Let's hear it for the PC community!

Post » Tue Jun 29, 2010 7:58 am

PC player here, been watching this game for well over a year now. I can hardly believe it's about to come out in just over a week. I am 29 years old and I am excited and giddy like I was 12 years old.

So, let's hear it PC people; who's getting the PC version? Where you getting it? Steam, Amazon, Gamestop etc?

How do you think the community for this game will be?

Do you think it will turn into a sort of niche' community like TF2?

Do you think this game will be competitive? Will there be clan matches? Tournaments?

Do you think this game will be too consolized to reach a proper PC skill ceiling?

At best, I think this game will be an incredible FPS with the potential to be played for months on end. If the community develops nicely, I think there is a strong possibility this could become a hugely competitive game based around strong teamwork and strong individual skill.

At worst, I fear this game could be too consolized and oversimplified. I fear that the combat and gunplay may turn out to be simply not exciting enough. I hope I am wrong, but the only way to find out is to play the game!

I'm pretty sure that this game will be amazing for PC, and given that I am bound to the PS3, I'm feeling an envy-fueled hatred for all you PC gamers. :D

As I don;t have a PS3 or an Xbox, I guess I'm getting the PC Version :D

More than likely from teh cheapest place. Possibly Game. Unlikely to be Steam, even though I like the look of the Spec Ops pack - That being said, half the world will be getting it from there, so it will be kind of normal.

How do you think the community for this game will be?

I think it will be exactly as the L4D community before the game got nerfed and TF2 - before the 6million errors in the Hatless update

Do you think it will turn into a sort of niche' community like TF2?

TF2 isn;t that niche per say. It's not "as big" as others, but it's very healthy.

Do you think this game will be competitive? Will there be clan matches? Tournaments?

The clan I'm in are gearing up for a dedi server and 2-3 teams. Tournaments will no doubt happen and be held as it's a hell of a lot easier than on console to arrange, hold and run :)

Do you think this game will be too consolized to reach a proper PC skill ceiling?

Depends really what you define as a skill ceiling. Everyone talks/talked about CS1.6 being the true competative game, then CS:S - who knows. PErsonally, I'm more about having a laugh than dethowning Fatality :)

Agreed with the "At best" comments. However, in terms of "Over simplified" I don;t think you can get much simpler than CSS or TF2 or even L4D. They thrieved even though their concepts where somewhat limited and restrictive...imo of course. I think if you look at what they've done with over 50 potential loadouts and yet caped to 20 per character, it will be interesting to see what the "ultimate" combination is likely to be for each class.

I think Brink will be huge on PC, but the only thing now that I'm apprehensive of is in fact the skill ceiling. I fear that it may be far too low.

Oh, and whoever said that TF2 is niche needs to be hung, drawn, and quartered. <_<

Time to answer all your questions lol.

Who's getting the PC version?

Me me me!

Where you getting it? Steam, Amazon, Gamestop etc?
GAME, a UK retailer. Ordered a retail (boxes) copy as, even though I love Steam, I still prefer to hold physical copies :)

How do you think the community for this game will be?
Awesome, I hope. My site Brink Vault has high hopes for the community, both competitive and fun. We have great plans.

Do you think it will turn into a sort of niche' community like TF2?

TF2 is a niche community? Anyone I know that's played it loves it!

Do you think this game will be competitive? Will there be clan matches? Tournaments?
Ladders and tournaments, you just wait and see. I have plans :). And I hear Brink TV launches soon as well, that's pretty competitive.

Do you think this game will be too consolized to reach a proper PC skill ceiling?
I'm holding on to the fact SD is primarily a PC developer.

Getting it for PC from Amazon. I'm planning to go Security mostly (no problem playing as Resistance however,) so I want the Wal-Mart/Steam pre-order real bad, but I'm a lazy SoB whom doesn't want to go to Wal-mart nor do I want to go without a retail box. My internet is also fast enough to run games online if barely, but downloading multi gig games can take all night.

That and I prefer a revolver over the Hockler. Hockler would have won me over if the character used the fore-grip, but then it would be a true SMG I guess.

P.S. My plan is a wireless plan with a reported 1.4mbps DL speed (roughly 150Kbs average.) I'm just glad I'm grandfathered into an unlimited plan. Anymore all I see are 5gb a month plans. Ick. Can't get anything else but satellite out here though :(

This game's been in Steam's top sellers list for a while, but I don't know the actual numbers. I'm sure there'll be plenty.

I would purchase 2 copies for each of the content (I can live without DOOM, even if it is a childhood favorite) I just don't know if I can use the Xbox code for the Hockler and various Security items on the PC version. Mostly, I was intending to hand off that Xbox copy to a friend who is a CoD fiend. Course, he loves Borderlands too, so it's not like Brink is too big a leap for him either way (despite the differences.)

PC gamer here, primed and ready.

Bought it from Amazon, but I may cancel and buy it on Steam if the pre-load option pops up soon. (My college's bandwidth is pretty crappy and it would take days to download.)

I think the community will go through many stages. At first, it will seem like just another shooter and all kinds of people will flock to it. Then many people will be frustrated with it for various reasons which have already been discussed, and they will leave. The remaining players will be the ones who know Brink's innate quirks and philosophies and play it for Brink, not because it's FPS #572.

It may very well become a niche game. Because it's flown in under the radar until now, I don't think public awareness is at a high-enough level for it to start off with huge sales. I could be wrong, though.

There will definitely be clans and tournaments, and the competitive community is already planning their approach to this game. That being said, I really hope the competitive realm of this game does not corrupt the "for fun" realm -- just as Smash Bros. gameplay was forever altered by wavedashing, chain-grabbing and organizing characters into "tiers," I would be very unhappy if the competitive sphere came to define the gameplay behavior of everyone.

This is not a console port, luckily -- it was developed for each platform by different teams. As far as I know, it plays great on all three.

hello hello long time lurker first time poster :wavey:

Became a PC Gamer back when Descent came out and never looked back. I pre-ordered from Amazon so I could get the Psycho kit. I really need that sack to cover my face, as I had an unfortunate accident as a child with an automatic rice picker and it left me horribly disfigured :bonk:

I just wanna have fun again lol. SOF II was the last MP shooter I played that was truely fun (made me laugh a lot, even when I was getting my ass kicked). I'm hoping Brink will put some fun back in to PC Gaming for me. BRING ON NEXT TUESDAY! :gun:

Do you think this game will be too consolized to reach a proper PC skill ceiling?

I'm a little bit worried about this. The use of console controllers kind of forces game developers towards certain style of level design and movement, where reaction times and positioning play a bigger role than movement or target tracking skills. Fast, skill-based first person shooters like Quake or Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory are unplayable on console controllers because they require a level of precision that can be obtained only from mouse + keyboard combo. You can not circle strafe around your enemy and keep your aim at his head at the same time with a console controller.

Because of this multiplatform thing, the game is going to be a lot slower paced than ET for example. Combat distances are going to be shorter too, because trying to hit small, fast moving target with a console controller is just not fun. Old pc-style "skillful movement" with strafe-jumps and circle jump starts also has to be replaced with some kind of "push a button and something awesome will happen" -style gameplay mechanic, because it's pretty much impossible to do those trickjumps with console controller.

If you think that what I'm talking about is just trolling or pc-elitism, feel free to check out any Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory or Quake III frag movie from youtube and compare the gameplay with pretty much any multiplatform shooter. You'll see that everything is just so much faster even if targets are smaller.

I pre-ordered the game from Direct2drive. Bought a cheap ATI5850 videocard too and overclocked my old core2duo warhorse to 4GHz. My body is ready.

Indeed, as you mentioned Aldous the combat distances look very, very small and not particularly varied.

It must be possible to strafe and keep your aim, if you get the balance of the d-pad or joysticks or d-sticks or whatever they call them right. Just very difficult and not very practical.

Even saying all that, it's still a matter of opinion. I have a friend whom has never really played FPS's with a mouse and keyboard and would absolutely blow at them trying to, however he can run circles around others (especially me) with a controller and his cross-hair will never waver. It's a matter of experience and preference. The age old belief that mouse > controller really has no merit besides personal opinion. I prefer the mouse myself, he likes a controller.

Now, what the keyboard has over an Xbox controller is about 86 more buttons to press, give or take.

There is merit in saying that a mouse is better than a controller for quick precise aiming, it is just the physical nature of the hardware, not the limitations of the player. Some people do prefer to play on consoles, which is fair enough as you know everyone else is playing on the same hardware spec, however the PC is my preference for FPS games.
