Let's talk a little about key bindings

Post » Sat Sep 17, 2011 6:27 pm

So, you got your hands on the game, you have created your beatiful character, you're ready to start your great adventure and after a while you realize you are not in full control of your hero. So you open up the control settings screen and just stare at it, wondering what's the best way to control your character because of the new dual-wielding system. Let's speed up things, shall we? I've been thinking a bit and this is what I came up with [yes, you'd need a 5 mouse button for this]:

Equip/Unequip right hand weapon R [left index finger]Equip/Unequip left hand weapon F [left index finger]Equip/Unequip right hand spell X [left index finger]Equip/Unequip left hand spell Z [left ring finger]Right hand attack Left mouse button [right index finger]Left hand attack Secondary left mouse button	[right thumb]Cast right hand spell Left mouse button [right index finger]Cast left hand spell Secondary left mouse button	[right thumb]Combine spells Middle mouse button [right index finger]Cast combined spell Left mouse button [right index finger]Parry Right mouse button [right middle finger]Grab Secondary right mouse button	[right ring finger]Forward W [left middle finger]Back S [left middle finger]Slide left A [left ring finger]Slide right D [left index finger]Use E [left index finger]Auto Move Q [left ring finger]Run Left Shift [left little finger]Toggle always run Caps Lock [left little finger]Sneak Left Ctrl [left little finger]Hold breath Left Alt [left thumb]Jump Spacebar [left thumb]Change view V [left index finger]

I'm taking for granted that the PC version will allow keys to be bound to more than one function according to what we'd equip in our hands. I'm open to suggestions and further improvements.

I guess the weird thing is that all games in the series are right-hand attack = left mouse, and left-handed shield block = right mouse. I always bind casting spells to the mouse thumb button.

I don't know if I want to switch those for Skyrim and get used to playing differently.

I think it would feel strange at first spamming the right-click for primary attack, but I guess you'd get used to it.

That's why I'm going to use left mouse for right hand attack, right mouse for block and secondary left mouse for left hand attack. That way I won't have to change the layout I got used to over the years, and having the left hand on the mouse thumb feels just right to me since the button is to the left of the right hand button.

I just hope they've been gracious enough to break out the options like you've listed.

I would hate to see:
Whatever is in your left hand = keybind
Whatever is in your right hand = keybind

5 button mouse? Do you have an example of one of those? Mine has way too many buttons. :P And I've never seen a two handed mouse. Or do you somehow hold it in a weird way that you can use your "little," "index," "ring," "middle," and "thumb" from each hand (left & right)? Sorry, confused by your post.

I use a wireless NumPad and mouse, so it would have to be something like this for me:

I don't think that equipping spells and weapons will be separated. They learned their lesson from Morrowind. Should be all hotkey based, and a single raise/lower armaments should be available. Likewise with casting them. It's one trigger (mouse button) for one hand, so holding them combines spells. There's no 'intiate spell combination' button.

I'm assuming by 'parry' you mean block. There won't be any specific 'parry' move, as far as I'm aware.

Hold breath is a perk that I think goes automatically.

Equip/Unequip right hand weapon * Hold breath don't know what this refers to

Perhaps it is used for the hyperventilating thing that kids used to do in junior high school where you breathe a bunch of times really fast, exhale all the way and then hold your breath until you pass out. ;)
Or perhaps to scare people by making your face turn blue.

Huh? I've never seen a two handed mouse either, not sure what you mean. Here's mine http://media.tecca.com/2010/08/17/microsoft-comfort-mouse-4500-black-angleimage-320w.jpg

I always have trouble reaching the left Ctrl bottom (sort of uncomfortable) so I usually just set it up to one of my side buttons on my mouse.

It looks like you can hold breath while sneaking with the bow raised, it's still quite unclear to me what's for though.

Ah, ok! Cool about the mouse. The thing I was confused about what your mouse binding descriptions... like you say left index finger, left ring finger, etc., then right index finger, right ring finger, etc.

Yeah, I went and looked it up. :) I like my usage for the perk, but evidently it's for steadying your aim? I don't think I know any archer who needs to hold their breath for more than a second or two though.

E.g. you use the right index finger for the left mouse button, that's it. Unless you're left-handed :P

ah ok didn't know that hold breath thing is actually a perk

Cool. I've seen those, just not a 5 button mouse. I have this one: http://www.logitech.com/assets/31255/4/wireless-gaming-mouse-g700.png which has too many frickin' buttons. I only use some of the thumb buttons for increasing/decreasing mouse sensitivity right now. I guess it has like 12 or 13 buttons?

Yeah, after seeing a picture of the mouse, I guess I understand it better.

My mouse has 3 buttons. You shouldn't be thinking everyone has super-awesome gaming-mouses just because you do.

I plan on using the thumb button on my Nostromo and right-click for left hand, and left-click the right hand. The allows me to make the visual queue of MY left hand does what is in my character's left hand, and MY right hand does my character's right hand. The right-click for left hand is mostly for dual wielding and shields. I can't imagine to much of an issue when dual wielding switch buttons/hands, as it just melee.

It's around 15 bucks and nowhere near a super awesome gaming mouse.

I would say most mice these days have at least 5: left, right, middle wheel click, thumb up/down/forward/back.

I've enver seen a wireless numpad, but now I want one. Not just for this game. Does it have more than just the typical setup?

Num / * -7 8 9 +4 5 6 +1 2 3 Enter0-----0 Del Enter

Just use a gamepad or an Xbox360 controller and that'll solve your problem.
