Lefties unite! Any official word?

Aye, Solidarity. Though I'm afraid it's all gone over the heads of most of the posters here. The young people of today, eh?

Heh, yeah that was my interpretation too, though that might be more of a British thing?

No one has any comments on my observations about not a single main weapon in the left hand?

As happy as everyone has been assuming its in the game, from the game-play vid its not in..yet.

By reading your observations about the gameplay trailer,it definitely doesnt look good for us lefties, but when really thinking about it,I dont see why not.If we can dual weild then that means that all the one-handed weapons and magic have an animation for the left hand already.
They are more than half way done, they just got to make animations for the shield, bow, and two handed weapons.Which really shouldnt be that hard considering you just copy what you have already for the right handed player and just adjust it for a left handed player.
I dont make games so this could be harder than I think.

Communists unite! No? Ok... *grumble*

Haven't they said that you can equip anything in any hand already? Isn't that a good sign that you poor lefties might get your wish granted?

Probably. Though the Pythons are meant to be well known in the US, aren't they? Or were.

One thing that's bugged me since Morrowind through to Fall3 how about giving us a the ability to use our LEFT hand for weapons.

Since we can now dual wield , can we now equip our one handed weapon in our LEFT hand and our shield in our right?

Seems like we should be able to with the new combat system just would like to get some official word since i prefer to make my character as close as possible to how i am in the real world.

no. why don't you try NOT being left handed you spawn of satan? death to all left handers!

Yeah the only thing that made me hopeful was seeing animation for spell casting with both hands, so maybe its a start. Honestly it felt, odd looking at all that footage and i got the impression the programs consider the left hand the "off" hand for smaller weapons spells and shields always go on the left, arrrgh really annoying.

I beg of thee Bethesda grant us lefties this one wish, must we endure more injustice!

The Game informer article states plainly that any combination of weapons/spells can be equipped, including two single handed weapons. I think that makes it pretty clear that you can use a single weapon in your left hand. I'm all for it, being a left hander myself.

Well that's great new if its true. Nothing in the gameplay vid showed any of that, could be no one thought to switch their primary weapon. Daggers when duel wielded are always on the left in the vid, so are shields, et. all.

In addition that no NPC, nor monster had a weapon in there left hand seems odd to me, but if i get to shield bash with the right and swing a sword with the left, that's fine with me. Again SOME sort of official acknowledgment would be nice.

Yes the GI article is the closest thing to confirming what we want, but I still dont think we can flat out be left handed(as far as using a bow or holding a two handed weapon). There is no info on that at all,but here is the quote from the GI article none the less.

"The core change is the addition of two-hands/two options approach to combat.Every weapon or spell in the game can be equiped to either hand at any time, leading to limitless combinations of attack options.Dual weild two of the same weapon,or place a dagger in one hand and a mace in the other.Fight defensively with a shield in your left arm and a crackling ball of electricity in your right.Set two completely different spells in either hand,or put the same spell in both hands, letting you combine the spell to extraordinary effect. The choice is yours".

As long as I can put the shield in my right hand and a sword in my left hand I will be happy too.Sounds promising for that atleast.

If it's not too much of an issue to code in, I'd like for the choice to be present. What I would really like to see however would be left-handed NPCs, some of which we encounter in combat of course, so that things get mixed up every now and then ;)

Nerd Time!

The reason right handed weapon use is so prevalent is because it's true. Even a swordsman who is left handed often (but not always) trains with his weapon in his right hand has to do with stance. In a swordsman's stance, the right side, and weapon is presented to your opponent, keeping your heart back in a more defensible position. The more 'squared' sword and board stances also put emphasis in the shield on the left arm, to better protect your heart.

Florentine fighters tend to lead with the right for similar reasons, and two handed weapon fighters tend to have the distance to be square with your opponent, but then, the right hand is your 'leading hand' (the hand higher up on the weapon, which controls it's swing) also happens to be the right.

Left handed fighters, while perfectly able to fight left handed, often learn to use the unusual left handed technique to keep their opponents off balance. Weapons training often assumes that the opponent will be using the right hand as well. A left handed fighter forces the opponent to change their stances, strikes and parries to compensate attacks coming from INSIDE the defensive arc, rather than the outside, as normal.

This evolved into modern weapon usage, where training to shoot right handed evolved from the use of swords and knives.

This is false even for picktooth play.
Its bullS.... since the heart is on the midlle of the chest under the stermun protection.
This is a romantic medecinless approach, even because when in combat, if you have your lung pierced your as good as dead, exactly the same as if you had your heart pierced.

Wenever you get your pickthooth foreplay or you enter a more medieval gameplay all your reasons bear no relevance, left handed learning to use right hand are loosers by nature.
First because they loose sensibility and dextery by fighting the "wrong hand"
Second because they will have to relearn body balance because during all their lives the used themselves to balance themselves in accordance to the most proeficient side: The left one
Third Same as above but for reflexes, brain arm coordination.
Fourth because they simply enter the righties natural playground
Fifth when leftie you are used to fight righties, while they arent used to fight leftie since only 10% of peole (in average) are leftie so you got an advantage. So a leftie unbalancing, fooling a rightie is much more comon than the opposite, considering both oponents more or less the same caliber.

As for shooting being leftie or rightie is totally irrelevent, you have to learn to shoot with your dominent eye, whatever hand your used to. Diference in acuracy soar up as far as 35% when someone that used the wrong eye start to use the dominent eye for aiming, as the recessive eye imput a way higher degree of disalignement from the 2 eyes open (Unless ambidextrous eyesighting, which i dont know any case). When you close your dominent eye and aim with the recessive, you will imput way more degrees of lateral deviation than with the dominant eye that can be down to 0 degree of deviation. The more your dominent eye is accurate the less your recessive eye is accurate, and your brain cannot fully correct this deviation.

And shooting only evolved to the right because as i sayd above, 90% of the people are righties. Or you gonna say that f-16,f-22,f-35 cockpits were designed thinking about renaissance swordplay ?
It makes absolutely no sense.

@ toolpuppy That IS re-assuring , i do remember seeing that quote. Lets hope that the game-play sample they either forgot to show that or it was an earlier build where you could not do that.

@ raminus NPC and monsters being left handed would be awesome as well, a nice break from the tedium. Wouldn't SOME zombies and skeletons be they way they were in life?
