Let's make a Ninja!

So I'm not as new to Oblivion now, I've had thirteen characters all deleted the same or next day they were created. I just get very bored with character very quickly. I have been told time and time again that stealth is a fun and interesting way to go, so I tried it. The problems that made me delete him (I know i have an addiction) are: 1 That I can't finish a fight in a situation where there just is no way of being stealthy, and 2 that after getting very far into the Dark Brotherhood (working with Lucien directly) I was too weak to continue (my armor and weapons... and skills).

So here is my request from you lovely people.

1. The build.
2. Where to go from there!

You decide the race
Sign of the Thief
Agility and Speed

Majors:
Blade
Marksman
Illusion
Armorer
Restoration
Mysticism
Acrobatics

I personally don't power level, or spam skills. I would concentrate on these minors: Sneak, Alchemy

Shazam.

I know how fast sneak can level on it's own. But someone told me to choose alchemy as a major skill, choose race as Argonian (which is sweet because i always choose argonians) for the alchemy boost, and then choose the birthsign Mage for another alchemy boost. Is this a good thing to do? Wouldn't i suffer from not having the +10 in Agility, Speed, and Luck?

Well, it depends... If you plan on using a ton of poisons, go for it. But, my personal preference would be to keep The Thief as the birthsign.

Choosing Mage is ok. It would give you more magicka for those Illusion spells and male Argonians start with high Agi and Spd anyway. Magic spec is a really bad idea though since it would make your stealth skills all start lower and worse, level more slowly, while making even a few potions would level alchemy (and you!) fast. I really dislike Alchemy as a major but it's ok if you use it very judiciously. Btw wood elves also get an alchemy boost but if you prefer Argonian go for it.

Why use Mysticism, Illusion, Restoration, and Armorer?

Illusion is useful for stealth characters.
The other 3 are to make sure that the level doesn't rise too fast, thus resulting in enemies who can beat you easier.

So does that mean i can raise alchemy and sneak without leveling at all? I hope so.

Armorer is for: Not only getting a head start to reach to level 50 (when you can repair magical weapons and armor), but also to help your Endurance in the early levels, which directly affects how much new HP you will have when you level up.

Illusion is for: All the wondrous spells you will need to get into the places you need to be. Illusion is by far the most powerful magic school imo.

Mysticism: Detect Life, Soul Trap.... what's not to like? Plus, it adds to your Intelligence....

Restoration: Levels very slowly. Why not put it as a major?

Yes to the alchemy and sneaking. You will get bonuses to your Agility and Intelligence. Even as minors, these skills rocket up for me. I only use Alchemy when I need it, I do use a lot of potions and poisons, but never spam restore fatigue potions. I make what I need, and stop for a while. I sneak a lot. I can one-hit kill all my bow shots (we're talking human targets only) when I'm sneaking.

I like the Thief Birthsign. This is what I've found with Luck: cost of your spells (magicka-wise) goes down. When your magic skills are at 100, raises in Luck decrease the magicka cost of my CUSTOM spells only, not the vanilla spells in game. Since I mostly use custom spells, and those spells are devastating destruction touch ones, the lower magicka cost is wondrous for my mage, as well as for my ronin.

Just one thing about luck: I think its benefits decrease the closer ur magic skill gets to 100. AFAIK, spells based on Destruction 100 get no benefit whether luck is 50 or 100 (s.o. pls confirm / deny).

Also, I tried enjoying to play as some sort of ninja, but never found appropriate clothing (ie., clothing to enchant...). I also did not like any of the light armour available (except DB), and personally prefered to go unarmored (btw, there is a mod Galerion that allows u to use some sort of unarmored skill tied to ur acrobatics, check it if u want).

And last, I saw my ninja as someone using a lot of bow and shortblade (which u can do fine), the only thing i did not like was that all blades r tied to the Blade skill which was governed by Strength.

IIRC, my build went like this (I did not care about efficient leveling, in which case u should ditch security and put in Alteration or Resotration):

Spoiler

Race: Breton (or Dark Elf)
Sign: Shadow (or Thief)
Specialise: Agility, Speed
Majors: Sneak, Security, Marksman, Block, Alchemy, Illusion, Blade

This is pretty close to my favorite Oblivion build that I've created thus far. It's built more or less with 5/5/5 efficient leveling in mind but I've had no problem role playing with it too. I put it in a spoiler button to save space because I tend to ramble.

Spoiler

Race: Bosmer - Mostly for marksman bonus but also for alteration, sneak, acrobatics and alchemy. Argonians, khajiit and dunmer are aslo good choices but I like the bosmers' marksman.
Specialty: Stealth - gives you a nice starting bonus to marksman (which should I will be keeping as a minor) and stealth
Fave Attributes: Agility (for crazy awsome bow skills) Endurance (endurance because its the only attribute that "needs" to be leveled up early)
Sign:
- Thief - Mostly for the luck bonus. luck makes everything better and is hard to come by. but the speed bonus is nice too. Agility is going to be high enough without help.
Or
- Lady - As mentioned above endurance it the only attribute that "needs" to be leveled up early so I usualy prefer the lady for that purpose.
Majors:
- Blade - When ranged fails (see minors below) get 'em up close.
- Sneak - Makes your ranged attacks "pop"
- Armorer - Repair your bow and blade and control your leveling (reapair every piece of equipment you see to power level and only use when necesary otherwise)
- Illusion - Awsome stealth spells and many other nice effects
- Alteration - Gives you abilities like open (which can replace security at times) and shield (which can replace armor if used effectively)
- Mysticism - Detect life can be a real life saver sometimes and telekinesis can be useful for stealing and reaching things
- Athletics - If you try to use marksman a lot you will want to be able to run fast so your enemies can't hit you. I like to fight with bows at melee range by running circles around my opponents while lodging arrow after arrow into them.

Minors (of importance):
- Marksman - Use this as your main weapon type. It helps to keep your primary form of attack as a minor because it slows down how fast you level up compaired to the number of skill levels you get, giving you a higher multiplier.
- Alchemy - It levels up way too fast to be a major so keep it a minor and use it a lot for a high intelligence multiplier to fuel your illusion and alteration spells
- Security - This levels up fast enough by it's self besides after you do a certain quest for a certain godlike being, this skill becomes moot. With marksman as well, your agility will fly
- Heavy Armor - use this as a minor to increase your endurance without wasting levels. And as mentioned somewhere above, it levels up pretty fast anyway.
- Acrobatics - it levels up pretty quickly so it's good for speed. Speed is needed for the same purposse as athletics.

Other stats:
- Strength - I use marksman almost exclusively if I can. Blade ends up being mostly for leveling up. Strength isn't really that important to me. I travel light and am not afraid to use feather.
- Willpower - You won't be using spells like a mage would be so you wont be needing to be casting them rapid-fire or anything. If you decide that you do want to do that there's still destruction and restoration to train with as minors.
- Personality - Simple enough. Just use speechcraft to make merchants like you before you deal with them. If you run out of merchant just start using it on anybody else. Or purposly fail barters to make them like you less so you can start over. Illusion helps too.
- Luck - Start with the thief birthsign. Other than that... Good luck.

closing notes:
I'd start by maxing out endurance, agility and intelligence first. They will likely increase quickly. After that I would prioritise intelligence. Just be sure to hold off on the speechcraft until at least two of them are maxed out. I usualy do personality after that because its easy but do whatever you want.

My most sucessfull stealth character build would probably be:

Stealth Assassin

*Attributes
-Agility
-Optional *(I recomend either Strength or Speed)

*Race
-Bosmer(Male) *(Just a suggestion. Race isn't that important).

*Major Skills
-Sneak
-Marksman
-Light Armor
-Blade/Blunt*(Depending on what you prefer)
-Security
-Athletics/Acrobatics *(Either one of them).
-Alchemy

The last skill is optional, however alchemy would be the most usefull one(second being Illusion)

*Birthsign
For this one you got 2 usefull options:
-The Shadow: Great for tricky situations where you need to get away somehow.
-The Thief: Gives you some nice kickstart bonuses.

With this class you should always try to get a sneak attack at your first shot/slash. Always hotkey your blade/mace in case you miss the shot/you get to close. Also, mobility is key to your survival so don't wear heavy armor.

Have Fun!

Im usually making "one-class" characters like my character Zammy, Mad Monkey and Marth.(Im from sweden, original name is APAPAPAPA.) Mad monkey is good at shooting people with a bow, actually never used a blade. Zammy, is rather skillful with a blade He's never used a bow. Marth is a mage, never used either blade or bow. <_< I got other, but they are more hybrid, maybe some other time.
