Let's Plays, are there any decent ones?

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 11:18 pm

So I was trying to find a *good* Lets Play of FNV, with someone playing on hardcoe and doing it right, i.e. not messing up his SPECIAL, with a proper and thoughtful build up of skills and perks, and who covers at least the majority of quests.
So far, I haven't been successful at all. Since i'm tired of searching, I decided to ask the all knowledgeable forum for a hint

Lolno. They're all horribad, skip through the dialog and yell "stupid glitchy game" when a Deathclaw oneshots them.

Look we even made fun of them once: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1242541-thank-you-lonesome-road-for-hysterical-lets-play-deaths/

The best I know of is culveyhouse (he's in that thread there, he's the one exploring the Courier's Mile and saying "OOOHHH SHHHHHHHHHHHHHIII-" when he realizes he's boned). He at least plays very hard hardcoe and is decent as a player, though at times he can make stupid mistakes and at times he does get impatient with the dialog.

Personal preference my man.

Let's plays can also be useful to find out different ways to go at your character build, earning money and other useful gameplay strategies. It is also a good way to find out if a DLC is good enough.

I would honestly LOVE to see half the people on the forums, who claim to be complete badasses, do a hardcoe playthrough on Very Hard. Not that I think it can't be done or anything, I just don't believe some of the people on this forum.

Yeah, culveyhouse does good let's play videos. His New Vegas one is the best I've seen, and the Skyrim one is good too. The best thing about his videos is that all of the routine looting, terminal hacking, lockpicking, load screens are done off-camera. So you only get proper game time.

It's written rather than a video, but I hear that the 'Failing Fallout' blog is pretty fun.

Also the author is really likable.

And handsome….

I may be biased...

You calling me a liar? :stare:

It's really not that hard, with the proper build and setup. My character that survived had 10 Luck and 10 Endurance, so yeah, theoretically had the "best defense in the game." After that, it's just knowing what tools are available and knowing how to use them. Use armor piercing rounds, use med-x, use Turbo, and personally my character was also skilled with speech, so a lot of the tough fights (Brotherhood of Steel firing squad comes to mind) can be skipped. Really by the time I got to Honest Hearts, I had Turbo hotkeyed; it was far too valuable and probably saved my life more times than I can count. I remember a Yao Guai in particular that spawned RIGHT on top of me where Turbo came in handy, and I was so intent on completing EVERYTHING (hate to have simply beaten the game not ever knowing if I could've survived the Courier's Mile for example) that I walked the Divide twice (second time to find skill books) and got jumped by a deathclaw. Luckily I was paranoid enough that I had Med-X injected nonstop, so I survived the hit, downed every drug I could (Turbo included) and killed the damn thing before it got another hit in.

Though yeah, I've had characters fail Dead-is-Dead, too. The character's build IS important. Low endurance is gonna get you killed, and I personally think low speech skill or low luck (5 or below) is gonna get to you eventually, as well.

Yes check out CulveyHouse, he does his "let's play" series very well, going over everything(he's currently doing a guide on skyrim if your interested)

As for why we want to watch other people play a game... I dunno it's entertaining to me and atleast 3000 other regular viewers on his channel. Why wouldn't you want to watch playthroughs?

I'd do one, if I had a microphone... but if you heard me with a microphone, you'd probably hear a lot of "OFHAWWWWWWWWWWWWK" 's along the videos.

CulveyHouse is my favorite.

He goes through everything you will ever need to know about any game he's played.

He deserves a lot more subscribers for the work he puts into it.

Here's a link-> http://www.youtube.com/user/culveyhouse?feature=g-user-u

I remember that thread, "This is glitchy as [censored] I shouldn't be dying in one hit!"

But yeah, most let's play videos svck, 90% of them either skip through all the dialogue or just fail miserably at playing the game.

I remember SSoHPKC doing some decent let's play videos for Fallout 3 and New Vegas; he never skipped dialogue, he wasn't too bad at the game, and his voice wasn't annoying. You don't know how many let's play/instructional videos about using Fallout: New Vegas with mods I watched that were narrated by high voiced 11 year-olds who had no idea how to do anything in the game. :swear:

Actually he is one of the dudes whose vids I've seen before I opened this thread  He's horrible. Skips dialogue, has no real clue what he's doing, and the best of all was his reasoning about why FNV is worse than Fallout 3 and not worth the full price: Because of perks being available only every other level, which makes leveling suppsedly uninteresting, yuck.
According to him, the concept of a RPG is becoming an unstoppable machine, that can do anything and everything(going from FO3, he probably expects that by level 12 latest).
At that point I just thought, *go back playing Black Ops, suits you better, and I'm not gonna waste any further time with your vids*

Yes check out CulveyHouse, he does his "let's play" series very well, going over everything(he's currently doing a guide on skyrim if your interested) As for why we want to watch other people play a game... I dunno it's entertaining to me and atleast 3000 other regular viewers on his channel. Why wouldn't you want to watch playthroughs?

You mean, he's passing by everything, right? Clicked on a random video, so there he was running around in the Nipton town Hall, talking about *if you're short on money, just pick up everything you find, yaddayadda*.
So far, so good. Moments later he found himself standing before a toolbox, opens it, and it appears to have all the ingredients for a WRK. Pretty handy considering the fact that his equipment was far away from being in good condition....you might think.
Not so him. Instead of gladly picking that up, and explaining his viewers the importance of these items, he just called it junk he doesn't need, and went on. Gosh :verymad: What a competent walkthrough, no really...
But the stupidity doesn't end there. He took quite a beating from the Legion Mongrels, nothing to be ashamed of. #
But obviously he didn't understand the principles of the hardcoe mode since he was still hot keying Stimpacks like it was Fallout 3.
To make it even worse, he then started reasoning about how to get new Stimpacks fast, so that he could heal himself again. It is that bad as his inventory was not only full of food and Sarsaparillas, but he had also bumped his Survival skill quite a bit already. But obviously it didn't come to his mind to actually utilize on that and just heal with these items. At that point I had to bail out. Oh, and he skips dialogue, too.

Kinda agree, for FNV. Some games are fun to watch other people play. New Vegas is not that game, imo.

I think FNV is a perfect game to watch, as it offers so many different ways to approach the game.
Watching someone play Call of Duty otoh bores me to death.

@apdenton

Why? Because it is potentially entertaining, depending on the Lets Player.

There was this one Let's Play I watched on Fallout 1 - wasn't from the start just before the Master's conversation to the end.
But I would like to see some of the eariler episodes since the guy character seemed interesting and fun, not to mention I couldn't do it myself because of time/effort and I would get side tracked and just play as myself and not do the RP

It's such a long game though, and a lot of running around that's fun if you're the one doing it, but pretty boring to watch unless the Let's Player has interesting things to say (sadly rarely the case). In other games (particularly shooters) screwing up can be funny, in FNV Let's Plays it just makes me want to go Y U NO PLAY PROPERLY.

A let's play by SSoHPKC...lets see if I can summarise what happens -

"That svcks!"
*30 seconds of looting NPCs*
"That svcks!"
*30 seconds of loading screen*
"That svcks!"
*30 seconds of sorting inventory*

...repeat as required.

TobyGames actually had a pretty good New vegas playthrough going:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmuncxNaLUI&feature=relmfu

But that was before his game got stolen and then he slowly turned into an obnoxious [censored] who gains subscribers by screaming nonstop and acting upbeat constantly....yknow like all the other Youtube partners.
I wish vash did a New vegas playthrough. That dude's hilarious: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3OFmcwPebI
He DOES do FO3 vids from time to time though.

GameplayJenny is also very good. She has a Fallout 3 one going on right now, I've seen most of them. I'd love to see her try Skyrim, rather than New Vegas, though.

I love her dry sense of humour, she is very funny.

I have to agree with statements made that New Vegas isn't the best game to watch. There's too many choices and it can be frustrating to watch a player pick a path you don't want, I don't think there's that much to be made fun of (hence why I call Toby's playthrough interesting. He actually manages to do things out of order enough that weird stuff happens), and New Vegas is more like a book: you read the lore and then it gets you thinking, and if you wanted you could have a philosophical discussion with other players about the ideas New Vegas presents. Problem is you can't have a discussion with a video, and yeah, a lot of the players don't give a DAMN about the game beyond shooting a gun. Hell, even culveyhouse was completely intolerant of Ulysses and unwilling to hear him out. (not saying he has to like him but at least hear him out)

Skyrim walkthrough could be fun, but I dunno if I mean that as a compliment. There's a lot of flaws with NPC interaction that are just asking for a comedian to make fun of them.
