Let's scrap everything and begin again

Post » Fri Jan 22, 2016 1:49 am

Anybody every have the thought that they should just scrap all of their settlements and start again?

I had that thought last night.

I even thought about scrapping the settlements, killing all the settlers and forgetting all about them (okay, except for the Castle and Sanctuary, them I can do something with).

Better yet, just scrap all the settlements and leave the settlers to fend for themselves.

I think my Melinda is getting bitter and cranky since she's constantly having to fail quests and "defend the settlements" because she actually has things to do and can't get to them.

Sheesh

i kind of did that a week or so ago.

except that i scrapped not only my settlements, i also scrapped myself :-)

started a new game, focussing on settlements, in my first game, i didn't manage to get the covenant workshop, that bugged the completist in me :-)

...and in my first game, i used lots of tcl and material spawning for settlements so i could get on with the story,

but i wanted to see what i could acchieve, settlement-wise, without any cheats whatsoever.

i saw, so i'm back to tcl and material spawning :-)

full respect to anybody who does some serious settlement building on a console, i'd go insane without tcl, and without cheating materials in my workshops (specific materials as needed, not tgm), it just gets nothing but tedious, esp wood for me, and the ridiculous 50 wood in a hell inexpensive shipment you'll have to walk miles for to buy won't help to build up ~15 friggin' villages :-)

edit: also thought about scrapping the settlements in my old game btw, the problem with that was just, i'd either have to move settlers other places or leave them undefended and bedless while the places are cleared out

You would think after 200 years of living the wasteland, settlers would know how to protect themselves. Who helped them before I came along? I arm them, build walls, plant food, find water, build shelter, and set up a defense killing field but they still can’t take care of themselves. I say ‘Yes’, scrap the whole damn thing.

I find myself not wanting to deal with settlements but the problem is adhesive. Without settlements its very easy to run out of the stuff, One you get a few settlements all producing purified water, corn, tato and mutufruit then adhesive stops being a bottleneck.

I have been thinking about scrapping the 3 story metal house I created in Sanctuary. It was my 1st attempt at settlement building and I never really liked the results I think I built it when I was around level 12. It has more or less been abandoned since I did not even bother to put beds in it. I will rebuild Sanctuary beginning with a concrete perimeter wall like all my other settlements, but I want to amass around 6k - 8k worth of concrete, metal and wood before I take on that project. I got a long way to go since I have been using those resources to build other settlements. I probably only have 2k or so for each of those resources at this moment in time. I would need to spend around 30k caps to purchase enough resources to get to the 6k worth of each resource which would take 40 game days to make all the necessary purchases since the resources can only be purchased in lots of 50 or 100.

Tenpines Bluff is likely a candidate for a partial rebuild since I started with the junk walls before switching over to concrete walls. So I might replace the junk walls with concrete walls, but that would be after redoing Sanctuary.

they store their ability to care for themselves in their workshops.

it's your own fault if you took that .-)

I looked at it this way: My 1st play through, up to level 50, was learning how to play the game. My 2nd and current play through, is learning how to build and run settlements and collecting all the acheivements. So far I'm at level 63 and will probably go to around level 70 before starting my 3rd play through.

I need inspiration!

I have started new games, but end up building the same cookie-cutter 4-sided houses. multi story or not. wood or metal. it all gets so boring!

I have seen plenty of vids of great player created structures, but can never seem to duplicate. And in the end, they are same 4-sided boxes!

I wish we could do some structures like Morrowind had. totally organic shapes. Built in and around trees, mountains and water features.

And maybe it is just me.

as I look at this post I am writing, it is even boring me in it's structure !

And that is why my new character told Garvey: "No, I am not your savior!" and then walked away from him, never to look back.

I liberated some settlements on my own, and I had maybe 2 defend this settlement quests pop up in 35 levels. It is beautiful and peaceful! :D Now and then, one of my settlers will come up to me and ask me if I can help them. Then I go kill some bandits or ghouls and that's it. Happened maybe 4 times in 35 levels.

Either using the Foundation floor piece (under Wood) that has a concrete base.... or using mods. There's a mod that lets you stack those Foundation pieces on top of each other (which I guess you cannot do in the vanilla game?).... and there's a mod that gives you access to the Covenant concrete barricade walls.

Settlements in their current incarnation feel broken and incomplete. Until the potential is unlocked and the annoyances fixed, my second playtrough will end up having one properly decked out settlement, and it won't be Sanctuary.

I currently hate the settlement defense mechanic, so Hangman's Alley is a leading contender for The One Settlement, because it only haas two approaches, has all kinds of vertical potential, and feels centrally located. Maybe the drive-in. But until they do a ton of upgrading to the entire settlement thing, I'll never help the Minutemen again. It's too much annoyance.

Yeah, in vanilla FO4 I use foundations to build concrete walls. They are found in the wood floor section and it should be the 3rd option to the right where you should see a concrete block with a wood "top" that would be the floor. You cannot automatically stack concrete foundations in vanilla FO4, to increase the height of the concrete wall or fill in gaps between the wall and the ground. To do so you will need attach a wooden staircase against the wall, then you stack another concrete wall / foundation above or below the current wall. After you stack next concrete "block", you can store the staircase in the workbench until you need to use it again.

You can do a search in youtube for "Fallout 4 settlement tips" or something similar for tips and tricks to build settlements.

Go to Finch Farm.

Build steps up to the Highway Overpass.

Put your fast travel tag up there.

Destroy the steps.

Build a 7 story tower with the top floor open on all sides, with just a railing around the perimeter.

Build a roof over it (will need a wall to get it started, but then delete the wall).

You will have a fantastic penthouse in the sky with a 360 degree view. I can see your house from up there.

I really, really have to do that! The Finch's have a nice, little restaurant right now. :) But that penthouse sounds great! I probably can take pot-shots at the Gunners from up there, too! hahaha

I really want to delve into the settlement building, but after hearing all the stories about defending them and useless settlers, turrets, and walls I'll wait until it's fixed.

If you are playing on the PC you can go to Nexus.com (link below) to look for mods that disables settlement attacks or make the message of a settlement under attack stay on the screen until you click it. If you are playing on a console, then you will have to wait for someone to create the mod (when the GECK is released) and it must be approved by Bethesda as well.

I have not found the settlement attacks to be annoying yet. I have not have many attack yet... actually most of the attacks that have happened took place when I was at the settlement itself. There's always a decent chance of at least one legendary enemy to appear. If the attacks start to annoy me, then I will go to the Nexus and download some mods.

Quit that! ;)

Of course, that would be an interesting mod project, wouldn't it? I remember the first time I used the "Start Another Life" mod for Skyrim. It was amazing!

Great ideas. Maybe I'll post some of what I have now for suggestions.

I think I need to start with my ex-Marine Mahalia and rethink this whole settlement thing. I'm so used to putting up those stupid beacons that I'd forgotten that, with patience, settlers do end up showing up at the settlements anyhow, just more slowly.

Hangman's Alley can be converted into an awesome settlement/trading post. I started by scraping everything in it, you're left with that one building on the side. Then I buildt everything up one floor, leaving the ground level for workshops, guards, a general store and carvans to pass through. All my other stores and rec area on the 2nd floor. 3rd floor is for the 8 or 9 settlers living area, and the flat rooftop is a nice patio area with a few turrets placed at each end. You can build over 75% of the alley and go upwards 4 floors.

:D

I couldn't quite snipe the Gunners, but I could snipe some of the Super Mutants over at the Satellite Array. Extreme range, barely do-able.

Here's an idea I'm going to do on my next playthrough. Setup just 2 or 3 beacons at "recruitment centers" you decide, then send the excess settlers where you need them. That way you're less likely to show up at a settlement with 19 settlers, 5 beds, 6 food and 3 water.

I restarted, and have taken a much more planned approach...even so, Preston Gimme has handed over three quests and I only have two settlements, plus my personal fiefdom at Red Rocket. Soon, I'll have more MM quests than settlers.

Protip: If you're going to "scrap" a building, don't use the scrap function, store it instead. Scrapping buildings parts only gives you a fraction of what you put into it.

Concerning settlements and Minutemen: I love the concept but it's flawed in its current state. Aside from questing/role playing the only real benefits to the Minutemen are flares and artillery. Both are pretty lackluster and limited IMO. I feel like I only had one good artillery strike the whole play through (because it is so slow) and Minutemen never showed up to the flares.

On settlements: the fact that you have to be present for your defenses to work is beyond frustrating a what's more the attack notification is very easy to miss.

I'm not fiddling with extensive settlements again until more patches and DLC are released. I'll probably just have a basic adhesive farm and a water farm and connect the two.

As it is now settlements are much of a time drain than a real benefit (outside of adhesives and water farms).
