Launcher and game both crash

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 11:42 pm

Since I got an automated response from support I'll try my luck here. I haven't been able to get past the launcher since release.

What happens:

When I open the game through Steam, the launcher appears and crashes within about a second ("Fallout 4 Launcher has stopped working"). If I can manage to hit "Play" before it crashes, it closes the launcher and appears to begin loading the game, before crashing again (once again "Fallout 4 Launcher has stopped working").

If I open the launcher manually from the game directory it works perfectly fine. I can open the options and change things around and it doesn't crash at all. But, if I hit "Play", then once again, the launcher crashes. If I launch Fallout4.exe from the game directory, it too crashes after trying to load for a few seconds ("Fallout 4 has stopped working").

Inspection of the Windows Event Viewer and dump files indicate that in all cases the error is due to an Access Violation (0xC0000005).

What I've tried:

  • Reinstalling the game
  • Verifying game cache integrity
  • Installing the beta 1.1.30 update
  • Updating my video card drivers
  • Attempting old driver versions that others have said worked
  • Disabling my antivirus
  • Disabling all background programs
  • Running both the launcher and game in compatibility mode for Windows 7
  • Running the launcher and game as administrator
  • Running the game with only one monitor plugged in
  • Running "sfc /scannow" to check the system files (no errors)
  • Running memtest86+ (no errors)
  • Disabling GeForce Experience, ShadowPlay, etc.
  • Running Steam as administrator

My machine:

  • Intel Core i5-3570k @ 3.4 GHz (not overclocked)
  • 16 GB memory
  • EVGA GTX 970 4GB (not overclocked)
  • Windows 7 Home Premium

I have spent way too much time trying to get this thing working and I'm at wit's end. It may be high time for a refund. Please, any assistance is appreciated. I just want to play the game.

Did you do the Launch game as administrator and change the compatibility mode to windows 7 in both the Fallout.exe & Falloutlauncher .exe files?

I had the same problem found that the compatibility mode was on Vista instead of windows 7 on both files also had to tick on both files for running as administrator.

Hi Zamboneh,

This can often be caused by an antivirus preventing programs from opening or loading. Can you try adding Fallout4.exe to your antivirus exceptions to see if it helps bypass the access error?

An odd predicament indeed. Just to be safe (ironically) I'm going to try and uninstall the antivirus completely and see what that does. I also read something about the Nvidia control panel. I'll post an update after I do my tinkering.

Guys, I fixed it.

If you're having this problem perform the following steps (presumably only for Nvidia card owners - sorry):

  • Open up services.msc (through the start menu or run)
  • Stop and disable the "Nvidia Streamer Service"

Immediately after I did this the game works perfectly.
