EA latest publisher to sign for gog.com

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 1:08 pm

As of today, EA is yet another publisher to sign a deal for gog.com, effectively allowing the site a nice catalogue of classic games. Question is, what are the games your are most looking forward to? As for me, the prospect of seeing the System Shock series make their way onto the site has me excited.

!!!

Awesome news. Sadly the press release says it doesn't include the System Shock series, which is what I'd really like to see. Not sure why EA's just sitting on that franchise.

They do say they're adding Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri though, which is beyond fabulous. (I already own a physical copy of SMAC + the expansion that works fine on Windows 7, so I probably won't be buying it, but now I can tell all the people I've been nagging to buy it that they have no excuse. :D) Still my favorite game of all time there.

I know at least one person who will be thrilled to see Dungeon Keeper on GoG, too.

Don't worry, those things always start slow. Dungeon Keeper, Ultima Underworld and Privateer are only among the games which are at the same time often asked for and easy to persuade to work on XP and higher. ^_^

Kinda strange that they'd announce their own digital distribution platform and sign on with GOG.

Oh well. System Shock, Wing Commander, Syndicate, etc.

I'm wondering whether to get Wing Commander: Privateer. I've never played it. Does it hold it's own when compared to games like Freelancer and Frontier?

Edit: also, Alpha Centauri on GoG would be fantastic! Best 4X ever made, imho.

Their own platform is for new games. The old ones wouldn't really work straight out of the box, and what's better than somebody else doing the work to make them and getting profits out of it at the same time?

I have a physical copy of System Shock 2 but I'd love for it to appear on GoG so that everyone else can enjoy it too.

My problem is, that thing seems to have major issues working on xp, and more importantly for me, Vista. The guys at gog have a pretty good record of making problematic games run pretty well.

I wonder how long until EA kills this off again.

Could the internets please make up their mind already? One day it's EA only wanting money, today it's EA strolling away from something profitable which we like...

It's good news, but unfortunately http://www.gog.com/en/news/gog_com_s_catalog_gets_huge_with_addition_of_classic_ea_titles. Some extra legal nonsense is involved with those games. We should be able to expect a lot more EA classics from the 90s, though ^_^

Not really, Privateer is more of Wing Commander spin-off rather than the Wing Commander.

Which reminds me, about a year ago there were http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-09-28-ea-releasing-dosboxed-wing-commander, I wonder if that still is in the works?

Forgot about Sim City 2000. God, I lost so many hours to that game (at least until Alpha Centauri came along). I think if GoG got that one I'd reflexively throw all my money at them.

Looks cool, Dungeon Keeper is definitely one of my favorites, though it unfortunately doesn't seem to include the extra-maps expansion. Also looking forward to Magic Carpet, which my computers were either too old or too new for back when I had access.

Considering all the crap they have to go through with EA and the rest, I guess that would be the least of their problems.

Pretty much all issues of SS2 with modern PC's and OS's are fixed by http://www.systemshock.org/index.php?topic=392.0, so I'm sure the GoG folks can figure something out.

"While the agreement between Electronic Arts and GOG.com brings back many acclaimed and well known franchises, it doesn’t include the much anticipated System Shock or Syndicate series at this time."

Unfortunately both System Shock and Syndicate seem to be in licensing limbo, with companies other than EA holding some of the rights needed to sell the game through GOG. So it looks like we'll all need to wait a little bit longer for those games.

The main game from my youth I'm really looking forward to replaying once it makes an appearance is Sim City 2000; and although I still have SMAC on disc it'll be nice getting a GOG version of it as well (I'm just hoping that Alien Crossfire is included). And looking through the list of potential EA games that might show up it seems like I've never actually played most of them (yes, I am ashamed), so I'll get to finally experience them for the first time. I'll definitely be picking up all six of the games already announced (Dungeon Keeper, Privateer, Ultima Underworld 1&2, Crusader: No Remorse, SMAC, and Magic Carpet)... I'm just wondering when I'll find time to play them all, and that's on top of my already sizable backlog.

I'd been hearing a lot about this announcement before it happened (over on the GOG forum) and I'm just disappointed that it wasn't LucasArts.

I definitely would have liked LucasArts as well (I really, really, really want to get my hands on TIE Fighter again). However, when they made the announcement that they had signed a big new publisher they also mentioned they were in negotiations with two more big publishers from among Square Enix, Take Two, LucasArts, and Microsoft Game Studios, and that the deals should be wrapped up by the end of summer. So there's still the distinct possibility of LucasArts games on GOG in the not too distant future.

Ultima Underworld games are fantastic, and could be considered predecessors to TES series. Glad to see they are available on gog. The level design on them is absolutely wonderful.

I've never actually purchased anything from GoG, I think I might have to have a bit of a trawl.

Already have pretty much all the classic EA games I'd want to get (and that's quite a lot of them), so this doesn't mean all that much in the end, but hey, maybe one will pop up sometime that I'd forgotten I'd missed. Might as well keep an eye out, I suppose. :)
