Left handed Discrimination

Post » Mon Mar 17, 2014 5:19 pm

Hello ESO community. First things first, I love this game. From gameplay to graphics, it's awesome. Unfortunately I have one major issue which is currently holding me back from pre-ordering the game - This game has no left handed setup. On top of that, every hero must have all keys re-bound. I'm not sure if this is intentional, or a bug, but changing my binds for 10 minutes every hero I want to make is very frustrating.

It is now the year 2014, and left handed humans are on the rise. Blizzard, EA, and other major gaming companies all offer left handed setups and customs profiles for thier products. Please put more emphasis on this in future patches. If information is needed on which binds would make a good left handed setup, I would definitely assist with that!

Thanks, Joshua

I would suggest to leave them feedback about this - I think this is one feature that should be in game for launch and I believe the devs would probably listen as it sounds quite important.

I am left handed. Have been my whole life.

Somehow I have overcome that disability and learned to use the mouse with my right hand. I know, it's been a long and terrible road but I have succeeded after years of determination.

--

On a serious note, it's not hard to 'learn' to use a mouse with your right hand and keyboard controls/bindings with your left. Are you typing on a keyboard with both hands? Then you can learn this. It's all muscle memory. Give it a whirl instead of expecting the entire world to revolve around your refusal to use something the way everyone else does.

I take it you're new to gaming? I've gotten so use to changing binds when I first boot up a game it's second nature. Granted having to do it for each character is a pain but there's no excuse for it taking you 10 minutes. You should know your binds already and punching them in should take a minute at most. Inconvenient, yes, horrible sin? Not really, it's like this in every game.

Just be glad they didn't pull a Skyrim and lock out half the keyboard and then take a year to fix it without using mods.

They could make quite a few people happy if they allowed you to save your control scheme, and apply it to all future characters. This way, anyone who prefers a setup different than the default (including left-handed players, disabled people, and players who simply like to change their keybinds around) only ever have to change their control scheme once.

Honestly? Why would I choose to use my non-dominant for my mouse? I learned to use computers left handed. If you are truly left handed, you're at a disadvantage if you're gaming with your right

Expecting the whole world to revolve around me? Who are you man? Are you not aware the only reason there are more right handed people in this world is because of forced teaching and religious oppression? Stop being such a sass because of your superior ambidextrous skills (which every lefty has anyway).

Complete lefty here, I eat and write and draw with my left hand.

Never had any issues with using my mouse with my right hand and my keyboard with my left though. Sorry, but as a leftie, what you're trying to push her seems like a waste of resources to me. Being a leftie isn't exactly a disorder or anything.

Believe me, I have tried, tried again and tried some more, its simply not worth the effort. I have been gaming for over 20 years, and when gaming mouse's came I tried to change, since they were all right handed, it simply did not work. Now I have a left handed razer naga and I am happy.

And, before you retort, I am semi ambidexterous, when I was a kid and started writing I used both hands, if I picked up the pencil with my left hand, i used left, if I picked it up with my right hand I used my right. I play tennis with my right hand, but I play squash with my left hand, I throw darts with both, I throw with the right, but kick with the left when playing soccer. I play table tennis with both, I can play with one in each hand if I play solo against two others etc etc, simply put, I use my right hand for a lot of things, but I just cant use it for the mouse if its supposed to be fast (I can use the mouse with my right hand fine for office work and surfing the web etc, just not for fps and strategy games etc.

20 years of muscle memory is not an easy thing to change, so changeing the mouse to the right hand, I just cant do it, even if I know it wil give me a gaming advantage in the long run.

Its not a problem for me in ESO however, as the first thing I do, and always do, is to remap keys, I dont even think about it anymore, however, doing it on every toon is a hassle, make keymapping account wide please.

I see no discrimination here. ESO doesn't lack left handed support, you can freely rebind keys. I do it for all my characters even though I'm right handed. The only problem is that I have to repeat it every time, this needs to be fixed.

If you want to point out a problem, look at Skyrim and all of its hardcoded keys. Look at handheld consoles - think you can rebind circle pad from the left side to the right? Now this is a nightmare for people who refuse to adjust. ESO is fine, you can customize it.

I'm not being literal when I say discrimination. Only used the word to bring attention to the issue.

While I think it is silly not to by the game simply because it doesn't come with a default left-handed configuration, I do think they should try make it a little easier for people to switch. Seriously. What happened to rebinds applying to all characters. Games used to do that. Now we have to make the same changes on each character. Why? That is not just an inconvenience for left-handed people, it is inconvenient for everybody.

I fail to see how being left handed would have a preset... Just like right handed people... If you don't like how keys are bound... reset them. It's pretty simple really. Maybe I just don't understand I don't know.

I'm a lefty and use my mouse with my right hand too (very handy actually as you may know), but that doesn't entitle either of us to say tough luck to those who don't. If the shoe were on the other foot, as they say...

You devalue the word if you use it in such context.

The OP's main complaint is that you have to re-bind the keys for every new character you create - there's no global key binding.

Some of the posts on here, to the theme of 'svck it up', are being pretty needlessly selfish. If it doesn't affect you, then why the **** are you here criticising someone it does affect?

I was reading the NASA "doomsday" report earlier and I'm reminded of a Robert Heinlein quote:

"A dying culture invariably exhibits personal rudeness. Bad manners. Lack of consideration for others in minor matters."

I guess we should be worried after all.

Probably because I am right handed, and change all my keybinds on all my characters also. It's far from discriminating against left handed players.

There will never be a preset that matches every players needs/wants.

Any concern for a player is their right to have and discuss. I was simply posting that I do not understand how it is discriminating against lefties. I have the right to voice my opinion as well.

I can understand why they make you rebind for each character. It only takes a minute or two to do, and there are some games where I would use different key-bindings for different characters. Which was really annoying on games that insisted on global keybinds. I had to rebind every time I switched characters. However, given the relatively small number of important things to bind to keys in this game, a global binding would probably be fine. It's not like its the kind of MMO that requires having 12 quickbars with 8 slots each scattered around your screen, plus target switch, target of target, etc.

I don't think it's discrimination, it's simply appealing to the majority. I use a controller and have mapped the controls how I want them to be, you can just change your bindings.

He's not saying the keybinds discriminate against left handed players exclusively, he's saying they're not much cop, and in his circumstances it's all the more obvious.

So you don't mind changing them for every character, that's great. For you. That freedom to voice an opinion everyone cherishes so much, could be must better spent improving things for other people instead of just knocking them down.

Maybe we should go into EU laws about software accessibility, we could have loads of arguments about why people who can't use normal input devices should wait in line, because it doesn't affect us.

You are correct, there isn't an exact setup. But there are profiles, or quick presets that can help make binding more efficient. I understand there may be only 4 or 5 binds that most people have to set, but I have to change almost all of them.

Again, I can use my mouse in my right hand. But I can play much better with my left. Why don't you right handers go learn to write with your left hand quick, it should only take a week or two...No. You wouldn't do that. I've used a computer this way since I was 5 years old. I am not changing.

There are mice, keyboards, and games being optimized for left handed people - ESO is going to a massive, massive game that is going to want to appeal to all gamers. It was just a heads-up that this could become an issue.

Apologies for voicing my opinion.

If you make it so 1 preset effects all your characters, then you will have players complain they need to change their keybinds each time they change characters(instead of just once at creation). Because they play different characters with different keybinds.

I'm not posting simply to "argue". I just don't see how taking a couple minutes to customize a setup once per character is that big a deal(again my opinion, others may think otherwise), especially when proposed change quite possibly could effect many many more players and creating a far bigger annoyance(every time they change characters).
