Lefties unite! Any official word?

Post » Sat Jun 19, 2010 12:43 am

One problem I am seeing with being able to be left handed would be the animation for archery,I dont see them making 2 different animations for some reason.

Yeah that part of what is bugging me, i was hoping to have left handed archery animation as well, but i suppose that would be asking for 2 much , so I'll keep it realistic and just hope for bashing with my shield arm in the right hand like i said.

My question is will there be key support for actual lefties? As in hotkey arrow pad?

Huh?

Left handed fighters, while perfectly able to fight left handed, often learn to use the unusual left handed technique to keep their opponents off balance. Weapons training often assumes that the opponent will be using the right hand as well. A left handed fighter forces the opponent to change their stances, strikes and parries to compensate attacks coming from INSIDE the defensive arc, rather than the outside, as normal.

I'd like to see some left handed enemies. Hopefully with the new combat system it'll require you to approach the fight differently.

I have a hard time believing that a left handed person can defeat a bandit, let alone a dragon

Don't see why not--a right handed person would be at a slight disadvantage, since he is used to defending against other right handers, while the left handed person would be very acquainted with fighting right handers.

Lol I have personally slain a dragon by throwing a bandit at him. With my left hand. I went on to throw the corpse of said dragon at more bandits, again with my left hand. there doesn't really seem like a reason to not do this, as the left hand will have all the single handed attack animations anyways.

Like this thread. I've been asking this question for quite some time!
Is it wrong for a hero to be left handed?!

I'm actually ambidextrous, but I do most things left handed. I always thought it'd be cool to be a lefty in a game but it never happens! The world is against us. :cookie:
I'm kind of excited if it will be an option for us, but in reality it doesn't *really matter if we can't be lefties in the game. ... Ill be happy when it comes out.

Yes it's about time we had issues of class struggle and dialectical materialism in TES, a subject sadly lacking up to now. And not once has there been an anarcho-syndicalist commune in...oh. I see, it's about handedness not...well never mind , er comrades. :whistling:

This issue has been bugging me for ages. It just seems unfair and unrealistic when a game tells you, "Nuh uh! You can't do that! Sword goes right, shield goes left!""

This is right, nobody should feel left out.

For some reason, this statement made me giggle. I find all this handedness to be funny. xD

But in all seriousness, I would totally agree to the "ambidextrous" perk and choosing handedness.

does this realy matter whether u see it in one hand or not?

sort of. my dominant eye is my left eye so when i do archery i shoot "left handed". morrowind does it like i do it so i noticed it when oblivion switched to the right hand method. however, afterwhile you just get used to it. it might be different for melee weapons since you tend to use them more often and they are in front of your face for longer periods of time.

I'm right handed, but the thought always occurred to me. In previous games, it would be too much work to implement it, but now that they've added a dual wield system, so it's a fine opportunity to add this feature. Being able to choose your handedness at the beginning and being able to gain the ambidextrous perk sounds like a fantastic idea, and only adds to the immersion of a role-playing game. I've always wanted to play a left-handed swordsman, just for the hell of it.

sweet! I have always wanted games to make left handed wielding option!
I hope being a lefty will make people seem a little less sure of you, since that was how it was back then. give more immersion!

Such feature would be a waste of developer time best spent adding multiplayer coop :P

Honestly, for sure there's nothing wrong with a left handed hero and nothing wrong with people wanting to play as one. People wanting to play as a left handed because they are left handed themselves on the other hand are kinda missing the point of playing something you cannot be I guess :P

I wouldn't mind playing anything really I don't care. But spending development time for, let's admit, a useless feature to allow you to choose if you are left or right handed is a big no no unless they can do that very cheaply.

I for one would love to have the opportunity to play as a left handed character, would also be neat if you would run into the odd character in-game who were also left handed.

I'm glad this thread has seen some excellent support and recommendation from all us gamers.

Yes it would be nice to run into the occasional NPC being left handed.
Yes it would be cool if lefties got some kind of bonus against non lefties.
Yes it would be awesome for an ambidextrous perk for us to choose.

All were asking for is weapon in left hand, shield on right hand.

But we are FAR from having this verified yet.

A screen shot could be reversed by accident. Unless there is writing on the screen shot to show it wasn't reversed.

However nowhere in the game-play video (hereafter refereed to as "vid") does it show any Lefties. NONE.

All of the weapons (sword) sheaths in the vid are on the left side of the body on the hip implying right handed.

All magic casting is done (by either hand or impliment) in the vid with the left hand, again weapon in right.

Besdies the main PC who holds his sword in his right hand and shield in the left through the whole video

Here are some Examples (a very thorough inspection of the game-play video); SPOILER waring if you haven't seen the video yet

The Imperial Legion guard @ 1:21 in the vid his sword is sheathed on the left side of his body.

The hill giant @ 1:26 in the vid his one handed giant club is flung over his shoulder being held in the right hand.

The third person perspective @ 1:28 shows the PC walking with his sword is sheathed on the left side of his body, and an
The Imperial Legion guard walking towards him again with his sword is sheathed on the left side of his body.

Another third person perspective @ 1:29 shows this time a bow in the left hand implying plucking the bowstring with the right.

@1:31 we see some sort of magic being prepared against a frost troll again magic from the left hand, sword in the right

@1:32 we see a third person perspective of a stealth character doing a rather cool special sneak attack slitting a person throat the left hand grabbing him the dagger in the right slicing.

@1:33 an axe is thumped down on the head of some creature cutting it off again Axe in right hand, shield in left

@1:34 magic staff shots a ranged magic shot , again in left hand, a sword in the right hand.

@1:35 we see something even more revealing, a third person vid of the PC attacking, doing an awesome spinning attack sword in right hand, Dagger in Left. his opponent sword in right hand, shield on left.

@1:36 we see magic casting but whats telling here is that the zombie enemies one in back is holding a sword in his right hand, another in front holds a sword in his right hand, and far left a zombie with a Beard! (cool) holds an axe in his right hand shield on his left.

@ 1:40 we see the PC (in some incredibly cool looking black armor) in third person drawing his sword again with his right hand and walking forward.

@1:41 we see first person the drawing of a bow with the right hand.

@1:43 we see something intriguing, magic cast being done WITH BOTH HANDS!!!, very interesting perhaps then casting could be done with only the right hand, since we know the animation is working for both hands in this magic casting scene. BTW the zombie in front is holding a war axe in his right hand and point to the PC (very cool looking)

@1:44 we see a very cool finishing move the left hand is empty holding the unfortunate fellow, the right hand plunging a sword through his stomach.

@1:46 we see third person stealthy character in Dwemer! ruins with a dagger in his right hand

@1:46 first person we see the PC attacking a giant freaky looking spider with a cool looking mace again with his right hand

are you seeing a common theme here?

The main weapon is ALWAYS in the right hand, so please don't tell me screen shots are enough to prove its in the game

The entire awesome game-play video shows not a single example of the primary weapon in the left hand, nor ever a shield held in the right, not on the PC, NPC's or monsters. None.

Which is why i would like to ask officially if we could please have Lefties in the game Bethesda, Thank you.

No one has any comments on my observations about not a single main weapon in the left hand?

As happy as everyone has been assuming its in the game, from the game-play vid its not in..yet.

Aye, Solidarity. Though I'm afraid it's all gone over the heads of most of the posters here. The young people of today, eh?

Though not being a left hander myself I fully support my left handed brothers - and sisters - in their just struggle against repression and the effects of a crypto-fascist gaming industry. It's the inalienable right of every man - and woman - to play this game left handedly.
