let companions die

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 7:53 pm

what do you think.
in fallout nv companions couldn't die and I hated it. I know it seems like a stupid complaint but it would just make sense. So what do you think

sould companions die or sould they just faint.

If you play on hardcoe mode, your companions can die.

And, yes, your companions should always be able to die.

Although Fawkes wasn't hard to find, you found him as a part of the main quest and got him to follow you if you had good karma which most people probably had on their first playthrough.

NV had it right - Die optional.

Lets face it, a lot of players will simply reload on NPC death anyway.

Lets face it, a lot of players will simply reload on NPC death anyway.

Not always, Ian, Katja and Tycho died in Mariposa for me and I continued on.
Marcus and Vic died in Tanker and I continued on.
Jericho died in Deathclaw Sanctuary and I continued on.
And Arcade died when trying to enter Nellis and I continued on.
If I see it as a fitting death then I move forward and let them die.
Dying shouldn't be optional IMO.
Too much handholding, even if people just reload anyway.

I'm one of those who reload a game when my companion dies, it's so immersion breaking when they do because they always die a stupid death. Hey, under heavy enemy fire, let's stand up and shoot at them or run up to them and beat them instead of ducking for cover. In fact, it's not the death that breaks the immersion but the NPC's stupid behavior. An hour ago, I lost Rex for the trillionth time and I just thought "[censored] it" and moved on.

I wish NPC's would have a much better AI, and when they die, they die in style. Then I'd shed a tear, thinking "that's my boy/girl/dog" and avenge them!

I like how NV does it were in hard Core mode companions can die. I think in normal mode they should stay alive.

Voted yes (at least in the same way F:NV does it). Having them not die makes them feel artificial, boring and uncareable.

I think they should just die outright none of this XXX is unconcious depending on what mode you play on. Although like savagebeatings said, they'd need better AI.

It should always be a toggable option either way, no matter what "mode" you're playing in. Not everyone enjoys playing with severe "realism" - I don't think it's handholding either, it's just playstyle preference. I know this is a hardcoe rpg forum for most folks, but there's a lot of casual players too. Not a hard option to implement, keeps everyone happy, and these are typically single-player games where what another player does doesn't affect YOU, so options are good.

Also, as someone else mentioned, as long as AI is as simple, stupid, and glitchy as it has been since the dawn of computer gaming, companion npc perm-death should not be mandatory. It's one thing to have them die a glorious death during a pitched battle, another to have them die because their stupid follow-path-finding caused them to fall/glitch into cavern full of enemies.

P.S. - I do think the NV 'fainting' thing was a bit cheesy tho - they should have at least had a requirement for revival, like a potion you had to buy/carry or something. Or at least had to use a doctors bag on them...
