Ladders!

Post » Fri Nov 20, 2009 9:13 am

Do you want ladders? It's a bit of a minor feature but it has never been in a TES game I think (I don't know if it was in Daggerfall, but that had climbing so yeah). And I mean ladders you can actually climb. Like in real-time... So do you want Real-Time ladders?! :D

Are you kidding me? Bethesda R&D cannot understand ladders.

But I voted yeah.

I'd like to see at least one ladder, just to see that they got it to work. Would be cool.

It wouldn't matter to me if we had ladders. I would rather have levitation though.

That would add a cool new aspect to thief characters.

Depends on how well it's implemented, it's likely to cause some issues with NPC navigation.

But if they DO have ladders, they can add even more immersion! Like your neighbor fixing his roof, or someone going for that double decker bed

I can already picture myself climbing up a ladder in a crowded city, shooting fireballs at random people, and kicking Skyrim guards who are climbing onto the ladder one by one in the face...

I already demanded rope in the previous ladders thread.

But, y'know, whatever.

Yes, please. And arrows with attached ropes that I can shoot into ceilings or side of structures so I can climb to places otherwise inaccesible (unless levitation comes back)

Good heavens, YES! It would increase the world size by adding more areas in the vertical axis. In other words: layers!

Look to Mirror's Edge for climbing ladders and parkour in first person. It can be done! It should be done!

I don't really care myself.

If having ladders messes with AI pathfinding abilities though, then I say leave it out.

Besides, who needs ladders in a world that has levitation spells? (Well, assuming they bring back levitation in Skyrim)

Yes! Especially as whatever mechanic was implemented to enable ladder use, could presumably apply equally to other climbable surfaces (vine-covered walls, ropes, etc), which would really make exploring a lot more dynamic.

Gothic 1 managed to have okay AI path finding for ladders (and they had NPC schedules, too!). No, it wasn't perfect. But it did work about 80% of the time.

I think various ways to explore the Z axis would be ideal. Maybe separate skills for each different type of character. For example, mages would use levitate, thieves would maybe use grappling hooks or rope arrows (maybe acrobatic climbing), strength based characters would take a brute force approach to climbing (scaling a mountain with two picks/weapons etc.) and of course ladders could be used by anyone.

Definitely want ladders that are able to be climbed. Many games have this feature and millions of gamers enjoy this feature. And for the fifth game in the series, I'd say it's about time to catch up with the rest of the industry.

It just occured to me that the BGS Forums is probably the only place where you could find a thread dedicated solely to ladders. Oh, well.

Anyway, yes. Add ladders. Add several. I want a whole house full of nothing but ladders (and seriously, if Beth finally manage to implement those pesky things, they should make a house like that, just as a hidden easter egg).
Seriously though, if they can manage to do it, then I can't see why not.

Yes, I would love ladders. It would increase the size of the world we can use. If other games can get it done, Assassin's Creed, than there is no reason for Bethesda not to be able to figure it out.
