Language in game.

Post » Wed Oct 21, 2009 5:03 pm

I can tell this game is going to be amazing. And different. Really different. And that's awesome.
But if you want to be even MORE different, you wont put strong language in this game.
Almost every game that comes out is rated M. i think you guys can easily pull off a great fun game with a Teen rating. Easily.
I don't even know if there is going to be language in this game. But if there is, would you mind putting a filter that you can turn on that turns all the swears off?
that would seriously be great
Cheers

I'm to guess ur a teen who want's to play and whom's parents actually follow ESRB?

i'm certainly not opposed to a built-in censorship option... though no hair off my back if not either

I understand reasoning behind having a censor toggle, I just dont care if there is one or not. I dont think I've seen arguments not to have one, only arguements for it for other games. Mostly someone playing the game who has kids and doesnt want them to hear it.

Splash Damage is known for humour, expect that ingame, swearing, probably not. At least no f bombs, could be a couple "Bloody Hell"

Y'know, I'm putting down my money that this game will be T anyway. I have heard next to no swearing in the gameplay videos (even then, it was minor stuff like "damn" or "hell"), and no blood. I don't think a toggle will even be nessecary.

Swears are fine, as long as it's not overdone. A toggle option would do the trick I guess.

Well, if you want to be realistic, I would put them in, but have the toggle, don't want to upset any younger players whose parents want a lower-rated game.

This is after all, a very stressed setting, brothers fighting brothers, and a massive civil war, without some swearing, it seems underdone, I mean Soldiers swear in combat all the time as I've heard.

I don't mind swears but I don't want for all people to say is [censored] [censored] [censored] [censored] [censored] [censored] [censored]

Like that stinkmeaner remix song or something like that. But I have yet to anything like that so.

So, I don't care.

And I don't mind swears pretty much.

At special occasions I set up my ps3 on the projector and all my cousins (19) play against eachother and take turns.
Some of them are younger, and if we're taking turns playing it would be nice to be able to toggle the language.
Don't want the little kiddies swearing in my face >_<

I personally would like to see an option due to my step mom doesn't want to have her kids hear strong language and my lil broski always wants to watch me play. I think if they put the option in they should not bleep it out but rather replace the words with random names of fruit

Way better imo. Anyway, on-topic:

I honestly think swearing has its merit in games for immersion (i.e. BF:BC2 U.S. troops shouting swears at Russians, especially for Avenger kills), just don't make it sound like I'm sitting in a high school lunchroom or listening to [c]rap music.

However, if swearing isn't included, I certainly won't refuse to buy the game because of it, but I do think a lack of it would slightly detract from the atmosphere of cops fighting terrorists or freedom fighters fighting oppressors (depending on your point of view), as I'd expect at least one or two "[censored] YOU [censored]"'s from a situation like that.

Lol at vid. Just out of curiosity, and completely off topic, DeathByJerm do you have an account on the Gearbox forums? Your name and pic both seem really familiar.

Yes actually - I spent a decent amount of time on the Borderlands forums before it launched. Same avatar and everything. Kinda surprised I was recognized though - I lurked mostly until about two months before release.

Ya I think the avatar just stuck out, I spent a good chunk of time on there, bout the same as you, lurked and joined a few months before.

On topic I think I would like some swearing but nothing too hardcoe. I cuss alot but I see no reason for an overuse of profanity on games.

If it were up to me, Most games would be rated R18+ cause I'm a svcker for those sorta games, where they are overly violent, have a hell of a load of gore, and swear (not too often otherwise it sounds like a bunch of bogans having a conversation). The only thing im not keen on, is nudity... I prefer the real stuff, not animated stuff lol

yes, simply because, it makes it more realistic

can you see someone getting shot in his leg and saying "i got shot"?
according to the blips on any tv-show using clips from real-life situations, swear words get used in practically every senctence by people off the streets.
then imagine giving a guy a real reason to start swearing, but not implement it in a game, that should at least try to be a bit realistic.

a turn-off option could be used, but don't say it's so the kids won't hear, they shouldn't be playing, and they sure as hell won't turn it off.
