Let's Talk

Talking to NPC's in TES is always a bit disappointing. This seems to have gotten worse overtime with the only options being, Rumors, asking about the town, and maybe "Bed" at an Inn. Why is this? I would think that Bethesda would focus on dialogue and dialogue options just as much as anything else, but it always seems lackluster. Maybe it's a symptom of too much focus on voice acting. What do you think would be a good medium between voice acting and dialogue options? Should there be more? I'd like to hear an NPC's lifestory through various dialogue choices and charisma etc., but in the end all you get to talk about, really, is "Rumors".

I've heard a lot of people say fully voiced dialogue is one of the worst things to happen to RPGs, and I agree with them completely.

Far less content, far less options, far less left to the player's imagination, and far less mod friendly... all for what? A slight boost in immersion that gets undermined anyway by re-used voice actors and NPCs spouting the same sentences over and over again.

I say go back to the Morrowind approach. Written dialogue for the most part, with voice acting for greetings and small portions of ambient dialogue when walking through the world for immersion.

Even the immersion argument is debatable. I find reading to be more engaging than voiced dialogue personally. This is because it makes that aspect of it feel more like a book.
