Lets bake a spell!

Post » Sat Jul 03, 2010 8:47 pm

Im curious to see how Bethesda will handle the spells. I see spells in the Skyrim trailer and I know you can duel cast spells but how will you make them (if you can). The spell making in Oblivion wasn't too bad, though to me it was a bit restrictive. Iv'e never had any love for Morrowind and its graphics. I played a little it but the graphics I couldn't handle. Back to spells! (gatta hurry, bel just rang!) I'm wondering if we can mash together different spells!

Spellmaking is currently out but being worked on. Beth doesn't want it to have a "spreadsheety" feel to it. Combining different spells is also something they're working on but haven't gotten to work properly just yet.

Personally, I would prefer spell making to be left out in favour for a ready made, and diverse, collection of spells. Spell combinations would be cool if Beth can get the mechanics just right.

Fixed. :hehe:

This. Besides, I play my characters without custom spells. They tend to be overpowered and way too cheap to get.

We can mash together spells to some degree - In the gameplay trailer, you see a mage stomping the ground, creating a fireblast that shoots out in all directions. It's been confirmed that this is done with fire in one hand and shockwave in the other.

Where was this confirmed? Also, is 'shockwave' this game's implementation of telekinesis, as I was hoping for something along those lines.

Confirmed? If that is so, then I have missed it completely.

But all spells cannot be combined yet and that is what they are working on.

I strongly disagree. I don't like the idea of everything being premade in a TES game.

I'm pretty sure that was not a spell combo in the tailer, but rather a dragonshout. There is even lore in the UESPwiki stating that some Thu'um spells knock enemies down.

(The fact that spell combining is still only an idea they are tinkering with and might not implement only makes it less likely it would be in the trailer.)

They are also trying to get rid of spamming spells to increase your skill level. Spell making was easily used to make spells that could have a small duration/magic cost to spam over and over. I'm sure this aspect of spell making is something they'd want to avoid, and may be one of the factors in it's possible removal.

I'd love for spell making to be in. In Oblivion they almost got it right. If only i can make spells to make people's things disappear

If they can't get it right by release time though, might as well save it for the next one.

I might be wrong about it specifically being a dragonshout, but it most definitely wouldnt be a combo spell if there is a chance that might not be ingame, since the trailer is supposedly gameplay realistic.

Edit: Although one thing I just thought about is that Todd might be half-lying when he says they are only thinking about implementing certain things (for all we know they are going to be ingame, but they want to keep us wondering)

Spells of the same type can be combined for a stronger version, see the AOE double-handed fireblast. Some spells of different types cannot be combined yet like frost and fire.

Why do we definately need spell making exactly? I can understand it being there if they come up with a good system that actually adds something to the game, but including it just for the sake of it strikes me as being just a little bit silly. I would rather see a much more in depth magic system in general, with a wider range of spells, as opposed to the hastily thrown together DIY approach of Oblivion.

But maybe that's just me *shrug*

Customization, and almost endless possobilities, thats why we need it. Dont like it, dont use it.

If they could do it without breaking the magic system i'm all for it. Unfortunately, I don't think they can.

I think they are going to end up with a very nice magic system. I think Todd even stated that they will scrap spell making (along with other things like horses and werewolves), if it doesnt meet their expectations and actually add something to the gaming experience. So I'm not really worried about if the quality of the system will be good or not, I'm just going to have to wait and see what did and didnt make the cut.

empty illusion is empty.

Having 'endless possibilities' looks nice on paper, but in practise I'd prefer a range of decent spells shipping with the game. If spell making is in, then great! I'll use it if it's actually worth using, or simply ignore it if it is as shallow, and pointless, as Oblivion's system. Either way is fine with me
