So, I've been wondering how terrible internet here really is. My family, where I'm staying for the holidays, has a broadband connection. Supposedly high speed internet. Browsing web pages is ok, but I started downloading TES: Oblivion, and I think I hit a peak rate of about 190 KB/S.
Our internet plus a landline connection costs us about $40USD monthly, and we get five gig of broadband internet. After this we're supposedly on Dial-up, but that just means our internet literally doesn't work.
What sort of connection is everyone else on?

At home I was getting a steady 40KB/s. Yes you read that right.

On base I'm getting like 2MB/s on a good day.

I'm not very tech savvy, so here's all that I know how to say. According to this green icon on my taskbar, my speed is 54.0 Mbps. Is that good, bad, or just okay?

That means very little. It's not your ISP speed, it's the speed that your router/modem/whatever is delivering data to your computer at. Your ISP is probably giving you something closer to 500KB/s-1MB/s to take a wild guess.

All it means is that your router is able to deliver data to your computer without being a bottleneck.

Maybe. I actually have no idea.

I get about 150 kB/s. It's trough a modem that connects to a 3G cellphone network, 20€ a month, no download limit.

Verizon Fios not sure which plan but it's fast. If I remember correctly, when I tried the speed test thing, I can get ~25 mbps for downloading and 14 mbps for uploading.

Link speed currently 24 mbps according to my task manager. d-loads usually avg 300 kbs.

Mine's fairly poor, being on satellite internet and all (yeah, yeah, it's the only option in my neck-of-the-woods). I couldn't tell you the actual speed, as I don't really know, but it's not good. That much is for sure.

From midnight to about 5pm I get about 12mbps down and 2.5mbps upstream. From 5PM to just before midnight it usually drops to 5mbps down and 2mbps up. Still fine with me though. I have a 15ms ping to my DNS server (4.2.2.1) But I live on top of a mountain, so its good speeds for up here. Apparently unlimited bandwidth per month as well, since they have never mentioned anything about it, and I download about 3GBs of podcasts per day, streaming of HD movies over Netflix atleast 4 times a week. The price is slightly high though, $65/month.

Home network sitting at about 270mbps, my media server loves that.

In reality, it depends on how hot it is, how generous God feels and if it's my router's time of the month. Sometimes I get speeds of up to 1.2mb/s, most of the time I'm stuck on about 50-150kbs (particularly when downloading off Steam)

Yeah. I suppose that's from the traveling back and forth between satellites and the like. Anyway, it makes online gaming impossible. I get better performance when using my phone as a wifi card, sadly.

We FINALLY moved to a 40GB a month plan and it is heaven compared to before where we would run out of Data on the 10th of every month and be stuck for 20 days on a <10kb/s connection. We don't go over 40GB so we're getting max speeds 24/7 now. Not really sure what my ISP theoretical speed is but real speeds generally are about ~9-10Mb/s.

holy [censored] scratch that. Just went to speedtest.net and got 15.63Mb/s.

Hehe, I'm on Slingshots unlimited plan, I only get around 5mbps, but I can still pull over 300GB in a month.

Fine then, 150 kilobytes a second or whatnot is the download speed if thats what you mean. Either way, much slower than what I should get with ADSL2

But it only costs $14.99 a month. If I downloaded huge amounts of files or music it might bug me, but its fine for general browsing. The telephone wires in my neighborhood don't support anything faster and I have no intention of handing Comcast any more money for cable internet.
