Let's talk about this, short and sweet.

Post » Wed Feb 12, 2014 7:09 am

Played the whole weekend of the beta, loved it. But there's basically 2 things that are keeping me away of buying and playing it.

It's an MMO. Yes, I said it. The game is ruined for me since it's an MMO.

Not that it's just an MMO, but that it didn't feel like an MMO. There was no real reward for playing with other people, the "dungeons" were extremely dull and just messy because the nonexistent agro except for my taunt. The game was much more fun when you started playing it like a single-player game, exploring and doing quests just on your own.

It's pretty much so that MMO and Elder Scrolls don't fit together, in Elder Scrolls immersion and some minor RP possibly have been what made the games so excellent, in ESO it's just like a single-player except that there are just random people jumping around and breaking any immersion you could have. (And the chat, oh my god. The amount of whining, foreign language, bad grammar and trolling/flaming forced me to close the chat, leaving the "chatty part" of an MMO hidden as well)

I hope that Bethesda is already working on the 6th single-player Elder Scrolls game, there is no Elder Scrolls experience here for the true fans, and is going to be a bummer for many, not all, but many Elder Scrolls fans.

The lack of open beta is weird as well, I'm lucky I got to the weekend beta as I would've never have paid 60 euros just to see if the game is good. Since the reviewers had it all wrong as they played the game for pretty much an hour which is way too little for this game, can't be trusted to give a give a good review.

Edit: This didn't turn out as "short and sweet" as I expected

Well then this isn't the game for you. You can go back to playing other ES games if you want, there's plenty of those.

The game isn't ment to feel like an MMO.

Its ment to feel like just another installment in the Elder Scrolls series which happens to be online.

I don't understand why you say "there is no Elder Scrolls experience here for the true fans", I find it bloody awesome to be exploring through Tamrial 2500 year ago and seeing all the ingame lore and references to the other games. Like seeing that lying khajit bastard sitting by a lake. (NDA keeping it descrete)

I already am :)

Indeed, it doesn't feel like an ES game, but neither does it feel like an MMO.

As I said before.

Of course bethesda is working on tes6, zenimax will milk the cow dry with sub/cash shop, proceed to go f2p, and at this point it matters little if the game holds or not.

They announce tes 6 development, create hype, some more people return to ESO, some more cash milked away.

Then tes 6 released, boom explosion of buyers. Why? Those who say ESO svcks, are the ones that say single players ES games are the good stuff, instant profit. And those who like ESO will go for ES anyway, so they can only win.

MONEY MONEY MONEY all that matters until people learn to stop opening their as---wallets to every bone.

What? No, that's not correct either.

ESO is its own game. It IS indubitably an MMO, and it is meant to feel like one... bearing in mind that the category MMO covers a very wide variety of different games. And it takes place in the TES universe and takes a lot of inspiration from those games' mechanics, but it has a lot of novel mechanics which are NEITHER carbon copies of any other MMO nor taken from the SP games. It has to be evaluated in its own right.

People should be evaluating it on its own merits. If it's fun, play. If not, don't.

But the thread will be closed, because the OP violates the NDA

Was short but surely not sweet ;)

I don't actually understand this, you don't like mmos but you know this is an mmo game, but you try it anyway then you say it's bad it does not feel like an mmo. confused I am.

It's zenimax a branch in bethesda that does this, it is not the same developers as on the singleplayer games.

You said you enjoyed it when you played it as a singleplayer game, then maybe that is how you should play this game and see the mmo instances as bonus, could be fun to see someone else run around for a change. just a way to look at it as I found the exploring to be almost the best in the game.

What so all the khajiits sound the same? this is more the nprobably NDA related talk, so I wont write.

Confused you should not be.

I was pointing that other players ruin this game, not MMO's overall. This is not a title that fits many players IMO

my 2 cents:

Low level content is usually a bit lack luster in all games. When it isn't, the end game usually svcks - as a byproduct. This game actually has some truly immersive stuff going on for it. If you happen to be one of the few that didn't choose ebonheart, you will see that the differences in beginning content is substantial (though i didn't play aldmeri tbh). I enjoyed the daggerfal cov. more than I did the ebonheart (and I rather favor the morrowind/skyrim setting/lore)

As far as the single player aspect goes: every single MMO is usually played like a single player until you hit max, or you want to run pvp. Dungeons are another exception but is more reliant on friends rather than pugs - to have a good time.

Overall I agree and disagree with your statement about it feeling like an MMO. I think mostly, it is it's own thing. There may be some elements similiar to other MMO's, but as far rewards go, I mean, you surely didn't expect to get all that many shinies from this low level content? Or even expect the loot system to be the same?

The drop rate and item availability in this game is on the low side - which I think is much better. It makes items really worth something rather than welfare common X pieces that usually get pitched to the vendor.

If you actually enjoyed the game, even single player, then what are you going to be out vs other games (that will probably cost more in, lets say a two month period)? If you get at least 100 hrs out of this game during a month or so, it would be worth it, imo.

Come on now, be constructive.

I think it's a fair point to say that a game can never be truly immersive when some random stranger is bunny-hopping in front of you, but there was that moment when I was getting my behind kicked and said random stranger jumped in and saved my life that makes it all worthwhile.

It doesn't.

I gave up on trying to treat it as a TES game or struggling with the fact that I don't like MMOs. It is what it is. It's still not what I wanted, but despite this fact I enjoyed the beta weekend; I wasn't convinced at first, but the longer I played it, the more fun I had. The starting zones were kinda restrictive, which helps me understand why many reviews were so negative. But I see some potential here. I don't know if ZOS can build up on these foundations and how much will be improved before April, but what I saw was enough to make me want to try it out. I'm not sure how long it will keep me interested, especially since I primarily play single player games and I don't know if I can get used to other people everywhere, but well, it doesn't really matter. When I no longer enjoy it, I'll just stop and go play something else.

I'm sad to hear about your experiences with chat. Mine were very different, I even had some fun moments in the short time I spent in the game. People starting to talk to me in rhyme after I expressed interest in their music playing? I'll take more, please.

I noticed this as well. The game felt schizophrenic, not quite MMO but not quite TES either and it feels like the game isn't sure where to land, it's sort of floating in the middle between the two. It doesn't blend well either because if it did it wouldn't feel so divided. I think it has something to do with the way it tries to encourage you to single-player, but the game is designed as if it was a multiplayer game. It's hard to describe exactly what I mean but the best way to put it is that it feels like a sumo match between TES and MMO.

Eso is a single player game for the first 12 lvl, thats where you learn how the game works, after that the dungeon and bossmonster come into play where you need other players.

95% of the people talking about the game being restrictive, and whatnot, simply never even got to level 10+ or did the pvp in the beta. which is what most reviews are about anyway.

I'm telling you now, we need past level 10 reviews if you want the true feel.

The initial stages of the game will feel, for those who played skyrim, a extened helgen, albeit a bit more explorable, but once the 2 tutorial zones are done, the game does open up, world bosses, exploration, etc.

Please wait for reviews about those parts, which will be, by far what all the game is about. Initial zones are for players used to mmo, and also help you introduce to SOME of the ESO features, such as exploration rewarding.

I'm not sure about the idea of going through a zone as big as Vvardenfell (for several hours) before the game really starts to take off. I see that as a flaw more than something to look forward to. The game should open up after the initial tutorial area, not after hours of play.

That just means he wants to play with you!

I am a jumper, too, but even in the single-player games. And I think I RP more than most (character has been awake for a day and a half, needs to find somewhere to pass out for the evening).

Heck if you are talking about this weekend, it could have very well been me :D

Lvl 26 here and to me the game felt massive, the crafting was like a cancer i just couldn't get it out of my system and being able to upgrade EVERYTHING i looted was incredible from someone that has been playing mmos for 12 yrs and i have never seen anything like it. Even though i did go everywhere we could and check every nook and cranny and even went back to the starter area to craft free armor i never felt enclosed and it seemed that i was always finding sky shards somewhere, the pvp area really suprised me, i expected to run into a zone with nothing but pvp but man was i wrong, there is so much more to do out there then just pvp and no matter the lvl it is viable for you to do it. Ill be honest it does need some work in some areas but they are minor to me, nothing that breaks the bank anyway. So yes i am happy with it.
