Large Address Aware!

Post » Thu Dec 15, 2011 8:42 am

Beth just announced (I'm probably slow on this) that they plan to patch in LAA for the next patch!

Woot! I was afraid I would never see this, honestly. After they patched it out in the first hotfix, I was terrified that, for some reason, they might never support LAA .exe files. But now... some faith restored. Weee.

The last LAA exe has worked for me through 1.2 and probaby will for 1.3 as well. I guess it will be nice to actually use the "Play" button in steam to start my game. I am really surprized this wasn't rolled into 1.2 or 1.3 though. My game crashes every 15 minutes and has broken pink textures without it, and many other people reported this as well. Ah well, good news.

LAA or Large Address Aware allows PCs to use more than 2GB of memory. Regardless of how much memory your computer may have, an applications that is not designed with the large address flag set will not utilize it.

The LAA mod that has been out for awhile fixed all of the crashes from the initial launch for me. Glad to see it will be in the actual program though

Same here. I used the first LAA mod and it was wonderful, but I never did use the second one. Seemed kinda piratey to me. This is good news indeed, that we now have official support for it.

Now, if we can only get multi-core processor support then we are in like Flynn. It svcks a little bit that I rushed out and bought an i7, 8gb rm, 2gb graphics card just so it can run essentially on the same rig I played Oblivion on. I needed a new computer anyway, so its not so much a complaint but I did expect more in terms of hardware requirements.

So when is it going to take advantage of 16GB?

When game companies start writing x64 bit games. Which should take place roughly 35 years after 64 bit processors and 30 years after 64 bit operating systems.
