Language barriers on the european mega server

Post » Thu Feb 20, 2014 8:15 pm

With the way the mega servers work, wont this introduce language barriers within the game
Interaction between two players who speak different languages and only know their native language may be a struggle at times
But when all the different languages in europe get mixed into one pot, not knowing who speaks which language will make it very hard to group and interact together

Will there be some sort of comunication software to translate between french and spanish and english players who only speak their native language?

I'm pretty sure most people playing this game are at least high school level. Most French people in high school for instance can speak at least one foreign language (German, English or Spanish) and study two or three of them.

I'm sure things are similar in other European countries so I wouldn't worry too much. I've played plenty of mmos on EU servers and never felt like that was an issue.

Edit: Also, I have played on Korean/Japanese servers before without really understanding the language but it didn't stop me from playing.
People are more resourceful than you think.

I played with a Russian guy during the ESO beta and even though we couldn't communicate well, I didn't feel that it was an issue.
Of course, if you want to have real fun and be part of something bigger, it might be a good idea to join a guild speaking the same language as you.

My Swedish friend is playing on the NA server, and speaks English. He's grown used to speaking such in games. Most of Europe *can* speak English, German or French, and those are the languages games are most often localized into.

I don't think there'll be a problem. Not like say, Latinos or Brazilians on the NA servers in other games.

Don't think that European countries worry at all...

Most "guilds" demand English

Most "groups" kick if you don't know how to speak English

There are also ( I think ) French only, German only, etc etc... Guilds..

I very much doubt that.

Yes barriers to some degree, but in this day and age you should really know enough English to be able to communicate.

This is always as issue since mmos have typically only offered different servers for English, German and French(maybe Spanish too), and there are quite a bit of other languages.

It might only be those that are used to using their own language (the ones listed above) that might encounter this barrier, everyone else is used to using English as default.

Broken english is the new Esperanto :P

The same solution on the US servers!

I laugh when people on forums always add the "sorry for my English it isn't my native language."

Nah dude, it is still better than your average American raised in the age of text messages.

Yup, the problem are those that will stubbornly speak their native language because it's their right and the server has no official language.

Oh those language wars in Lotro where everybody started using their native language as a protest to one specific group that almost always used theirs.

Yep, modern English and internet-speak have become the international language of choice.

I think if your concerned about playing in a certain language, join a group or guild that communicates in that language. Most of the time, that is who your going to talk to, I would imagine.

Pretty much this.

And many guilds *do* get irritated if you speak in your native language in public guild channels, as not everyone speaks it and it is considered impolite.

Same thing around here irl. I live in California(obviously, under my name) and if you speak Spanish in public, you're looked at rudely because not everyone speaks it.

I have funny stories about people speaking about me "behind my back"(while I'm right there mind you) in Spanish thinking "oh, white person doesn't speak it". I turned around and replied to them "You do know I understand what you're saying right?" In Spanish. Shut them up right quick.

/misc story off

But no, I don't think there will be a problem.

Yes that is true.

I personally do not care if they making an effort I will make an effort and maybe pick up a few words in Chinese, Russian, Spanish, French or what ever language it is and maybe even find out some nice places to go if ever get to that country or city and maybe even wind up with a place to stay for free.

On a second thought having different "styles" of broken english is somewhat... uh... immersive?

Tamriel is huge and it makes sense not everybody speaks the same.

The best melting pot atm is on Planetside 2 where you get people from Russia, Italy, Scotland and Spain speaking in the same TS channel... its like being on the Enterprise :P

Just learn to speak English.

The master language. :D

I've been in guilds with people from all over the world they all speak English so lazy people like me don't have to learn other languages.

And Watch out for them Khajiit kitties without their burkas on, they are strictly out for their own insurgent desires... Im more concerned about the eskimos... Does ESO have eskimoian text in the game? No?
