Think about it, if he had lived just 3 more years he would have experienced the 100th anniversary of the war. That's insane.

it's a bit old news

but yeah that would be insane, when they interviewed him he seemed like a pretty cool guy, he was even cocky about his status. They quoted him as saying

"well, I never thought I'd be the last veteran of WWI, but if it's so, it might as well be me." haha

Yea, I heard about this a few weeks ago.

That generation is pretty much over. It is interesting to think about.

That's certainly interesting, if not slightly sad.

Oh well!

Its interesting to think that there are no longer any survivors for such a terrible war. All the information about it will be given from books now, no longer from first hand accounts of the violent battles. Thats pretty strange to think about, really.

I wonder how someone who lived trough the two world wars thought about the stuff going on now. "War. War never changes"? :hehe:

I can see you have a lot of sympathy towards it.

I am glad now that every one of those soldiers are resting in peace and no longer have to remember everything that happened. That was probably a big burden to bare.

but thats nothing! there is an old african american lady that has lived to be 118 or something like that, and is still kicking! She was born in like 1880 or 90 something? I'll go look it up. but that is insane!!!!!!

But anyway yeah it's sad that the only WWI veteran has passed away---God Speed WWI Veteran.

Wow, he was also the last person alive to see the scuttling of the German fleet at Scapa Flow.

110, what an age. Incredible.

It's sad that he died, and was the last, but it had to happen sometime. I bet he had some pretty badass stories.

He was; reports say he was born in Worcestershire.

Regarding "old news" comments, I'm not sure how today's news is "old": maybe I've just got slow in my old age.

That's a quote from Einstein: "I do not know what weapons World War 3 will be fought with, but i do know the fourth will be fought with sticks and stones" ...or something like that. I do hope he was wrong.

Wait...was he still living over in Europe? I know in my general area, a WW1 Veteran that was the same age just died, and there was a big thing about where he was going to be buried, in Arlington, or somewhere else, he was eventually buried in Arlington which were his wishes. I might not be talking about the same person as the rest of you though.

I think http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wwi-veteran-frank-buckles-lies-repose-arlington-natl/story?id=13140723 is what we were thinking of.

Yeah, Frank Buckles! That's him. I could have sworn the news stories around here said HE was the last surviving WW1 vet. Maybe it just meant last surviving WW1 vet in the U.S.

He was a chap called http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claude_Choules, born 1901 in Worcestershire in England, became a naturalised Australian citizen between wars, apparently, and died in Australia yesterday.
