[IDEA] I Am Legend

Post » Wed Oct 27, 2010 4:37 am

I got the idea after roaming around with Dog Meat.

I had recently watched I am Legend and loved the concept, and I really loved the connection between Robert (Will Smith) and his Dog. Then, there was the idea of building an urban environment like New York which really appealed to me. It would be a great bit of practice for modelling, which I have been learning for a while now.

If I am to go ahead with this, I will need help. At very least, I need someone who can work well with height maps or large areas of land. I will need some modelling help, as I am only just learning.

What I plan to include -
New area to explore - New York
New, unique interiors
New creatures - Infected
New Story Line Based on 'I Am Legend'
New Companion - Sam (German Shepard)

If you would like to help, please let me know. I really do hope to go ahead with this.

How about you start by making a house, and after that you can see how keen you are to do an entire worldspace. :)

Same with creating companions, making new creatures and the like. It's all well and good talking about it, but the project you are describing is the sort which could easily take several years to finish, assuming you spend several hours on it every single day. I'd suggest starting with something basic, like maybe the boarded-up house from I Am Legend or just the creatures themselves, and then work from there. Sorry to be such a dream crusher.

I agree. Start small. You need incremental goals you can look proudly on achieving along the way or you'll get discouraged at the monumental project and never finish.

Try making his house, or the video store, and go from there, adding the street it's on and more buildings, etc.

Of course if you do each small project that has to do with the actual idea in mind, by the end of it all you'll have a lot of practice and finished a lot of work.

@ Donkey_Cavity
I understand what you mean, and I will start it off like that, but I have been doing a few small projects recently and thought it was time to move on to bigger horizons.
I'm already starting work with a re-texture of dog meat to look like Sam. I'll post some screens when I'm done.

You underestimate the magnitude of work required to do even basic things, but I wish you luck.

I am Legend was an interesting movie, though it seemed quiet and peaceful compared to the Wasteland of Fallout 3. The movie was a remake, and an earlier version called The Omega Man was staged in Los Angeles, I think. It doesn't seem as if it would really be necessary to model New York City in order to make a mod with a similar story. He could have a crib near DC couldn't he?

I agree with the other posts and encourage you to avoid the War and Peace Syndrome. It is a giant leap from simple practice mods to the Most Epic Mod of All Time, though it is surprising how many people try to make that great leap of faith. It must be a natural impulse or the heady intoxication of seeing your first few imaginings come to life in a game. If only modding was as easy as imagining.

Wow! I was just thinking of something like this!

I'd like to help out, I can do interiors and exteriors. I don't know if you are going to use prometheuses heightmap, (ie. The above link) but I might be able to dabble in heightmap creation.

If you do use the flooded new York city mod as a resourse, it would make it much easier and we could concenetrate more on interiors and other ideas.

Just drop me a pm if you want my help. :)

i'd love to see a mod like this come to be but less like the 2007 film (which shouldn't even have the name I Am Legend) and more like the book. why is no one interested in recreating the book? it salways the bloody 2007 film. which pales in comparison

Better reference material. Books don't have pictures, so making anything would be subjective to your personal interpretation of what the setting looked like.

Probably because many more people have seen the movie than read the book? It's easier to watch a bad movie than read a bad book... if a movie svcks, you've wasted a couple hours. If a book svcks, you wasted a few days or weeks of free time, depending on how you read.

I think Pintocat meant that if you know nothing about a book and nothing about a movie, you'll watch the movie because you will not have wasted as much time if it turns out to be bad. They weren't talking about any specific book.
