My theory is that this a post-apocalyptic fantasy game with mini nukes, mutants, syringes that heal broken limbs, etc... As long as it's consistent with itself, I'm fine with it. I don't think there's a game on the market that has an accurate portrayal of laser weaponry as we know it today. Most games portray laser guns as a projectile weapon that "shoots" a brightly colored beam that travels extremely slow for something that's supposed to be focused light/heat because of how historical sci-fi movies have depicted them in the past. As everyone says, real life "laser" weapons probably be silent, I doubt it would shoot projectiles, it would be a constant focused burn, so think of burning something with a magnifying glass, except multiple times stronger obviously.
If they or some other dev wants to tackle this depiction in a later title, I'm all for it, but I don't see them changing it or removing recoil or whatever just because the public is just now realizing that laser guns don't work how they do in movies and games.
Not everything in fictional gaming has to be grounded in reality. Look at something like Star Wars... Those laser fights with the storm troopers would be pretty boring if they didn't shoot those brightly colored projectiles and had those sounds coming from their blasters. Or even space battles with no visible laser beams or sounds... The Death Star shooting a heavily focused invisible beam to burn a planet...lol
