Let's talk about the Far Harbor.

Post » Fri Feb 19, 2016 3:48 am

I figure since this is the only major story expansion, it deserves its own thread. Some general info from Bethesda.net:

A new case from Valentine’s Detective Agency leads you on a search for a young woman and a secret colony of synths. Travel off the coast of Maine to the mysterious island of Far Harbor, where higher levels of radiation have created a more feral world. Navigate through the growing conflict between the synths, the Children of Atom, and the local townspeople. Will you work towards bringing peace to Far Harbor, and at what cost? Far Harbor features the largest landmass for an add-on that we’ve ever created, filled with new faction quests, settlements, lethal creatures and dungeons. Become more powerful with new, higher-level armor and weapons. The choices are all yours.

Then there's the $25 price tag - all of the story expansions for Fallout 3 and New Vegas were $10-$15, right? Far Harbor is $5 more than what Dragonborn cost for Skyrim, and $5 less than what Shivering Isles cost for Oblivion... I think. At any rate, the price tag and the promise of the "largest landmass we've ever created" gives me the feeling this is going to be a damn proper expansion. They didn't mention any workshop settlements in their description, though - hopefully there still are places on the Far Shore we can build.

And finally, my pet theory: This might be a "sequel" of sorts to Point Lookout. Desmond implied that he and Calvert were only a part of a larger "great game", and his next target was somewhere up north - if you didn't kill him. And the introduction ("go on a search for a young woman") sounds an awful lot like how Point Lookout started. Nadine might not be that young woman, but it would be nice to have her reappear adventuring on the Duchess Gambit. She'd even make a cool companion.

Off the coast of Maine.. Uhh.. Does this mean that Synths can be anywhere within 250 miles of Boston now? I'm a little concernicus.

New factions quests, largest landmass, lethal creatures and "peace" are all keywords that have me pretty excited. Especially if "peace" means the ability to use dialogue to end conflict between the groups instead of mass murder of two factions like the main quest.

I mostly wonder how these Synths got there. Hopefully, they aren't Railroad's victims but instead are Synths who got there by themselves.

Well, they said it was filled with settlements so I expect we can get new places to build.

I'm sure those Synths will not be horrified when I build an Institute research outpost.

Very close to their colony.

Not in slightest afraid.

"At what costs" part suggests otherwise IMO. I don't think you'll need to destroy the others, but you likely will have to do something nasty if yoiu want a lasting peace.

Also, does anyone have a guess in what real-world location the DLC will most likely take place? We know it's somewhere in Maine...

For the price tag....

If it is as large as they are saying, then that may be a fair price.

But really, if you're season passing it, I think it will average out to be much lower.

An island off the coast of Maine, someone in another thread suggested it might be Bar Harbor, which is on Mount Desert Island (according to wikipedia, the largest island off the coast of Maine).

Don't forget inflation so it'll probably have costed the same as Dragonborn

They did mention it was a "colony" which would imply a purposeful effort by a group of synths to settle there, rather than just the synths migrating naturally 250 miles north. Maybe its where the RR sends most of the freed synths or something.

Although I have to wonder what the Children of Atom are doing there though. Seems they've become quite the expansive group in just 10 years.

Does Fallout lore explain why the Children of Atom don't just die from radiation exposure? Maybe as part of the quest line the SS can obtain the ability to thrive under high rad levels...

Synths don't seem to have the same concerns about Radiation as real people (subtle jab). Perhaps they chose to live in "hot spot" and are now in conflict with Atom?

What more is there to say really? Need to see the trailer.

As I mentioned in the DLC thread the issue I see is what happens with the Synth if we've done the MQ? Not done the MQ? If we've joined the BoS? If we've joined the RR? If Nick is with us? If Danse is with us? If Curie is with us? I mean the possibilities just go on and on, but I really hope there are some distinct differences in each case. More than just an extra line of dialog at least.

Mother Isolde will remove your Rads when you talk to her, perhaps her Ministrations protect her flock? Though this does seem counter purpose to the core beliefs...

the announcement said "largest landmass in any DLC".

I did not get all those old expansions for FO3 or Oblivion. how big were their expansions' landmasses?

Some where pretty big. Point Lookout was about 1/5th of the main maps size, FO4 is larger so 1/5th would be great here as well.

That's barely an island. A look on Googleearth shows a bit more warming and sea level rise will make that part of the mainland. Still that could easily be the place, it's big enough.

Had my season pass for a long time.

Sea level rise would do the opposite wouldn't it?

And so many people were so certain it would be Canada, too. :P . I never expected it to be Canada anyway, since the setting of the game is in the U.S. and parody of American culture.

It's cool that we get to see more faction quests though, all the factions are left unfulfilled. I was hoping for them to give the companions a bit of attention though like redirect them back to their origin place and expand on some of their personal quests since I feel was unfinished like with Danse.

I would love if it was an Institute experiment to see how synths would adapt to life without any human interference.

Is synth culture any different from human culture? Are gen 3 synths capable of culture on par to, or even beyond, the scope of humans?

Perhaps Confessor Cromwell will make a return as an all holy prophet who has become more radical and has expanded his church on a grand scale since the events of Fallout 3, and has found some holy ground in this Far Harbor. I also remember Cromwell resisting radiation as well.

I'm actually quite intrigued by the Children of Atom playing a significant role for once.

My first though is also the RR. We do see (even if in a small qty) a presence in DC. So, they definitely have people getting out of the commonwealth. Witch makes sense. Why would they all hang out in the commonwealth? sure way to get captured, that.

Then again. it could be an institute outpost, set to capture any escaped synths that try heading north, isolating themselves from the mainland in order to remain secret.

I actually caught myself singing (internally, I am at work) along with your sig. Wow. I have played a lot of Skyrim!

I hope there is some underwater content along with this new area. Maybe some under water journey or something. I think a P.A. suit with some kind of underwater propulsion would be pretty cool. Probably won't be...

I think by "faction quests" they mean new quests for the new factions. Not the main game factions unfortunately.

I get the feeling that what we can do with the synth colony will reflect the philosophies of the different factions, although there will probably be an ugly-peaceful outcome. If they do let us resolve the storyline peacefully, I want it to be one of the worse outcomes honestly.

I just hope we can take our companions to the Far Harbor with us, and take any DLC companions back to the Commonwealth. You couldn't in Fallout 3 or New Vegas, but they did it in Dragonborn so I think it'll be possible.
