Laying to Rest the NCR vs BoS debate.

War with Brotherhood of Steel

Even though the relationship between the NCR and the Brotherhood of Steel was never without some tensions, it got much worse when Jeremy Maxson became the leader of the Brotherhood. He favored a return to power by wresting all advanced tech from the hands of "lesser people" by any means necessary. Some time after 2242 the war with the New California Republic was announced.

For years the war waged on and was considered a victory for the Brotherhood of Steel. However, no matter how many troops fell to the Brotherhood's superior technology, the NCR always seemed to have more replacements available. The Brotherhood, however, was not so fortunate. Being an elitist group, replacements were short in arriving. It soon became obvious that the Brotherhood was doomed to lose the war to the NCR's greater numbers. Morale at the bunker began to falter as the war seemed more and more hopeless. Eventually the inevitable happened. Lower ranking members of the Brotherhood began to desert their posts.

At some point between 2241 and 2253, Hoover Dam joined the NCR. During the war with the Brotherhood, the Dam lost contact with the rest of the NCR and considered itself the capital city of the Republic. The Brotherhood had taken it over at some point, but the NCR managed to retake it in 2280.

End

I will grant that it is Van Buren stuff but please remember the people who were making van buren, at least many of them, are making this game.

BoS won the battle but lost the war.

I do agree with you, but Van Buren is not canon ( :cryvaultboy:) and we do not know if Obsidian (There are only a few in OB that worked on the series) or Bethesda has changed their plans. Now, I want to safely say that Bethesda would leave both factions alone and similar to their FO2 counterparts...but theres always the tiny, very tiny chance that WCBoS will be turned into carebears like East Coast with the support of the people and larger population. So I will wait for New Vegas to come out and see how both factions act before I will able to decide.

Edit: And yes, I do believe the NCR would win due to logistics (And Hoover Dam was won because of logistics and the fact that the two caravan companies had a large moment of awesome by breaking through/sneaking by the BoS)

Edit 2!: We really need to stop putting NCR vrs BoS threads on the New Vegas board...

Its as canon as fan-fics due to the fact it was never released :)

To be honest, its more significant than fanfics ~ which have no impact on canon whatsoever. Its not an obscure made up story, its something written by the games developers.

It was intended to be released, and the world was intended to be presented as is shown in the Van Buren design docs The game may not have been released, but the design docs are available freely, so whenever it isnt contradictory there is no real reason not to accept it as canon.

I think we need to split to two categories of Canon: "Hard" Canon (stuff thats in FO1/2/3 and more or less incontravertable) and "Soft" canon (Tactics, VB, Fallout Bibles, and Dev comments that can be overridden)

To me, VB doesn't factor as "Definiative Proof" but its the "State of play until stated otherwise". That said, I really didn't like a lot of what they had planned for VB.
