Law and Punishment.

The Law sytem in previous Beth titles has not been the best, from an entire town trying to kill you over a teacup in Fallout 3 to a guard throwing you into jail in Skyrim just because you picked a flower.

I really hope Bethesda has Improved the law system, to a more realistic degree, like for example stealing a cup gets you a warning while murder or fighting gets you a jail time out or the guards attack you.

What do you think, should Bethesda leave the system as it is or should they fix it?

I think the bounty system in Skyrim was a massive step in the right direction. If your infamy builds up enough you should be attacked/arrested in all major towns, but not necessarily small settlements.

However, I do agree, if you get caught doing stealing something small or doing something trivial, then you should be questioned on it by guards, but persuasion should be able to get you out of being fined/thrown in jail.

Agreed. It was to the point where I'd save before doing something that might be considered aggressive just because I didn't want to ruin relationships with that place. That was annoying

They should try to fix this for the example you have given. I am interested in the real time lockpicking mini game as it hopefully make stealing a lot harder. The only time I get caught stealing is when I accidentally steal something.

I dunno. It IS the Wasteland. If I stole something in front of a guy, and he didn't come after me to get his property back in some fashion, I'd question his possessing of a spine.

Law and policing is for larger towns and settlements that actually equate to a community.

Personally, I try and avoid a fight and the law all the same. I'm not gonna steal something unless I really need it, and even then, my experiences being a thief in these kinds of games has taught me to be smart about my operating. Case the joint, make sure no one's looking, and have an exit strategy.

For simplification, I'm fine with with rep lose and people coming at me with something sharp if I go in hot handed and dumb.

In all honesty, you kinda deserve what you get at that point. You should have respected the chicken. She was blue ribbon.

Awwwww... What's the matter, did someone steal your sweet roll?

Yes. And I shot them for it. This is the wasteland.

It would be nice if communities would not swarm like a family of hive brained creatures. But yeah, I think most of the wasteland is not made of communities that have established law and order so even if it is a bit lacking, it is not a huge issue for me. It looks like there is an entire perk tree devoted to pickpockets though, so maybe there will be some areas with realistic wasteland law and order.

Agreed that we shouldn't have everyone in town out to gun us down over looting a spork.

I would like to not be accused to being a thief for simply looking at an object (or in most cases, simply moving my reticule over them as I turn).

Also, for crimes that we commit, how nice would it be if a witness had to pass by/interact with other NPC's in order to spread the word of your mis-deeds. This way if I punch an old lady on one side of town, everyone at the far side of town isn't automatically hostile towards me as if they are omniscient.

I remember the whole town killing me because i killed their chicken XD

Also i remember there was a bug of people getting caught lock picking when "nobody" was around. Turns out the AI of the chickens were narking! Damn chicken snitches. They fixed it eventually but i kinda thought it was more comical.

Is it unrealistic? yes, but so is the fact that characters never go to the bathroom, (except for duke nukem) lol

Just sit back and enjoy how funny it actually is that you saved someones life and they're going to kill you over a tea cup. (besides what are you doing stealing tea cups? there's boatloads you don't have to steal)

I'm hopeful we'll see good use of the Intimidation Perk with regards to this. Like if I pull a shotgun on a guy who is coming after me over a ruined book I stole, and I have that perk, I can tell him to "Think twice." and "Forget about this, it isn't worth getting shot over." I'd still take a reputation hit, but at least the NPCs wouldn't be making a suicidal bum rush against the well-armed wastelander.

It's actually better than most people make it out to be. For petty crimes and assaults you can usually just run away or holster your weapon and they'll lay off (but they certainly won't like you), and Skyrim's guards would really only pester you if your bounty was really high or they caught you in the act.

For Fallout 4 I'm hoping they turn Skyrim's regional bounties into faction-specific bounties. Would be a nice blend of crime mechanics and New Vegas's faction mechanics (which I felt were really awkwardly implemented).

I wonder how it will work with us setting up towns, villages, outposts and so on. Do we have to make the choice or is it done for us?

I keep forgetting that Fallout 3 was made 7 years ago... and Skyrim was made 4 years ago... In the three years between FO3 and Skyrim there were huge improvements, so it makes perfect sense to expect things will be at least as good as Skyrim minus obvious things learned from that game like the chicken issue and guard dialogue. Also, I had no idea holstering your weapon worked in FO3.

haha, if we could define our own laws that would be AWESOME!! My guess is that you can hire guards at the most though
