Left Handed and Skyrim re-mastered

Post » Sun Jun 19, 2016 4:50 pm

1st, I'm really looking forward to the re-master of Skyrim, I'm currently playing through my umpteenth play through, heavily modded on PC and still loving this game :)

One gripe though, as a left hander i use windows mouse properties to swap my mouse buttons (I use mouse in left hand), Skyrim menus dont accept windows mouse setting, so we're left using our left click to do what would be our right click, and right click to do what would be our left click, this isn't right (or left ;p)

Sound confusing? it is, and annoying.

Fallout 4 is slightly better, It accepts the button swap on most menus, but still reverts to the unswaped layout for others. e.g. to exit game i can use primary click ( R click for me ) to select EXIT, but have to use secondary click ( L click for me ) to select to desktop.

So please have a thought for us lefties with the remastered version, it's not a big problem but it does get annoying and confusing.

Thanks :)

HUH...super glad I just use the 360 controller... though I did try the mouse and keyboard... to confusing, maybe that was why... I could not manage to right click ...correctly with my right hand... let alone move the mouse around.

Question?

If you play with a controller on a pc

Does the keyboard also still function for additional inputs during play?

Yes and no... ~ and f12 work no problems, after you hit the ~ key you can use the keyboard, my mouse moves the cursor reguardless.. their IS a mod that allows the full functionality of controller and mouse and keyboard at the same time. I have found that I really don't need to use it unless I am using an animation mod (not puppet master ).

This could be because I started out on 360 so I don't miss the extra keys one can bind for specific things. Heh, most of the time I don't use the controller bind keys.

It's a personal preference. .. I tried the mouse and keyboard. .. hated how award it was for me and switched to the controller.

What? No my friend, more so for games like Skyrim. You would have an argument IF we where talking about a FPS game where mouse and keyboard are better for pinpoint accuracy. Games like Skyrim, where being 100% accurate is not necessary controller is the way to go.

I should add though. That it's all personal preference, those that are used to mouse and keyboard won't like the controller and those that are used to a controller won't really like mouse and keyboard. IMO, controller is the way to go. But, as I said, I'm used to using a controller.

I do have an XBOX controller yeah, I'm not great for aiming with it so its mostly used for riding and some easy melee, that's missing the point of my post though, a game should respect the mouse button configuration from window. Sadly alot of games still dont. It's not a massive problem its just an annoyance that shouldn't be there.

The problem with Skyrim runs deeper than just not respecting mouse and keyboard remapping. Skyrim specifically bypasses normal Windows functions for input; they mess up hardware that they don't even need to touch. Skyrim disables my gaming keyboard's volume control, for absolutely no reason I can imagine.

Is that why my mouse cursor lags so terribly in menus?

I'm left Handed, and reset Skyrim so that the LMB controls Whatever is equipped in the PC's left Hand.

Settings are under Keybindings.

Its not the in-game controls that I'm talking about, as you say they can be rebound, it's the menu's, inventory etc.

This is kinda off topic, but look at nexusmods site the biggest and best place to get mods, most authors support donations rather than payed for mods, this wont change. All the best mods will remain free (with optional donations)

I understand the point your trying to make BUT I highly doubt any changes will be made, unless they change it with the new and improved version Skyrim coming out. The controller idea was just a quick fix. You'll get better at aiming the more you use the controller :)

Lefties united!

I use GlovePIE 0.43 by Carl Kenner https://sites.google.com/site/carlkenner/glovepie

I can map ANY device input to ANY game/App control with that. In Skyrim I have the mouse buttons reversed, I even have "take all" and "exit" mapped to the left and right mousewheel tilt inputs (for faster looting!).

These are all solutions to the symptoms and not the problem, I'm use to having to switch between left and right handed as are most left handers, as a new re-mastered release has been announced I thought I'd bring up the subject in the hope that it just may get noticed and a Dev might look into it.

If enough fellow left handers also replied asking for this to be looked into, it might just be :)

It would yes, but that still would not solve the fact that a lot of games ignore us lefties, i use an ambidextrous mouse ( a Razer Abyssus ) I could splash out on a left handed mouse but why should I have to? my current mouse is in excellent working order and left handed mice are rare, limited and harder to get hold of. Besides I'm stubborn and like to fight for the cause of equal rights for lefties against the right handed oppressors !

This whole topic makes me wonder if there's legit left-handed console controllers, not that I'd have a use for one but I don't ever recall seeing one.

I admit it would be nice not having to flip-flop mouse buttons or constantly remap every single game from WASD to arrow keys, but then I remember how nearly impossible it was to do left-handed school assignments on a right-handed school desk and I get humble again

It IS kind of odd that in games, you can have subtitles for the hearing impaired, different color schemes for the color blind, etc..., but lefties who outnumber all of them get treated like the stinky kid who nobody wants to acknowledge lol.

There are left handed controllers, as with mice they are also a very rare species. From what I've seen there a 2 types, the most common is the type you can switch the D-pad with the ABXY buttons. There is also a type you which is a mirror of the standard controller. But I'm used to the standard layout, I think I would find it easier to aim with the left stick and move with the right but after so long using it the right handed way it feels wrong.

Thanks, that's good to know. If I ever invest in a console i might have to try tracking one of those controllers down.

Oh, and I think I've figured out why so many things don't have options for lefties. It's because the righties know that a super high percentage of us are more ambidextrous than they'll ever be and they're jealous! Lol.

The irony of that is they made us that way by not giving us lefty options in the first place
