a TES game (that game's gameplay was freaking perfect), including ropes and ladders. So here's hoping that they'll be able to use their experience in that area for Skyrim.

um, yea?

The only really neat thing I could see coming out of this is having NPC's carry cumbersome ladders (or how about rope arrows) to climb and finally reach a perched perpatrator

Laurel and Hardy? Keystone Cops? Three Stooges?

yeah i know a ladder will help you reach high places and it hints at climbing but still :/ we need something that will hold us through this info drought until e3 (which undoubtedly will show new info)

They did actually almost outright confirm no climbing, so I wouldn't expect it here, but the ladder thing is progress, so I'm crossing my fingers it will feature in the following game, and as a skill.

I think it would be badass to see an NPC climbing a ladder, wait until he/she/it's about half-way up...

Then - Arrow in the Back! It would be epic if NPCs could fall Off ladders.

But now I'm getting ahead of my already over-optimistic speculation. :P

We have AI climbing ladders in Arma2 (that sometimes suffer animation problems like falling off when reaching top), but there we have massive problems with AI and bridges. Each engine and game has it's own quirks. It's mostly related to engine limitations, AI decision making and path finding processes. I've seen a few of the AI decision making flowcharts in Arma2 (uses FSMs, Finite State Machine like scripting, greatly enhances visualization of the process), and it's pretty complex stuff that is way easy to mess up. FSM Deadlocks anyone? What a nightmare, lol :D Making something work may break the conditions for something else working. If you can go A-B using a climbing U-turn or a ladder, how do you determine what to use?

Yeah would be nice to have, but won't be crying too hard if it's skipped due difficulties implementing it.

i find the "ladder" issue hysterical. going all the way back to 1995 half life had ladders that worked. for some reason this is bethesdas achilles heel........ladders. i cant think of a recent shooter that didnt have ladders i could climb and many games have ladders that npcs can climb as well. why this is such an issue with them is hilarious, and a bit curious.

Yes come on I want ladders and rope ladders to make npcs climb and when they're half way bang! I kick the ladder to fall haha or cut the rope that would be funny especially to climb the ladder to the roof when a guard is chasing me and then pull up the ladder.

Really, I dont see why its so hard. Every other game on the market has done ladders already, I dont understand why they cant just copy someone else if it really came down to it. With the new animation software they should have no trouble.

If no real animation for ladders are being done, these are the reasons as I see it:

1) They are lazy.

2) They don't care (in other words, they don't find it important).

3) They have very bad knowledge about doing animations.

Why do people care about ladders so much?

Because its honestly a shame that, even in 2006, Bethesda couldn't make good, working ladders when other games had them long before 1996.

Wow. Ladders are a hot topic. We really need some new Skyrim info from Bethesda right about now.

There is an Oblivion ladder mod, but no climbing animation. you just sort of 'air walk' up and down.

What about ropes, if ladders are hard to make maybe ropes like in Thief? If spiders can use their silk to slide down from the cave ceiling, I should be able too...it's not fair!

I like ropes too. The Thieves Arsenal mod at least had the 'climbing vine arrow.
and, I also hope spider silk can be harvested for something like rope or traps.

if we have good working ladders ,we also need slides (chutes) :)
