Laser Gun recoilsound Discussion

Post » Fri Mar 18, 2016 4:08 am

The heated argument continues between those that say the laser gun is awesome and those that say "It should have no recoil or sound as it is just a glorified flash light".

Here is my second video showing off how silly the gun looks and sounds without sound or recoil.

and here's the first one.

Lets discuss.

Jeez, I'm pretty sure this didn't need another discussion. So I'll just repeat myself: does the Laser Musket actually fire a laser? It looks and sounds more like a bolt of lightning.

My theory for conventional lasers: There's an explosive reaction happening inside the barrel that generates a light, which is focused into a laser out of the gun.

More likely answer: We've got nuclear powered cars, miniaturized nuclear bombs, Miniguns you can walk around and carry, Mr. Handy thrusters that don't set anything on fire, scorpions the size of cars, and people get hung up on the freaking laser guns having noise and recoil? Come on.

No mods. Just my editing skills.

I didn't think we needed to discuss it more either. I'm with you. Fallout is a world where you carry 3 mini-guns, 2 fatmans, 9 pipe rifles and still have room to carry 1000 of each ammo on your bikini armour, but heavens forbid a weaponised laser powered by a micro fusion cell to make some noise and have recoil.

I still notice people making threads about it, so I make these to show them how silly they look without it.

I like your theory. Fallout is a made up pretend world not based in this reality. We shouldn't ever try to treat it as such. It's funny how simply setting a fantasy game in the future, gets huge discussions of reality.. Whereas if you set it in a fantasy realm which looks more like the past you get no weird discussions like. "Shooting a flame spell from your fingers shouldn't sound like a flamethrower."

player setscale to 0.05 then go under the handy and jump to get a suntan. It burns.

I tiny me baskets to burning thrashcans are fun but amphitheater fire is themost fun.

Btw the recoil in laser guns are so weak why does that it matter that much

Gonna say it again.

The laser rifle should keep the noise and recoil. I mean, what's a laser without the Sci-Fi noises?

Too many movies and games over the ages have worked this way. Who cares

I don't see why all of a sudden there is debate over this. Unless some how, I've been missing those threads on every other game forum.

Ignoring the nit pickiness of saying laser rifles having recoil while shooting death ckaws and supermutants...

Light may not have mass to which to provide kick back, but the tech used to create a beam of light concentrated enough to incinerate a target would still have to generate a lot of energy of which it would have to disperse.

But if we're being realistic the rifle would probably melt after one use.

Really, if laser guns were supposed to be realistic we would be using fission cells instead of fusion cells, as it is extremely hard to contain that energy in a small package.

Though really, then it wouldn't have enough power to disintegrate people, so in the end, it's just a made up weapon that we can't really explain with a real life perspective. :P

I like the sound because it tells me there is a fight going on nearby and it could be the brotherhood fighting supermutants even though I can't see anybody. Then I can go investigate (or loot). Since only minuteman seem to carry Laser Muskets I know there are some friendlies nearby who need help (or not, depending on your character's motives). I don't care if it's realistic, it's helpful and adds some life to the game.

Here is how I see the laser mess: Does it matter? Lasers are energy, and provide powerful hits of energy, but Plasma weapons hit both ballistic and energydefenses, so are good all around. Leave the lasers to the Brotherhood and Institute, use the almighty GOOMAKER!

Here. I'm going to show everyone how exciting true-to-life lasers would be. This is the real-life sound of over 100 high-powered lasers firing in three devastating salvos:

There needs to be another Sonic weapon in Fallout. Focus it on an enemy and it ruins their PER and makes them flee.

Pardon my ignorance on the subject as I have done zero research. But. If you line up several of the worlds most powerful lazers that we have available to us and turn them on; the machines LITERALLY make ZERO noise and you wouldnt be able to tell they fired unless you were looking at them?

If so, kudos on the designer(s), but that sounds a little farfetched.

You might hear a slight hum coming from the generators. Lasers have no moving parts. The machine itself makes 0% noise.

OH! And!

The intensity and temperatures required to make the beam visible in clear, daylight air would be so high, it would flash-burn the user holding the weapon, and heat the air around the beam up hundreds of degrees C. So you wouldn't be able to see the beam either. Just a very bright flash where the beam touches the target. Which would also be silent. Maybe a slight sizzle.

Thats crazy. Though now that you mention that I remember being taught in science class that lazers (generally) are invisible to the naked eye. (Damn that was a long time ago.)

Could be more interesting with different types of gun handling. Laser does low damage but is very accurate and no recoil. Projectile guns have recoil and are less accurate but does high damage. Plasma could be somewhere between. This would make you choose a gun based on not only DPM but gun handling also, making the gun mechanics a lot more interesting. It would be even more interesting if different guns had different penetration capabilities and different reliability too.

If something is silly it's legendary weapons.

My theory is that this a post-apocalyptic fantasy game with mini nukes, mutants, syringes that heal broken limbs, etc... As long as it's consistent with itself, I'm fine with it. I don't think there's a game on the market that has an accurate portrayal of laser weaponry as we know it today. Most games portray laser guns as a projectile weapon that "shoots" a brightly colored beam that travels extremely slow for something that's supposed to be focused light/heat because of how historical sci-fi movies have depicted them in the past. As everyone says, real life "laser" weapons probably be silent, I doubt it would shoot projectiles, it would be a constant focused burn, so think of burning something with a magnifying glass, except multiple times stronger obviously.

If they or some other dev wants to tackle this depiction in a later title, I'm all for it, but I don't see them changing it or removing recoil or whatever just because the public is just now realizing that laser guns don't work how they do in movies and games.

Not everything in fictional gaming has to be grounded in reality. Look at something like Star Wars... Those laser fights with the storm troopers would be pretty boring if they didn't shoot those brightly colored projectiles and had those sounds coming from their blasters. Or even space battles with no visible laser beams or sounds... The Death Star shooting a heavily focused invisible beam to burn a planet...lol
