Let's have a toggle on everything!

Post » Mon Jun 13, 2011 6:04 pm

While reading through several threads about if this or that should be in the game I noticed a distinct similarity in most of them: Someone saying make it toggleable. (yeah it's a word :stare: ). While there is nothing wrong with the politically neutral solution to the problems, it does lead to a rather unwanted event if it happens too often.

:nope: That's not what we want for Skyrim, is it?

Now, go on ahead and discuss if something should be in or not, but remember that making it toggleable is not the solution.

Spoiler
Should making everything toggleable be toggleable? :bonk:

Options are always good, specially in a sandbox game like TESV.

Making something toggleable is the solution.

Are you actually worried about the options menu being too large or is this a joke?

nah nobody wants that but it doesn't hurt to express personal opinions as to what should or should not be toggled features. Discussion does not dictate the final product

That's obviously an extreme of having toggles. The only toggle I want is Quest Markers, because those are serious game changers for some.

there are too many little things there, all the major stuff should be optional (blood splatter, finishing moves, "hardcoe" mode if they have it, quest markers, etc.)

Only subtitles, blood and hard-core mode.
Everything else should be either in or out. I'm leaving it up to Bethesda to choose whether it's in or out.

EDIT: Totally forgot about it, but IF they have a slow-motion kill-cam whenever you kill an enemy, that should be togglable (like in Fallout: New Vegas).

Too many options are bad. It shows bad game design imo and makes you think... "Eh who is making the game? The player by selecting a bunch of gameplay options or the developer who has decided them from the start?"

A few options for really intrusive and controversial things could be very good though (and sometimes almost necessary), as long as they're not too many.

Id say a good idea would be to have many of these options coincide directly with the difficulty slider.

Actually , that looks fantastic. I would love to see a game where it's completely customizable for your style of playing. It's a single player game after all and who cares how others want to play it. I believe at some point someone will create an "all game" something that can build itself to your specifications based on what kind of game you want to play. Sure, it's not everyone's cup of tea. Some people enjoy unbendable rules and think that everything should be set in stone and if you don't like it tough. But with games selling to wider and wider markets and budgets for game climbing and climbing.. it would seem (at the moment) the best strategy would be to come up with something that you could sell to the widest of ranges and earn the most money from. The only way to do that is with infinite amounts of options.

Map markers, hardcoe mode, blood decals, finish moves, quest markers are the only things that should be toggleable

Toggled UI is confirmed (according to UESP), children (possibly, but I can't judge on that yet), and hardcoe mode (if included), definitely.

Pretty sure quest markers have been removed in favour of clairvoyance (watch G4 trailer), which IS optional.

Otherwise, mod it. And if you can't play it on PC, then buy one capable of it.

I don't even have a computer, since mine broke, and I am not able to install anything on this one. Indeed, even if I could, it would not run Skyrim, so I'm getting it on Xbox. As such, I won't be able to mod, and I'll have to trust that a professional game developer whose previous outings I've enjoyed thoroughly will be able to make good decisions about its game during a 5 year development cycle.

EDIT: Typos

I love the fact that is says page 1 of 50

Thumbs up to whoever made this picture. Big thumbs up.

It's very true toggles aren't always the solution, but sometimes they're the best solution for some really intrusive and controversial things.
Imo, things like quest markers, compass icons, crosshair (as usual), and also finishing moves... since a lot of people (including me) don't seem very happy of certain features of it.

Finally someone made a thread about this. Be prepared for 48 more pages of haters saying that we should get hundreds of options. That's right...there's more options than posts (according to the image).

Options...options...and more options! :banghead:

Looks like you want more options than needed too! Quest marker toggle? No. Compass? No. Crosshairs? Yes. Finishing moves? No. Although I agree that I don't like the idea of finishing moves, we shouldn't be able to toggle it. Mods should take care of the extra stuff that we don't like.
