land texturing problems

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 9:25 am

Hey all. Tried googling this but came up empty, hoping someone here can help. I'm trying to paint the land of my mod by hand, but for some reason it seems i can't paint certain areas. It also seems completely random, i can paint one area fine, then when i close and reopen the construction kit, it doesn't let me paint that area again. I've included a screenshot to show what i mean. It's like the texture is hitting the end of a cell, but it's not. This screenshot was taken in the middle of a cell.

- as you can see i painted dirt under an object. Then when i went to edit it, it didn't let me paint over it.

EDIT: Problem solved, thanks for the replies!

Its possible that you have too many different textures painted onto those cells. There is a maximum limit for the number of different textures you can paint in a given cell... I think 6 or 7.

When painting landscape textures, I find it helpful to turn on cell view by pressing the hotkey "B". This will toggle the display of the borders/boundaries defining the different exterior cells. Then, bring up the landscape painting editor using the hotkey "H". Finally, after bringing up the landscape editor you can use the hotkey "I" to bring up another window that will show you all of the different landscape textures contained in the cells near your mouse cursor's location. Use this feature to your advantage and delete any unwanted landscape textures using this window by highlighting a texture and hitting the "delete" key. Generally, I start by deleting textures that are not used very much(you can see the texture's percent/usage in the window you brought up). Once you delete enough textures, you should be able to paint again with another texture.

The default CS setup renders 25 cells (5x5) in the render window. You can only paint in the 9 middle cells. The cells along the edge cannot be painted until you move far enough to load another row of cells. That's to keep you from making silly texture painting errors when you can't see what's in the next cell. Other than that, what flightsim said about texture limits, but it doesn't look like that's the problem from your screenshot (unless you have a bunch of textures that aren't visible in the screenshot). The limit is 9 textures, but there are sometimes issues with trying to paint more than 8. You can use vertex painting to give your texture greater variety.

P.S. If you do delete textures from the texture viewer (I key), don't delete the first texture. There is a bug that can cause problems (even corrupting your mod). If you need to get rid of the first texture, paint with a different one until it 'deposes' the first one and then delete it from lower in the list (you'll have to close the texture viewer to update it).
