Learning to Ice Skate

Post » Sun Nov 21, 2010 2:48 am

Me and my family are going to a local ice skating rink tomorrow, and it will be my first time.
Dont know how hard it is going to be, but everyone has been saying its a bit hard your first time.

Are there any tips i could use so i dont fall as often? (if that makes any sense) lol

Skating is very similar to rollerblading or nordic skiing if you've done either of those.

FIrst time on the ice, hold onto something (not a person). First time skaters usually want to walk on their skates. Remember, you are pushing to the side. Take it slow and wear a helmet the first time. It's easy to fall backwards.

I just learned to skate last January, and what helped me most was just being confident about it. Falling hardly hurts and if you do fall, just get right back up.

If you fall, tuck your hands in. You don't want your hands splayed on the ice for long or you run the risk of someone skating over your fingers - not good.

For that reason it's also a good idea to wear thick gloves, just in case.

Yeah, I'm the least co-ordinated person ever but skating's pretty easy to get the hang on. Maybe go round a few times clutching the wall.

I've played ice hockey for 10 years and skating is like walking for me now. I recommend using a cone or stacked milk crates to help you keep your balance. They usually supply them at the rink.

I learned to ice skate by starting with the walls of the skating rink.

Being Canadian, I'm genetically engineered by the government to know how to play hockey at birth so I can't give many tips....

We had a skating unit for Gym in junior high and the people who couldn't skate held onto the wall at first. I agree confidence goes a long way.

Do they still make the two bladed skates? Those things were awesome. I still have my pair from when I was like 2

I had dual blades as well!

What are folks' opinion on figure vs. hockey skates for beginers? The hockey skates are harder to propell yourself with for a beginer (a figure skate one can just push off the toe). But the toe pick on the figure skate and trip one up.

But really, rather than confidence, I'd say not being afraid to fall and get hurt are the main things!

When I first started, I had hockey skates. Can't say I really had a problem though.

I broke the growth plate in my left wrist by ice skating.. just a month ago too lol.
Make sure you get good shoes! I went to a cheap skating place, and the shoes were weird, made it almost impossible to skate.

I've always skated in figure skating skates until about a year ago, when I borrowed my brother's hockey skates since I couldn't find my own - and man, they were so much easier to skate in! I don't know if that's just me, though, but I'd recommend hockey skates from personal experience.

My GF was the same way. She had figure skates but I gave her a pair of my old hockey skates and said they just felt better and more secure.
